My local John Lewis store in Oxford St ,London,have e-mailed me to confirm new stock of I-Macs should be with them within days,the fact they have been out of stock for about 8 weeks on this particular product,suggests this might be the news many people have been waiting for.???????????????.[24"-i-mac}

Without an announcement of an event yet tells me that they might be restocking with the limited iMacs that are in circulation. I'm guesssin March for the updated ones.

Why old iMacs then? And iMac availability is limited now so I can't see why would they even have old models? It takes 1-3 week to get iMac if you order from Apple.com.
Maybe he lied to you or he doesn't know what's going on.

It always say that. If you look at some threads here you'll notice that people who ordered iMac have to wait more than 24 hours. And Apple has told for resellers that iMac availability is limited (so they can't order new ones anymore)

It won't be August, man... the update will have been out for about 4 months then. :p
And then you'll be stuck between the (now next update) current model and mobile Nehalem in late, late Q4.

I'm not saying that it is going to happen this week, but I don't think there will be an event with this release. It's unlikely that the iMac will have a major enough upgrade to merit an event.

Why not walk 5 minutes to the Apple Store and ask them?
Because they know less than we do? Because Apple tells their retail stores NOTHING? They get new products the evening before the day of release so that their employees can be trained on them. That's it.

I had no idea.
It's a separate dvd just 'slipped in' the box (rather than properly packaged with keyboard and install discs etc.)
"iLife '09 CPU Drop in DVD" with a sticker saying to upgrade to 10.5.6 with software update before installing iLife 09.

Well if refurbs aren't meant to have it, it's a nice bonus ;) To be honest knowing whether or not it would come with iLife '09 wasn't a huge issue to me.
I got the top end 24" since they had it in refurbished... that way I figured I'd feel a little less left behind if they do eventually bump up the iMac speeds/chips in the near future

Nope, and you're right; there isn't one.
What would they change it to, anyway? They've found their design. This look will stay for quite some time.
The structure hasn't changed since the G5, so you know that Apple is sticking with it.
Now all we need to see is a little touchup to the cheese grater case on the Mac Pro to make it even better...

I think to fit all the hardware :P. Have you compared a iMac to 24" ACD monitor? I still can't believe they can fit all of that in such a small space. Plus, I like the "chin" :P.
Oh and about the redesing thing: no they won't change its looks but maybe with the whole new cooling rumor they'll change the insides of the iMac for a new layout in an effort to get the cooling as good as it can get.

So, I wanna ask you some questions, even though I have seen the threads. While waiting for this new iMac and seeing lots of pics of people having setups with MBP and an external monitor, I was wondering should I also go in that direction. The main reason I am waiting for the iMac is obviously the refreshed hardware and a quad cpu. But since only the top model will have the quad cpu and will be a lot more expensive, I am asking you, what are the chances that the basic models (talking about 24" here) will have better performance than the unibody Macbook Pro? The clock is ticking...
Thanks,

Quite high. The thing is, macbooks are about portability, you are going to get a better performance on a desktop, because it's powered by mains, and it's not portable. It really is up to you, but you'll be spending money for a poorer computer, if you don't need the portability.

MBP and ext. monitor is more expensive than high end iMac. 24" base model is/will be more powerful than MBP. If you want portability, buy MBP + mon. otherwise iMac.

Lady looking at iMac models for her daughter was told that they were not getting any more stock of the current models & that they could sell her a display model. Don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but "imminent" could mean anything from tomorrow to 2 months away.
All models of the iMac are still fully in stock in many places, including the Apple Store in at least the UK & US...
Don't get your hopes up that it's right around the corner, people have been reporting these sporadic stock shortages for like a month.

All my local Best Buy's in a 50 mile radius and that is three, all are out of 24" iMac's and only 2 have 3 or less 20" iMac's. All have all the laptops you want in all configurations. A friend works at my local Best Buy and he looked on the computer at work and none were in route to the store either and there is a steady flow of all laptops.
There is a Apple speciality store (MegaByte) here and it has only 1 24" iMac and told me they were told no 3.06ghz iMac's were available. All this store does is sell all Apple products and services them.
It is obvious the new ones are close, but how close is the question. Apple may let things drag on for a week or two or more. Who knows.
This will be my first Apple and I want a fully decked 24" or if a 28" does appear then i will go that route.
Apple somewhat enjoys being evasive.

