...the problems are that she's on T-Mobile in Ohio and I've got the latest firmware running on the beater. Can I JB and give it to her to run?

Thanks for any help, I'm trying to convert her from the PC world.

You can unlock any version of the 1st gen iphone. There are a ton of guides with pictures online.
 
+1 ^^^ Only thing missing on T-Mobile is the visual voicemail and I think anything operating on 3G. EDGE network and WiFi will have to suffice...
