A baby boy has been born in California with 24 perfectly formed fingers and toes - six on each hand and foot.

Being born with additional digits - or being a "polydactyl" - is not wholly uncommon, but it is unusual to see the condition on every extremity.

The Bay Area hospital said staff did not notice the extra digits on ultrasound scans - and did not even spot it when Kamani Hubbard was born.

It was his father, Kris, who realised his son had some unusual features.

Polydactylism is genetic and the father said there was a family history of the condition. However he added his son's case was unique.

"Some family members have had six fingers, not completely developed. But not the toes."BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7870769.stm).

Oh wow, you don't even notice any difference unless you really look at them. I wonder if they're planning to have the 4 extra digits removed? Imagine the difficulty he'll have finding gloves

This kid should learn to play the guitar or piano at an early age!

His fingers are very well formed. Huh... And uniformly on all four quadrants is pretty amazing. I guess occasionally it would be kind of cool to have six fingers on each hand. :o

Gloves and shoes might be a bit hard, though. :o

I hope not, we should celebrate diversity more.

Exactly my first thought.

I think it's really cool, a bit like X-Men only more grounded :)

I'd love to knit a pair of 6 fingered mittens!

I thought kind of the same thing. I was wondering if having six fingers opens up any "new" guitar chords.

Buying gloves is not going to be easy for this guy.

this bit concerns me though:

The Bay Area hospital said staff did not notice the extra digits on ultrasound scans - and did not even spot it when Kamani Hubbard was born.
It was his father, Kris, who realised his son had some unusual features.

So the hospital staff didn't notice?
:eek::confused:

So this is the kid who grows up to kill Inigo's father?

:confused:Hmm... if I were ma or pa I'd double check that the baby really is a boy.

It would be too, too easy for me to suggest this child is probably descended from settlers who arrived in the States from Lincolnshire, so I won't mention it.

He's probably got 2 and they haven't noticed yet...

It's the digital age!

This will definitely help his typing speed.

This kid should learn to play the guitar or piano at an early age!

He would have the best chance to be the world's unanimous International "Guitar Hero".

They live in the Bay area, so gloves shouldn't be a big concern. For shoes, just go with wide sizes. Baby shoes might be hard to find, though.