I wonder if their stocks are low because new products are coming very soon, or perhaps they're low because the stores aren't ordering replacements for computers they sell for fear they won't be able to sell them before new ones come out.

It is the chicken or the egg argument. Makes you wonder.
All the indicators are in place.
1. Length of timeframe is plausible as Apple has updated products with this length of time on them many times before.
2. Stock IS dwindling.
3. 3.06ghz is gone from everywhere but Apple Online store just about.
These are facts. The rest is just rumor. Some more believable than others.
I do not suspect a major overhaul. No need for one. Update the processors, ram, video card and maybe screen to led and keep on rolling I think.
A 28" isn't going to roll out without a event debut and a 28" is kind of a bad idea in this economy. If you want it just get a Mac Pro and a 30" Apple monitor will probaly be Apple's stance.
I personally would like a 28" iMac Pro, who knows. I'd be happy with a upgraded 24". I sure would like for it to have a Quad core processor. and the ability to take up to at least 6gb of ram and I'd like to put 8gb in it.

The thing that bothers me most about waiting (which I have been doing for a long time now) is that I have the money with me just begging to be spent. The money is theirs! They have just have to do this one damn thing. I'm sure my own experience can be extrapolated to the general population thinking about switching/buying a new computer.

The Macbooks also have the multitouch trackpad, which was a big deal for me. I don't need the portability, but that interface is really convenient and an all around joy for me to use. It'd be nice if it were a bit wider, by maybe 25%, but still great. Can't imagine life without it now.

Personally I think people who frequent these forums are the minority - we are all too aware and concerened about purchasing our iMac at the beginning of a revision life cycle. The majority of purchasers don't concern themselves with these things and just go into their local store and pick-up the lastest/current version of the iMac.

You're actually spot on, the kind of people that hang out here waiting months for an upgrade are such a tiny minority.
The vast majority of Apple customers will just buy what they want when they can afford it, clearly people are still buying the iMac in droves for it to be going out of stock in places.
So you could argue that Apple have the new iMac ready right now, the only thing that is stopping it hitting; is their iMac sales are still high so they want to clear out the current inventory of it.
As nice as it is to believe Apple have some higher purpose of moral or quality standards, they're in it for the money, every time. :p

These rumors have been circulating for ages now...are we just kidding ourselves that a new imac update is coming? If this Wu guy is so wrong all the time why has everyone got all excited and believed him that there's definitely an update coming! Do we have any proper evidence AT ALL that a new imac update is on its way...i mean from a reliable source as im starting to wander if were all waiting for something that isn't going to happen any time soon....
Ive spoken to a few apple resellers and not one of them beleives anything new is on its way, everyones sying theres no 3.06ghz imacs in stock anywere which means new ones must be on the way....the apple reseller near me say the never stocked this model and that they have always specially orded this model anyway.... I think weve all got a bit hopeful and started trying to read into things way too much to give them hope for a new machine... Probably time to either buy the current one or be prepared to wait a long time (in which case you probably dont need a new computer at the moment anyway)

Why would a reseller have any more information than anyone else? Fact of the matter is they want to sell what they have in stock, because when a new iMac comes out the old ones they have in stock drop dramatically in price. Seems like a pretty simple concept.

Just Google "Apple Tuesdays" You'll find article(s) on why Apple releases on a Tuesday, and a whole host of things that happened on a Tuesday. Never in my memory has anything been released by Apple any other day. They even update iTunes every Tuesday.

Not sure how a 28" iMac is a bad idea in this economy but suggesting an uber-expensive Mac Pro AND a 30" Apple monitor is a good idea in this economy
FWIW, I, for one, do anticipate at least one significant "wow" feature in the new iMac. Apple lately has been making big waves with most of its hardware products for the past couple years (multi-touch trackpad, MBA, iPhone, unibody MB, 8-hr battery in 17" MBP, etc)... not just minor spec bumps. And with HP's all-in-one sporting a unique touch feature (not that appealing IMO), a tiltable/mountable screen, and a TV tuner card, the iMac is no longer cutting edge in the all-in-one arena...which I'm guessing kinda irks the folks at Apple.

