I wish there was a jailbreak that...

Just gives us access to the iPhone file system without installing command-line tools, Cydia and Installer. I just wanna have a stock iPhone with the ability to browse the file system. However, you cannot install SSH without Cydia, so I'm stuck in a rut.
 
If you have a PC, there's iPhonebrowser and DiskAid. I'm surprised nobody has written a Mac version of these. Oh, wait a moment, maybe there *is* a Mac version of DiskAid? Google it and check. DiskAid doesn't really advertise that it can browse the file system of a jailbroken iPhone, but it does, at least on a PC.

What's wrong with the Command Line tools? If you don't use them, you won't see them. Also, discard Installer, don't even install it with you use Pwnage Tool. Cydia will let you download Netatalk so that you can browse the file system. 🙂

There is diskaid but, you need to jailbreak in order to see the entire file system. Also, you can't set permissions and it's really flaky. SSH is really the best way to go... USB is troublesome.

Well, Apple didn't want us to see the file system, so jailbreaking is the only way to go. I thought you just didn't want to have cydia and installer on your iPhone.

And while not being able to set permissions is a pain, it's great to be able to browse the file system like a regular disk, instead of being stuck navigating it through the command system.
 
Is there an app for the iphone itself to allow me to view the file system and delete/rename/etc. from the iphone itself?

I know the act of jailbreaking doesn't cause problems, but I'd rather not have Cydia installed, but I would like SSH. I remember one of the original jailbreaks (1.1.1) installed SSH upon jailbreaking. I wish pwnageTool did this. I checked, and you cannot install SSH without first installing Cydia. In PwnageTool, I can download the SSH package prior to installation, but it doesn't do jack unless I select Cydia as well. I figured it might install SSH and skip Cydia but, it does not.
 
i don't ssh at all but couldn't you install cydia with NO INSTALLER then ssh and delete ALL cydia files off the phone?...would that work?

Why not just remove Cydia after you are done installing SSH?
 
There is an app that lets you view the file system. I installed it thinking it was something else. I removed it.

I tried that. How am I supposed to know that just by deleting Cydia.app, all the OTHER files it installs in various places on the system are gone? I just want a jailbreak that installs ONLY OpenSSH.

I guess what I don't understand is why you don't want the other files. I mean, OpenSSH depends on some of those, you know.

What did the bsd subsystem do to you? Take up a minimal amount of disk space?

Can't you just:
1. Create custom firmware in PwnageTool, unselect Cydia and Installer.
2. Then go to Cydia Packages in Pwnage, and Download Packages tab.
3. Click Refresh, then download OpenSSH and OpenSSL (required for OpenSSH).
4. Go back to Select packages tab and choose the two packages.
5. Pwn your device.

Not sure if that will work, but it might. I think the main problem you might encounter doing it this way is some packages that OpenSSH relies on that I don't know, and thus didn't mention here.

Something just occured to me... If you do manage to install just OpenSSH without any of the other jailbroken system utilities like SBSettings or Boss Prefs, how do you toggle OpenSSH on and off?

I tried that. I couldn't log into my iPhone after and then I couldn't figure out how to install Cydia without SSH.

Why would I need to disable it? I keep it on all the time. It doesn't drain the battery like the old SSH.
