Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)
Can you have emoji running on 2.2.1?
Yes.
If you're jailbroken, there's a download on cydia to enable them.
If not, the only way is to download Touch Dial Emoji in the app store.

I think its just jargon because you need an emoji capable phone to decipher the code that depicts the emoji.

Something interesting happened to me with the Cydia app. I downloaded it on 2.2 and it was working great. When I upgraded to 2.2.1 I did a restore, re-JB etc. the emoji was still available on my phone without re-downloading it from Cydia.

That's because you restored the Plist hack saved through the backup.

Probably will not show up properly unless a Japanese phone. Worth a test try though.

So I have emoji. But any text I send with them they don't show up - yeah, yeah, they need to be an iPhone 2.2, right? But when I say don't show up, I mean the text message in its entirety is not received. Even to an iPhone with 2.2.
So how is this carrier related? Does the sending carrier have to be compatible, or the receiving one? Does the receiver have to have the emoji enabled also? This is for SMS.
For the record I am on T-mobile, and when I send them to myself, I get them fine.

Must be a T-mobile thing. Emoji has worked flawlessly on all text I have sent to AT&T serviced iPhones running 2.2+ This includes non JB phone who do not have the feature enabled via the app store hack or plist through iTunes.

There must be something to it, and you may be right. I can get one person in another country with a Vodafone account (but not another on a vodafone account in another country) to get emoji.

Yeah, for some reason T-Mobile blocks texts with emoji in them.