I do apologise, I did a quick google (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=what+day+was+april+28+2008&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a) and I just saw in the third result "April 28. It's pretty disgusting to be waiting and waiting for nothing. I don't need an iMac right now, but I just want it...
I think I'll be waiting until 1th March, and if no announcements or strong rumors are made by the time, I'll buy an iMac.
(If Apple releases an imac just the next week I buy it, I'll be able to change it, isn't it? I have 14 days... But if Apple waits until late march... )

Same here, kind of. My current computer has gotten a bit slow and can't run OS X properly. But, since I don't really need a computer right this second, I think it's best to be a bit more patient. Looking at past release dates, Apple tends to refresh between January and the end of April.
I do have a feeling they're trying to release the refresh with Snow Leopard. It would make a larger impact for both than releasing them separately, and they won't have to deal with angry customers who will be upset if they have to buy Snow Leopard a month later. Also, OS X Leopard currently has a 4GB RAM limitation. I imagine if they want to keep up with PC manufacturers, they'll want to give someone buying a custom order iMac the option of 6GB or 8GB, which would be possible with Snow Leopard. ALSO, it's been nearly a year since they've done a major refresh. So, I'm guessing a mid-March release.

I'll be waiting a bit longer since I want to get the new 24" refurbished to save $300.

Actually Leopard is not the limitation to 4GB, otherwise a Mac Pro wouldn't be able to handle 32GB of RAM, it's the hardware that limits it I believe.
Also I recieved my low end refurbished 24" iMac today and it did come with iLife 09 for those who were wondering earlier in the thread.

I wouldn't kick myself if I buy now. No major upgrades coming, so what do you guyes actually wait? No Core i7's, no new design, no 28". Just speed bumbs like new GPUs and CPUs, DDR3.
If current iMacs would ship immediately, I would buy it right now, but it doesn't. I don't want to wait week or two to get, and new ones are even closer then.
My guess is late Feb or beginning of March.

This thread isn't about people who need Mac Pros but about people interested in an iMac...and the comment I responded to was talking about the viability of a 28" iMac.
I would consider a 28" iMac (~$2300 USD). I would never consider a Mac Pro with a 30" ACD ($2800 + $1800). An iMac consumer is, in general, a different demographic from a Mac Pro consumer; so my point was that suggesting an iMac consumer consider a Mac Pro paired with a display that costs almost as much as an iMac itself is ridiculous.

The thing is, in all honesty, the promise of better specs is fine but comparing my 17" Core Duo to the 20" Core 2 Duo is almost enough to make me rush down to Buchanan Street in Glasgow right now.
What I'd love to see in the new 20" iMac is a bigger hard drive, although for just £29 extra you can upgrade the 250GB to 320GB when you buy via the Apple Store.
I think if there's still nothing by early March, I'll call it a day and just buy the current 20" model.

Yeah, a new graphics chipset would be nice.
I've long since sold my games consoles (Xbox and PS3) due to the boring nature of modern day gaming, but I do miss the odd shot of Call of Duty 4 and would like to think the iMac could run it at a decent enough pace.

Meh, either way I was going to get a refurbished current gen 24" cause I don't have money for a new one, the refurbished ones would just drop in price if the new ones came out, but I love my 24" and it's a lot better than my previous 17" 2.0 C2D, so even if they release new ones in a month I think a month worth of use out of it is worth the higher price, since I assume it will only drop about $100 or so anyway.

Compared to what I have now, a 3 year old 17" Core Duo White iMac, the current 20" entry level model is a huge step up. I'm not going to sit around and check threads filled with more rumors when I could be using a machine I need NOW.
While an update is coming, I don't envisage it being any more than a bump in spec ... and right now I can't risk the £ to $ rate making the price go UP.

Your name is very appropriate for the ability of the answer to the question you asked to do us any good ever. :D ;)
As has been said, Apple doesn't tell the Freak Squad anything.
Apple doesn't even tell the employees at their OWN stores when things come out. They learn the night before launch when they are trained on the new shipment that came in that afternoon.

