going from JB 2.2 to non JB 2.2.1

Ive decided that I dont use the jailbreak as much as i thought I would so I want to upgrade to 2.2.1 and just have a plain ole iphone

what are the steps I do to go about this, im still a newbie with these.

just plug the iPhone in and choose restore
iTunes will handle it

keep in mind that if you ever want to have the chance to unlock, do NOT upgrade
but it sounds like you don't
so you'll be ok

WRONG!!! you dont need to restore just click update so you dont lose all your stuff

Google it next time and you won't have to wait for someone to tell you. 😉

And "virgin" in this case just means stock. You can just use itunes for that.

Wrong on your part! 🙂

All Apple firmware updates completely wipes the device to update. The 2.2.1 update has been confirmed at ~ 260MB, which is a complete build, not just a simple update.

Wrong on YOUR part. An Apple update may re-write the entire OS but, it doesn't touch the "mobile" folder so you don't lose your music, videos and settings.

Restore=erase iPhone and install 2.2.1
Update=archive and install (keeping user prefs and music)
 
As a general rule of thumb it is best to restore and setup as new rather then restore from backup. It is possible for jailbroken files to be restored without someone knowing. I have seen it personally.

The only jailbroken files it can restore from a backup are files in the user's folder, such as preferences. If you wanna be clear, you must un-install various preference-hacks before restoring. The kind of hacks I'm talking about are: Emoji or Battery Percentage... These are simple plist edits in the mobile/Library/Preferences folder which DO get backed up.

Ok, fair enough, I stand slightly corrected. 🙂 If however you want to go to unjailbroken from jailbroken, I'd advise not just updating but restoring, which will wipe everything out. 🙂
