I'm thinking this for my Alu MB.

500GB 7200RPM Seagate
1TB external for backups

Would that be good? Is it a bad idea to store that much on your notebook?

With 400GB full, how long would it take to boot? Five minutes?

OK. Erm..

Would that be good?

What for? Everyday data that is being backed up via time machine?

Is it a bad idea to store that much on your notebook?

No. That's what back-ups are for.

It won't make much difference to your normal boot time.

Yes, every day backup.

So, it wouldn't be a good idea to store 400GB of movies and music on my notebook?

What I meant was...

It's fine to store that much on your laptop, just as long as you have it backed up. So no problem.

Well it depends on if you want to back it up. My music and movies are on a server so the ones on my laptop don't need to be backed up, it's a waste of time and space so I tell Time Machine to not backup certain directories where I store those. Time Machine works fine if you're not backing up gigs a day, are you asking about a backup solution or a storage solution?

Any hard drive once you go past the 80% full capacity will start to slow down. Ideally you want to keep the drive less full or partition it to reduce seek times.

That's a good setup.

I just got one of these and partitioned a few hundred gigs for time machine and the rest for storing media that I don't want to clutter my macbook's hard drive with.