Anything, anyone tells you is nothing more than a rumor. I have had a Mac speciality store (over 15 years old) that sells nothing but Apple products here tell me that they know when something is coming out the EXACT same time I do. In fact the owner I was speaking to told me she frequents here at least at the beginning of the week to see what is up as Apple tells its dealer network nothing. Period.
The day they release info she told me there will be an e-mail in her in inbox explaing basically the same thing Apple dumps on us all.
She told me she expects a iMac update any time as it is over due. This is 15 years+ experience speaking too.

I've just rushed off to the UK Apple website and they still have them .. the other option is a 320GB HDD instead of the stock 250GB HDD for £674.
Thing is, how reliable are Apple Refurbs really?
With the iMac in particular I'm worried that there may be scratches or smudges INSIDE the glass covering the screen or that there could be chips/scratches in the aluminum body/foot. I'm all for saving £137 but not at the expense of quality.

Worth noting for UK members who are considering purchasing and waiting for updates. If Apple accounted for the recents falls in GBP vs US Dollar then at today's rate, the entry level 20" iMac would cost £831 and the entry 24" would set you back £1247.
In the case of the latter, that's £120 more - not insignificant - if Apple choose to bring prices in line. I'm guessing there will be some price restructuring as and when new iMacs arrive.

Yup, and the 20" iMac Refurb down from £929 to £674 has gone out of stock ... and rightly so. The entry level 20" is still there, down from £782 to £645 but until these cheques clear from my design work my hands are completely and utterly tied.

It's possible but remember these aren't sold as used they're sold as refurbished, they usually fix any problems before selling them to make them look like new. What a weird, weird question?
Hey if I got a new Mac I'd want that welcome video, especially if it's your first, regardless of if it's Refurb or New. :p
When I got my new imac a week or two ago it came with ilfe 09. I got mine in chicago, Illinois though. I've heard rumors that the new imac might be released in April and will have a quad core processor, or better. Anyone think this is true.
April would be considered a bit too far away imo, an entire year without an update is pretty uncharacteristic for the iMac, early March is looking most likely right now.
As for the quad-core, fairly reasonable prediction/rumour but I'd love to know where you heard it ;) And where you heard the April thing too!

Anybody who doesn't get a discount (I get Higher Education, not sure if Apple does a Military one?) should always buy refurb unless you're desperate to get something that requires BTO.
They're quite literally as good as new.
Yes they offer a discount for both federal and local government employe's
It is about the same, within a couple of dollars.

Ok first off, this discussion could also take place in the 2009 iMac topic. I'd be a lot easier for me to process all of your idea's in to making an estimate on spec level and or release date. However for this once I will say this. If for any reason you need a mac now go buy one. If you need one in say end of Feb. begin March; don't. For the few (fairly reliable) rumors we've had about the iMac, only one has been pretty strong; the iMac will come in Q1 2009. Q1 ends March, so really do start thinking harder about getting it now or not. My guess (which you can read in the wonderful opening post in the 2009 iMac topic :D:D) is still February 24th, but if that won't do it, it'll be begin March.

TBH I prefer a few threads rather than one massive sprawling one covering every aspect of the iMac - it actually gets tedious to sift through. Currently I don't see any real issue with the number of threads on this forum covering the iMac release, possible spec and such like - multiple threads make it easy to quickly rule which thread you wish to read updates on and which you don't. I visit this one regularly and also the rather presumptuously titled "Everything We Know....";);)

I have been waiting since October '08, and my roommates can't possibly hear any more of my moaning about new iMacs. And I know I know, 'they'll be released when they're released', but that doesn't do me any good! Say they're gonna be updated at the end of March (ffs). It'll probably take another month or so before the damned computer actually hit the stores. I dont really care to much about because in all honestly i know I would never tap the full potential of the Quad Core. That being said, i would be super pissed if i bought a current imac just for apple to release a new one with updated interior hardware like a new nividia chip etc... The iMac does not need "new cosmetics". As someone pointed out here previously, if Apple were unhappy with iMac's look why would they make the Unibody Macbooks look the same?
The Mini, on the other hand, needs a complete refresh.

