3g iPod, bought at the SoHo Apple Store in NYC. Going on 5 years old now and still works great! I only need my iPod to play music in my car or at the gym, so it still meets all my needs - no plans to replace it until it dies!

My first was 5gb gen 1 ipod that came in all the colors you wanted as long as you wanted white and people would ask, 'what is that?' Sold it to get Gen 2. At one point I was stopped by airport security who wanted to know why I traveled with 3 ipods. Hey, one for video, a shuffle for walking, and a nano because it was cool. why not?

First generation 10GB. When I read about the iPod when it was released, I dubbed it the "answer to all my problems" (i.e., an old, decaying collection of mix tapes - and I do mean "tapes"). It was everything I could have hoped for. The fact that I had to switch from PC to Apple to use one turned out to be an incedental, but fabulous, side benefit.

I actually got a rebate from Apple when I bought it - it's been a long time since Apple had to give rebates to move iPods. Of course, I think it cost $600.

Feb 4, 2009, 05:21 PM
My first was a 4gb 1st Gen Green iPod Mini with a battery that died out in nine months. My second was another green mini, third was a 30gb 5g video, fourth was a 16gb 1st gen Touch (now my dad's), and fifth (current) is a 32gb Touch! As for other family members, collectively we have 3 iPod 5g 30gbs, 3 iPod minis (all 4gb-two green, one silver), 2 iPod nanos (one 1g 1gb black, one 3g 8gb pink), 2 shuffles (both 1g 512mb), and 2 iPod touches (one first gen 16gb (still kicking and almost 1.5 years old!) and one 32gb 2nd gen) My iTunes library grew from an original 300mb (on a 20gb Dell Optiplex) with the first mini to 110gb now (on a MyBook external drive attached to a 20" iMac). As you can see, the iPod got me hooked on Apple products. We now have an all-Apple network (two Airport Extremes, one Express-all N) with two macs, and two (work-provided) PCs.

I still think it's the best looking one with the backlit red buttons, but the screen makes it look like something from the 1980s campared to the latest. Although that does give it a certain charm now.

Still my favourite looking iPod. I was annoyed when the video came in black, since up to that point the only black iPods were the fairly rare U2 editions! :D I bought mine as an ex-display model for a big savings, otherwise I never would have shelled out the extra for the U2 one... but it sure did look good. :)

Harddrive died on it, sadly. I've still got it somewhere... might install a new HDD and turn it into a portable FireWire drive sometime. :D

Mine was the original shuffle 512 MB, what was yours?

Ipod nano 2nd gen 8g - silver

I was always a mac head and was interested in the ipod, but it seemed like everyone had one and more than half of them did not even know anything about Apple. Some who I spoke with did not even know that apple made computers at the time. I guess one thing I liked about Apple was kind of the small underground family feeling, kind of like you knew a little secret that the majority of the PC world didn't really know or understand. The ipod created this small gateway to the imac which led to the Mac Book popularity and now our little underground family is not that underground anymore. I am starting to get used to the larger family, but I just hope the care and details that have long gone into the Apple brand continues to lead the way fearlessly. You gotta love :apple:

I miss my ipod photo. a couple years ago, after five of them bricked, i got pissy and decided that apple was going to send me a video ipod to replace it. and it took some time, and i was polite and persistent, but they agreed to send me a video ipod. That was over two years ago (I think!) and it is still working. but i don't like it as much as the ipod photo. i hate how the top of the video ipod isn't rounded.

I bought a 20gb monochrome screen when the click wheel first came out but i returned it within a day (didn't like) so that doesn't count. SO, my first iPod I kept was a 4gb mini that was green I think.

From there went to a chewing gum stick Shuffle 512mb and I used the heck out of that thing!-->2gb white nano-->a black classic - maybe 80GB?-->iPhone 3g and I also have a 8gb nano chromatic for working out. the 8gb nano is by far my favorite of them all. The screen looks amazing on it.

Mine was the first gen white Nano (1GB I think), which I bought a week before the second gen came out  so in about 5 months I upgraded to the (RED) one. I loved that thing much more than anything. Unfortunately, last summer (2008) I took it on our boat (we have this 7 meter inflatable with a steering wheel), there was a huuuuuge wave and it managed to splash my iPod which I had in a pocket in my swim pants (which supposedly should even keep money dry.. ahh marketing ) I tried everything I could from online posts to make it alive again but nothing worked. Unfortunately I didn't like the third gen Nanos (even though the ability to play videos almost made me buy it), so my mom gave me the white one I gave her as she didn't use it much anyway. Once the fourth gens came out, I immediately fell in love! It had the design of my second gen I loved together with video playback, I knew I had to buy it :p Since then I am so much in love with it, that I don't even bother using my iPhone for music (only when my iPod battery dies).
I guess when I started writing that I would just share my whole life with the iPod. I really hope Apple will not discontinue the Nanos sometime, because I cannot imagine having a different iPod. If they would by any chance do that, I will buy a couple off of eBay just in case for the future :p

I bought a first gen iPod mini in silver, 4gb. That was one durable ipod - though towards the end the battery wasn't going longer than 15 minutes and I recycled it for a 4G nano. The iPod was one the main reasons I switched to the Mac. At the time using on iPod in Windows wasn't that smooth. No iTunes. Needed to use something like MusicMatch. When I saw how seemless iTunes and the iPod on a Mac, went out and bought a PowerMac G4

My first mp3 player was a 256MB RCA Lyra.
I then upgraded to a SanDisk Sansa E-260 or something like that. I attempted to use it for a week or so. But adding playlists was nearly impossible.

