What is http://www.apple.com/foo ?
I was just playing around to get a 404, but lo and behold, it's a real page! Anyway, just thought it was interesting enough to show others.

Strange, seems to be an archive of some of their old web material?

No, its just a custom 404....

As Mr T would say:
"Stop browsing Crazy made up addresses, Foo"

No, this is what I get:

./education/macosxforteachers/old
./la/enews/oct/old
./la/t/es/old
./lae/education/macosxforteachersold
./mx/t/1/old
./mx/t/new/7old
./mx/t/old
./mx/ipod/old
./mx/itunes/old
./storenews/coupons/mpeg2/old
./support/hold
./trailers/columbia/maid_in_manhattan-old
./trailers/columbia/charliesangelsfullthrottle-old
./trailers/disney/monsters_inc-old
./trailers/fox/solaris/clips-old
./trailers/newline/the_two_towers/images-old
./trailers/paramount/star_trek_nemesis-old
./trailers/universal/thetruthaboutcharlie-old
./pro/index_old

That's it exactly, no html markup at all. It may be a 404 for some, but I'm still getting that.

Well, it's the same page you get when you go to:

http://www.apple.com/nosebleed

:p

Um, yes it is... (of course, the ads will change every few reloads).

actually, it's not. or it's not all the time. when i first checked it, i got that custom 404 with the ads. now all i get is that weird text file posted above. and it is just text -- there's no HTML wrapped around it.

Wrong... You are probably including a final slash after the foo. Don't do that - it won't work! http://www.apple.com/foo
I have attached a screenshot.

flowbee, it is different. apple.com/nosebleed gets the page not found.
apple.com/foo is a list of some sorts.

very peculiar.

I'm on Safari (1.2.1) and apple.com/foo gets me the standard 404 page. With and without the trailing slash (foo/) I get the same page.

I get the exact same page (less the ads rotating) at:
apple.com/foo
apple.com/bar
apple.com/nosebleed

Hmm, how odd. I'll test this when I return to my Mac (I'm stuck on a Windows machine right now; that's why the screenshot I attached in an earlier post shows a Windows interface).

<edit> Tested on my Mac (10.3.3); got the list.</edit>

ie 5.1, OS 9 gets the list.

now this is interesting: if you take the first letter of each word on that page, it spells "emoleoolteolemmt1omtn7mtomiomioscmoshtcmotccotdmiotfscotntttiotpstnotuttacopio."

... and i think you know where i'm going with that!

Exactly what I was getting... until a few minutes ago. Now I'm getting the 'list' on the foo page. (And no, I wasn't adding an extra slash after foo. I was just clicking the link in the original post.)

Rower, try the foo page again and then hit your 'refresh' button.

Still the same thing in Safari, FireFox and IE 5.2 - refreshed multiple times, even emptied Safari's cache, and it's still the same page, less the random banner images.

Weirdness...

take another look, expecially at the very end:

emoleoolteolemmt1omtn7mtomiomioscmoshtcmotccotdmiotfscotntttiotpstnotuttacopio

see that? tuttacopio is the italian word for being far, far too amused by the ridiculous insinuation that there's some meaning to a random string of characters.

Hmm, Safari 1.2.1 and I get the custom 404 every time. No matter how many reloads, I don't get the list or anything mentioned previously. Both /foo and /foo/ get me the custom 404. Even though this is absurd, I liked the Think Different one. I guess you always learn something.