The iMac would be just fine with better ATI Radeon cards. The iMac doesn't need Nvidia cards.
As for for a fresh new look, I guess if they use Quad Cores they might need to make the cases thicker. So, a slight fresh new look is possible.

Well, be prepared to be "let down".
The iMac does not need, nor in my opinion will it receive a cosmetic overhaul. As I said previously, Apple like a uniform look across their entire range and the new Unibody Macbook and Macbook Pro range are designed in the same appearance as the Aluminum & Glass iMac.
Don't also forget that the G5 iMac kept it's look as it moved to Intel processors during the transition from PowerPC to Intel.
I know this is Macrumors, but people would be wise to let common sense and previous Apple experiences speak for themselves. Of course it could be who is wrong but using previous experience and the aforementioned common sense, I think it's fairly obvious that the iMac update will be a non-event ... literally.
Personally, I'm holding off although I almost bought a 20" entry level iMac for £645 from the Refurb Store two days ago. For me, currently using the original Intel iMac 17" Core Duo model, the step up in spec would have been noticeable, but I am prepared to pay the £800 for a new model should the prices stay the same as they currently are (that's another topic altogether right there), but I was almost tempted.
I use my Mac mainly for Adobe CS3 programs, mainly Dreamweaver, Flash, and Photoshop as well as watching video files and listening to music via iTunes. Gaming means nothing to me these days since I stepped away from the (now boring in my opinion) gaming scene after owning all three of the current generation systems and selling them on.
My current iMac isn't a slouch when it comes to CS3 but I could use the greater screen real estate and I wouldn't mind if CS3 ran a little quicker and was a little "snappier", so perhaps a Refurb would be a good option. I've set my own deadline for purchasing my new system; March 23rd.
If there's no new systems by then I'll go ahead and buy regardless. If there's new systems available and the speed bump isn't as great as many here have hyped it up to themselves as being, then I'll look at getting an "old" iMac on the Refurb Store.

Yeah, the stand used on the 24" LED Cinema Display could be brought into the iMac range, which would give a slight change in look.
I honestly don't expect some massive overhaul on the iMac ... but for some reason I think the Mac Pro could come out with a new SKU that will blow the professional users away.
Quad Core in the iMac would be "nice" but is it necessary, and would Apple want to bridge the gap between "Consumer" and "Professional" users so closely, especially given the cost difference? The only price increase I see happening with the iMac is the Sterling to US Dollar rate decrease, but again that's just my little warped angle on events.
Regarding the iMac, I think quicker Core 2 Duo's, bigger HDD, nVidia GPU's, and LED displays will be the basis for the 20" models when the upgrade happens.

Agreed. The new Aluminum keyboard goes great with my white 17" Core Duo, but when I see it next to the Aluminum & Glass iMac it looks ... a wee bit strange. I wouldn't go as far as to say it looks grossly out of place, but there's just something not quite right with it. Again, it's down to perception and opinion.
And, just to be fussy, I'd like to see the adaptor on the power chord that attaches to the back of the machine made black so the entire back is the same colour .... but that's just being really pedantic!

I assume you're asking why wouldn't they update the cosmetics? For the very reasons I took the time to list in previous posts. ;)
1. Apple have always liked to have a uniform "look" throughout their entire range of computers.
2. The latest Macbook and Macbook Pro range were brought into line with the Aluminum and Glass iMacs in terms of appearance.
3. The Aluminum and Glass iMac was launched at a relatively low key "event" by Steve Jobs in August 2007 ... if I remember correctly? That means it's less than 2 years old in terms of design. The white iMac, which the Alu & Glass is identical too in design, seems to be the design Apple has settled on for the iMac.
4. The G5 iMac kept it's look for numerous years, went through various transitions (iSight, FrontRow) and the look lasted well into the Intel transition in early 2006.
5. The Mac Mini remains the only system now "outside" the uniform look Apple has brought to it's range, which is why I suspect the most exciting announcement will be regarding that system IF anything happens with it at all.

