I joined a PC support company as a Web Designer two years ago. I have used a mac for many years so I told them I would only join the company if they would buy me a mac. As you can imagine they looked at my little 17" iMac with horror! but slowly they became interested in my lack of raspberry restarts...

Now look at the place.

My roommate moved out last week, so I just moved my edit suite upstairs to his old room. There's still a little work to be done -- most notably, I need to get the proper wall mount for my third monitor, as the mount I have was missing a part. However, I think it's a really comfortable, clean and cool workspace! =)

Unfortunately, the photos don't do it much justice -- I've found that no matter how hard I try to hide wires (and how invisible they seem in person), the cable clutter always seems to "pop out" on camera. =S

I just got my own office at a stealth software startup (yeah, those still exist!) and got to put together my own workstation on a budget of $250 and parts on hand. This was the result:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3311/3198530826_e39435ea91_m_d.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tallgeek/3198530826/sizes/o/)http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3483/3197684825_38dc4b4312_m.jpg (http://flickr.com/photos/tallgeek/3197684825/sizes/o/in/set-72157612585156392/)
I provided the MacBook (and it's mStand) and the decorative art. They provided the desk, monitor, squishy keyboard and temperamental mouse. After getting pissed off and the keyboard and mouse, I provided my own:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3476/3213809709_d2c2b57a36_m.jpg (http://flickr.com/photos/tallgeek/3213809709/sizes/o/in/set-72157612585156392/)http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3411/3214658260_5df1cb8e69_m.jpg (http://flickr.com/photos/tallgeek/3214658260/sizes/o/in/set-72157612585156392/)
Why yes I am running OS X, Windows XP, Windows 7 and a Linux server all on my little MacBook. It has 6 GB of RAM in it. :D I added Das Keyboard, and a Logitech MX Revolution. They added a phone.

I totally agree, it looks great. makes me think of some reorganisation for my workplace, wallmounts seem to be nice.

Yeah, when I first started setting up wallmounts, I was thinking that the monitors are hanging over the desk anyway -- how much space was I really gaining? Turns out, quite a bit -- for instance, my little audio mixer is now sitting right where a monitor stand would have been in my old setup. Things like that can go right under the monitors; it works nicely.

Which wallmounts do you use? Iīm thinking of some Ergotron system, because the monitors stay very flexible that way, bur maybe you can recommend some other ones.

I have some Vantage Point UL01-B mounts (http://www.amazon.com/Vantage-Point-Ul01B-30-Inch-Swivel/dp/B000K10E1Y) -- I bought them because they were cheap, fit my needs and were available locally.

They're relatively flexible -- a good range of motion horizontally, and they tilt up and down. They're probably not the most flexible mounts out there... but they work great for me (since I have three monitors, I'm limited as to how much I can move them around if I want to keep them bumped up next to each other.)

The 17" no-glare MBP looks so professional. It gives a more robust feeling than the glare one. Oh well, they are both too expensive for me :o

Is it just me or is the 17 inch just too big? My 15 inch PowerBook is big enough. I want Apple to up the resolution on the MacBook 13 inch to 1440*900 and the MacBook Pro 15 inch to 1680*1050 so they are not 1 resolution down from the 17 inch in proportion to the screen size.

Woot - FedEx dropped off my 17 Inc MBP with no glare option.

Whoa, the 'matte' option makes the whole thing look totally different, even kind of strange. :confused: In terms of of aesthetics alone the top-section does not really match the rest of the design. That's just my most likely unpopular opinion, but a small price to pay for some anti-glare goodness.

I actually agree with your opinion and share it. Having the keyboard as black was only working with having the black border on the screen. Take that away and all of the sudden it just looks out of place!

That's just a rack for my MOTU 828mkII audio interface, Behringer ADA8000, and Alesis equalizer. I've got an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile audio interface there too that's not being used. I'm going to use it in my garage Powermac setup (pics to come once I get the 17" LCD studio display working again). Also, yeah it should probably be able to fit a 1U server :)

the white drawer unit is where much of my computer wires/stuff is. before buying it, it was littered all over the desk. i'm hoping to revamp my desk setup to clean it up some more when i get a new desk in the near future.

part of the reason the right side of the desk looks cluttered is because i use it also as a writing table for notes, etc, and also because the desk is very wide, and when i bought it, i needed it to be wide to fit the needs of a pc and study table.

thanks for your suggestions though.

I wish the current White MacBook was black. I would get a unibody if it had FireWire but it does not and I want the 9400m so a last model refurb is not an option I wonder if it would be possible to swap the logic boards between the old black and the new white.

Just wait till you have an apartment. Spending money on your setup and a living room set up.

