Apple has issued software updates for the applications that come with iWork '08. These include Numbers (http://support.apple.com/downloads/Numbers_Update), Pages (http://support.apple.com/downloads/Pages_Update), and Keynote (http://support.apple.com/downloads/Keynote_Update).

The updates simply address "compatibility issues".

I wouldn't exactly call that a "compatibility" update. Now instead of getting a message that an iWork '09 file is corrupted, you see:

So basically they updated iWork 08 to make it non-backwards compatible???

It already wasn't backward compatible, but before it just said the file was corrupted, instead of made on a newer version of keynote.

You mean forwards compatible. iWork probably does a good job with earlier version of iWork files.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

I have recently installed iWork 09 and didn't think I had the aforementioned software installed anymore, but Software Update still wanted to download and install these updates.

I checked carefully, and Apple left iWork 08 behind even after upgrading...

Nice, but confusing!

Does anyone have a direct download link?

Simply use the Software Update option off the :apple: menu.

Thats truly poor show from Apple. At least Microsoft Office has a compatibility download to enable older versions of Office view the newer Office file format's. Seem's reasonably similar to me.

It took ~90MB of updates for this message?

Does anyone think we'll see something come along that will make 08 play well with 09?

I updated using a friends CD and all is well. We shared a family pack

iWork 08 was replaced entirely during the update

So by definition, (for Apple's sake [Revenue Protection]) I take it you mean a Family Friend.

That is to be expected "09" in NOT and upgrade to 08. it is a new suit of software. I typically leave the old version on the disk for a while untill I know the new version is going to work well.

You don't need a special utility for that, just save your file as an 08 version from the 09 suite. I think 08 did the same for earlier versions. I've tried the iWork beta too, and when you share, you can choose to make available 08, 09 and PDF versions of the file.

I suppose you still can't directly open an 09 file in 08 without help from the author then, unlike the MS solution. Maybe they want us to pay for iWork.com...