Look at the PowerPC era (G3s, G4s, G5s). ;)
2. The latest Macbook and Macbook Pro range were brought into line with the Aluminum and Glass iMacs in terms of appearance.
They should have done this earlier in my opinion.
3. The Aluminum and Glass iMac was launched at a relatively low key "event" by Steve Jobs in August 2007 ... if I remember correctly? That means it's less than 2 years old in terms of design. Every couple years the design will change.
4. The G5 iMac kept it's look for numerous years, went through various transitions (iSight, FrontRow) and the look lasted well into the Intel transition in early 2006.
Apple probably did not have any new ideas back then on how to re-design the iMac, so they kept the same design for the Intel switch.

Firstly, can you please not do that God awful quoting separate comments? It's a massive inconvenience on a number of forums I use and it's always asked to be stopped. If you're quoting multiple users then fine, but when it's comments from the same person just quote the post and reply below ... addressing each point separately doesn't get a point across any better or worse but does make quoting back an absolute chore.
Basically, everything is open to perception but as I said it's down to common sense. I simply do not see the need for an iMac redesign and believe it is not going to happen. If the speed bump is less than considerable and the design does change, then I'd be likely to go for the existing Aluminum & Glass design because I think it's stunning. My Uncle has one, after I got him into Apple, and it's a gorgeous piece of kit. I don't often think my white iMac is ugly, but after seeing his new iMac I can come home feeling a little ... green. :D
Stephen Lynch is an American stand up comedian who sings "rude and controversial" songs. I first seen him on the Paramount Comedy channels' "Comedy Club" before looking up more of him on YouTube. He came to the Edinburgh Festival last year and I took my wife to see him and had a superb time ... my jaw and sides were sore for days. :D

I've not had the pleasure of using the new Macbook's outside of the Glasgow Apple Store ... I considered one in place of a new iMac, especially since they pop up on the Refurb Store for £799 sometimes.
However, with a 13.5 display I want to utilise that power in my design work and simply cannot afford to buy a 24" LED Cinema Display to go with it. Therefore, it's a no go.

I am most likely going for the entry level 20" iMac, and was almost tempted by the Refurb Store's offer of that very model for £645 but decided against it for two reasons:
1. The pending update and the possibility that the price could come down ... as unlikely as that seems with the GBP to USD rate.
2. I had no experience of the Refurb Store and decided to source out opinions on it and how good products bought from it are, both in terms of cosmetics and reliability. I have been impressed with the feedback on the Refurb Store and will seriously consider any future offers that come on there.

I'll wait a few days more before buying a new iMac, but I would like to know some quiestions:
If I buy an iMac with ATI 2600XT, which shold I pick (20" or 24")?
I think 24" is better to show all expandable menu's of my CAD software, but bigger screen will slow 3D mode?

I'd be happy to see the 20" go up to:
20" LED display (glossy suits the design, although it's not ideal for design according to some).
320GB HDD as standard (this option as an upgrade when buying new is only £29 - 250GB to 320GB).

Very good post, may I also ask why do you prefer the imac to the new Alu macbooks? thanks :)
That's quite a simple answer really.
Firstly, I don't think the new Macbooks represent value for money ... £929 for a 13.5 display, regardless of it being LED and encased in a unibody design is just ludicrous. They often appear on the Refurb Store for £799, which is better but still not ideal considering my line of business.
As I explained previously, things are tight financially in my home for the reasons mentioned. If I bought a Macbook I would want to utilise the extra processing power over my existing iMac, but designing websites on a 13.5 display is just not worth contemplating, no matter how impressive the Macbook would look when brought to Clients premises for displaying content, etc.
Therefore, I would need to consider an Apple Cinema Display, with the 24" LED being "made specifically for" the new Macbook and costing well over £600 ... again, I don't have that kind of money to throw around right now or in the foreseeable future.
So, in terms of "bang per buck" (as our American friends sometimes say), the 20" iMac represents what I need right now:
More screen real estate, upgrading from 17" to 20".
Faster CPU, upgrading from 1.83GHz Core Duo to 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo.
More Memory, upgrading from a max of 2GB to a max of 4GB.
Larger Hard Drive, upgrading from 160GB to (potentially) 320GB with the optional £29 upgrade when buying new.
That's pretty much my reasoning.