So, I started looking into the Creative Zen and the iPod Video 5.5G.
In the end, I bought my first iPod--the iPod Video 5.5 (30 GB). I have never looked back. I love the way syncing with iTunes works.

Anyways, after getting my iPod, and seeing how easy it was to work, I began to look into getting a Mac. When Leopord came out, I bought my first Mac (MacBook). I love it. Now, I am addicted to buying apple products

I purchased an iPod Touch 2G on release day, and recently an iPod Shuffle.

Me, too, exactly the same. Early 2006. The first two I had died within a few months, in warranty - and were replaced without a murmur, which is one of the reasons I switched to Mac. The third 30 GB is still running well, though showing its age a little.

Original 5GB wheel iPod which still runs.

I also have a copy of literally every single generation of iPod, mini, nano, shuffle and Touch since and all are still in working order. I think I may need to photograph them all together at some point!

My first and only iPod is the 4th generation nano. Soooo thin! Love it! I got the silver one becuase its the first one that really caught my attention, when Steve Jobs did a demo on it. I made a trend at my school, one of my other friends got the blue one, another got the orange one, another got the black one, and another got the blue one. :D

Was there from the beginning: a 1st Generation with Jimi Hendrix on the box :D

I remember getting stopped by a guard on the London Underground who asked to see my iPod as they were so rare in the UK then. He was gutted as he'd just bought a Creative Nomad Jukebox.

i had it up until the release of the iPod touch 2G. the hard drive on my old iPod died literally on the day of the release.
so the 32GB iPod touch was a nice upgrade. :)

First Gen Mini, Green, found it in stock a week after they came out at a Comp USA. I sold it about 6 months later after I scratched it, sent it to Japan and made a pretty penny.

a 1GB 1st Gen Nano (white)

Then I got a 4GB 2nd Gen Nano (pink)

Then I got a 30Gb 5.5Gen Video

Then I got an 8GB 1st Gen Touch

Now I have a 16GB iPhone 3G

My girlfriend's first was;

a 3rd Gen iPod (30GB)

She's also got an 80GB Classic in black.

She's not the gadget whore I am. She uses hers until they stop working.

1st generation 4 GB iPod Nano in black; I got it right after launch!

Then I bought an 80 GB iPod classic in 2007. And last week I picked up a 2nd gen touch (32 GB). I still use all 3!

...which I still use daily. And is also the ONLY iPod I have. I use it for music (and address book entries) only. I keep it running when at work and at home; but if I have to get up and walk around, it's very convenient. I have no accessories that it didn't come with. I do use a utility to move music from the iPod to the Mac - a great benefit (thank you to the developers, who have been paid).
It is not the model per se of the iPod that qualifies it, but the software and hardware, and Apple's attention to the end user by keeping in the development loop and updating the iTunes software consistently.
PS: I didn't buy it; I won it in a contest. It was only after I started using the iPod that I realized what a huge benefit it was for me. Had I known, I would have bought it. What a great little innovation. Kudos to Apple for being prescient enough about the music market to develop such a great product, and in iTunes, such a great marketing advance.

2nd gen 10GB.

Gift from my dad. When they came out I didn't "get it." I had a large music collection on CD and thought that mp3s sounded like crap. But it was one of the few things that have come along in my lifetime that changed the way I live my life. The instant access combined with mobility changed the way I listened to music. They still don't make one big enough to hold all of my music. But I can say the same about hard drives in general.

The only other impact that readily comes to mind with similar gravity is the iPhone in general and specifically the inclusion of the App Store.

I don't even think I saw an ipod until the 3G iteration.

No kidding. I guess had too many broke friends who couldn't afford such things. :)

My first was the 5th gen 30GB video model in black. I bought it from the Apple refurb store right after the 5.5 update. I still use it as my primary iPod. I replaced the battery in in a couple of months ago, which was fairly painless.

A couple of months ago, I picked up a 1st gen 16GB Touch. Best Buy had them discounted to help clear out inventory. I thought the price difference was enough to warrant getting the first gen instead of springing extra for the new model. I still love it, although the external volume controls would be nice. I have started using the Touch as a PDA of sorts.

30GB 4th gen that I found in the snow one morning while walking to work. It looked like it had been there over the weekend and I was pretty surprised when after thawing out, it worked fine. I felt like trying to find out who owned it, but then I noticed it was filled with Snoop Dog and Bone Thugs n Harmony. I felt like I was doing a service by restoring it to factory defaults. :p

I've since then bought an 80GB Classic, 2GB Shuffle, and 16GB iPhone.

My first iPod was the 20GB U2 edition, not because I liked the band, but because of the colors. Call me crazy for spending the extra money just for the colors. ;)

I bought my first ipod which was a 2nd Gen 20GB the same day I bought my first Mac which was a Dual 1Ghz Power Mac. I sold the computer a few years ago, but still have the ipod packed away somewhere. Have gone through about 6 different ipods and now have a black 8GB Nano and 1st Gen 16GB iPod Touch.

I was a late adopter. Got my 5G 60 GB video iPod to go along with my MacBook in August of 2006. Both of those were my first Mac purchases; my wife had a 1g shuffle before I got the 5g, though.

Now I have a 16 gig 1G touch, and my 5G has slowly been phased out...

gosh that thing is hideous!! i still really like that one that had the 4 touch sensitive buttons on it that lite up - generation 2 was it? I never owned one but I always thought it was pretty darn cool.

That would be the 3rd gen - the 20GB model was my first iPod. 1st and 2nd gen look almost identical.

By the way, I nearly bought a 5.5G iPod 30 GB (white case) when I bought my 2G iPod nano (4 GB blue case). If I did that it's likely it still would be my only iPod I have now.