Then being college students, parties are a must. Beer is not cheap. Drinks of any kind are not cheap.

If I added all the money we spend on drinking, everyone would have a Mac Pro.

How did you mount the monitors? Don't you have to me more or less non-destructive to the dorm? What is the size of the monitors?

obey908
Mar 2, 2009, 04:07 PM
2 22" monitors. with these mounts:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10828&cs_id=1082802&p_id=3613&seq=1&format=2

I have the apartment for the next 2 years, each mount put 2 holes in the wall. so I can easily cover them back up in 2 years. The cables are just running behind the obey giant faces (not through the wall)

Are you going to order the new Mac Pro UM?

Looking at the benchmarks, it's not worth it for me. It's only looking about 1.5x faster for my work, and that's not worth $5900 for the system, and thousands of dollars in RAM.

I am going to be ordering the ATi HD 4870 upgrade kit when it's available, however.

What small external drive? The black thing on the desk or the silver device in the background?

The black thing on the desk is a Kindle 2, and the thing in the background is my tv...just haven't got a better place for it right now except on top of the printer.

My dorm setup... Not the prettiest, but it gets the job done:

I use the Pismo for AIM, Facebook, MR, and other "mindless" stuff, thus leaving the MBP dedicated to actual work. I love actively using older hardware.

Keyboard is from the original iMac G3... Wacom Graphire Tablet (getting an Intuos soon). 250GB MyBook and 500GB MyBook behind the MBP, along with some Bose desktop speakers.

Here you go... I definitely recommend it as it's awesome and really thin, and the overlap on function keys doesn't bother me at all because all the other keys fit perfectly. I ordered mine from here (http://www.aevoe.com/shop/moshi.asp?PDLS1=30) on a Thursday and I had it arrived the following Monday to London! well worth it, and way thinner than the iSkin/zCover ones!

Haha, this response may be creepy, but it's only because I saw this setup a while ago and did my own research (on MRoogle and the rest of the interwebs) and found out what it is!

The desk and other desk-like items are by Bush (http://www.bushfurniture.com/).
I think he used this (http://www.bushfurniture.com/bushindustries/bushfurniture/productdetail/productdetail4.jsp?id=WC90466A&id4=TT2) and two of these (http://www.bushfurniture.com/bushindustries/bushfurniture/productdetail/productdetail4.jsp?id=WC90448A&id4=TT1), which are 48" but come in 36", 60" and 72" variants along with "peninsula" style with a rounded end.

[b]srl[/] bought it at Staples I believe, but you can also get them from Bush Office Furniture Direct (http://www.bushofficefurnituredirect.com/). You'll want to look at the Series A line in Hansen Cherry for that desk. :)

Hope this helps.

They are part of the Bush Cubix collection. You can find them in several places including on-line (store). I purchased those from Staples locally. Here is the link Bush Cubix (http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/StaplesProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogIdentifier=2&partNumber=SS990065)

The prices are not too bad. Not shown is a Lateral file which is however expensive and I've never understood why they charge so much for those.

The link will also show all the different color combos that are available. The furniture is very stable and looks great. The pictures really don't do it justice.

Yeah... I mean, since I'm taking the laptop and tablet off the desk daily (as well as one of the externals), cable wrap is massively inconvenient. I also need to make room for a flatbed scanner, which requires more movement. The whole art school thing means constant modifications and frequent, varied use of all my computer gear and workspace.

If it were to be a more permeant setup, I'd definitely do my best to hide the cable clutter.

You'd at least think with me having a UK keyboard that i would realise that the up arrow icon for commands like shift cmd W was for the shift key. I spent a week trying to press the up arrow. How was i supposed to know that the icon was right in front of me on the key? :o

@Wowzera
Yes, but it's not really on my desk. That's a little bedside chest that I can store stuff in. It's a handy perch for my Mac and phone, etc. Acts kind of like a night stand. The Glock does stay there, though, but it's usually pointed away from my bed. Not sure what was surprising about where I keep my gun. Perhaps child safety? I live by myself so that's not a concern of mine. I know some people who keep it under their mattress :) BTW, I live in Miami - gun laws are relatively liberal here. Crime has been going up as well lately (because of the deteriorating economy) so I feel even more vindicated in my decision to purchase and carry :D

@Wowzera

Screen isn't glossy. In fact, that's 2.16GHz Core Duo MBP.

@BovaM3someday
After I installed the app, I just swiped my finger across the screen to change the theme and then double-tapped the screen to get to the options. Hope that helps!

@pudrums
Thanks :) He's my little bud.

@lmps56
Yup :) Have to be different...glad to be able to add something new to the forum!

@tMac85
Yup, you guessed it. 2.16GHz. Guns aren't all that freaky once you get to know them :)