Or the 20" could be discontinued. The new iMacs could be 24" and 30".
Computers are getting bigger and bigger as time progresses. :D
I don't see 30" iMacs coming, again just my gut instinct. I sound like a right boring old sod, but I refuse to let the rumors part of Macrumors get me overly excited.
I simply don't see them moving the entire Mac range to such an upmarket and overpriced state and leaving "budget" buyers with the only option of a Mac Mini.

When you buy a computer on the Apple Store online there are various, sometimes limited options, that you can change such as memory, hard drive size, graphics chipset, pre-installed software.
The 20" iMac entry level model has the option to upgrade the default 250GB hard drive to a 320GB one for £29 on top of the original £782 price point.

What gets your more bang for your buck? A 2.66 imac or the 2.4 imac? in terms of basic fuctions such as watching youtube, movies, surfing the internet? I dont use any graphic demanding programs or plan to do any extensive movie editing.

I'd go for the entry level 2.4GHz for what you're describing, especially if you see one on the Refurb Store at the £645 price point ... are you from the UK?

Some thoughts on a redesign:
It is clear that recent redesigns share a black and aluminum look, the first being the August 2007 iMac
A redesign need not be major; the October 2005 iMac had a minor design change from its predecessor
The iMac is likely to keep its existing design, at least for a few more years
But there may be a small design change with the coming update, especially if it also has quad-core
The Mac mini is more likely to have a redesign, major or otherwise, than the iMac

Yeah, has anyone heard anything about snowleapord? The same page on apple has been up for almost a year now.
The g4 was pretty cool. The last couple of macs were all awesome. They should make an aniversiry edition for each imac.

It does seem that Apple is waiting to dump Snow Leopard and the new iMac's out at the same time. Longer things linger on the more likely it seems. Which makes me tend to believe that that something like a new OS revision is not coming out without a keynote event.

That would only happen if Apple wasn't a company.
Because they care about the money.
So they won't "build" it "slowly".

Even if Apple wanted to, wouldn't a simultaneous release would mean that the OS people were testing new hardware, while the hardware people were testing a new OS. It wouldn't be impossible, but it would be much easier to do one at a time.

So, having built them and boxed them, they're going to reopen the package and put the gold-master version of snow leopard on them?
Otherwise, they're just sticking the new OS in the box for you to load, and there's not much point in doing that.

It would make no sense to me that in a fast-changing technology world you would hold up products that were ready for months while sales drifted off to competitors offering more advanced products than your current ones, just to wait for software that they don't even need. If iMacs were ready now, the smart marketing strategy would be to release them now with Leopard and advertise them as "Snow-Leopard ready," stating that they'll perform even faster when Snow Leopard comes out. Apple could offer discounts on the upgrade for customers who buy iMacs now, thereby hooking them into the Snow Leopard purchase. If iMacs were ready of course (which they aren't).
Besides, we know that Snow Leopard like all OS releases will have some big issues when it first comes out. If iMacs are released simultaneously, people will identify those issues with the iMacs and they'll get a reputation of being buggy. It will not be good PR for Apple.

But why would Apple order 800 000 units every month and start shipping in January? (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/12/23/new-imacs-shipping-january-2009/)
That's sure that new iMacs will not ship with Snow Leopard because of money issues and SL may come at the end of Q2 or Q3, so that doesn't make sense that Apple would push the update to there. After Q1 iMacs it's very likely that new ones will come out before end of the year (maybe Nehelem iMac then??)

I hope that the iMacs get updated really soon since I am ready to buy with credit card in hand. I am definitely going to go for the top of the line. I just hope it comes with a 9800 instead of the 9600. Also people were saying it may be a silent launch. I don't imagine it would because the entire desktop line is seriously over-due for updates. It seems to be that Apple is waiting for all the desktops to be ready before updating. It appears that is almost what they did with the notebooks before christmas except for the 17 incher. I just hope it is soon and that they don't wait for SL or i7. That would be too long to wait as I sold my Dell desktop before macworld and am now I only have a macbook.
BTW, this is my second post, although I have been lurking for over a year.

If Apple is going to release Clarksfield or Arrandale based iMacs before the end of this year, they're going to have to get on a faster development cycle than they seem to be at present.
