how do people stand their MacBooks (Pros) so far away from their external monitor? How do you see the internal screen when working on the external?

Mark-Mac-Attack
Mar 16, 2009, 10:33 AM
How? I just move it to the left. ;)

Why? Because I don't use the internal display. I use a 30" display to surf the web, it's overkill already!

many probably dont use the laptop screen much. I use a 30 ACD and I don't use my mbp screen at all.

Cheers,

I'm not sure how to get the cabling tidier on the MBP... It seems that the ACD's single cable idea has it's downsides, as I'm stuck as to where to put the power adapter as the cable is really short.

On a side note, can you buy replacement ACD cables anywhere? eBay just seems to have the power adapter (brick).

Many people use the laptop as a secondary monitor for notification.

They put their email clients, IM clients twitter, so on on the laptop so that it is easy to see if they receive anything new. Kinda like a large screen version of growl.

or Documentations for when they are coding. they don't need to look at it all the time, just need a fast view of the docs for a few min at random time.

That is what I do and I still have mine closer than some people. I use both but I have a junk external monitor that is only taller than my PowerBook's built in display

Let me know what you think!

I like how the desktop wallpapers match the lamp. The only question is: Do you limit yourself to orange wallpapers or do you have a selection of lamps to go with a range of wallpapers...? ;) :D

Redesigned my home setup this week. Went out and bought a Griffin Elevator, an Apple Keyboard, and a Microsoft Arc Mouse to basically make a computer docking system.

Here's a link (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=5540047&postcount=847) to pictures of my previous setup along with images of my school theatre setup.

Current Setup

White MacBook (late 2007) | 2.2 GHz | 1 GB RAM | 120 GB Hard Drive | GMA X3100 | Leopard 10.5.6
8 GB iPod touch (1st gen) | 2.2.1
320 GB WD External HD
HP Photoshop 7960 Printer
Griffin Elevator Stand
Apple Wired Keyboard
Microsoft Arc Mouse
LG enV2 (Verizon Wireless)

And if you are going to quote my post, could you please do everybody a favor by deleting the image links, I posted quite a few and it'll just save other people from further work and frustration.

That's some great organization skills there buddy. I would've never thought to put the studio drive inside the elevator stand. Serves double duty...you take advantage of the functional space & you get the Knight Rider look with the WD drive lights at the same time! Thumbs up!

Thanks! I was trying to find a way to clear up desk space, because my desk is tiny. And before if I wanted to do written work while charging my computer or anything then there was practically no room and the lack of space became a real nuisance. And this way I can put the keyboard on top of the hard drive along with the mouse and have enough desk space to do other written work.

I actually really like it. takes some getting used to, but is great for traveling, and looks even better on a desk.

Just make sure you take the extra time to download the drivers for it. makes scrolling on it a lot better.

Here be mine then.

2009 2.66 Quad + 22" Dell 2209WA. Custom built the desk with a bit of work top, love it.

162985

Cable tidying took a while as well, and a lot of cable ties of course. 5 port network switch mounted to the bottom of the desk, as well as my wireless mouse receiver. Next idea would be some USB ports built into the top somehow, not sure how I'll do that though, will have to machine it out somehow, thats more of an idea than in a WIP.

162986

Might see if I can stretch to fitting a second 2209 on the desk, bit I think it'll be pushing it a little, we'll see.

Styxie
Mar 19, 2009, 10:20 AM
The headphones are Philips SHP895. They sound great, I've tested them against the famous Philips ones with the blue cushions (can't remember the exact model), and they sound just as good. They are pricey too, but soo worth it. The only downside is that they hurt your head after half an hour of listening. Some have stuck foam to the headband, but it makes the headphones look ugly. It does solve the issue though.

I don't think having wooden walls like that means he lives in a log cabin.

I've seen homes like that and they look perfectly normal from the inside.
I think it's more common in the midwest though.

Here in the west coast i've never seen a house with walls like that.

I'm thinking it's the old FCP keyboard. Read his sig, he's using a Kona so I guess he's an editor.

Does indeed look like the old FCP keyboard, I used to use one.

Mac Pro Nehalem 2.93GHz 8 core.

Nice setup but isn't it bad to run your computer without the side panel?

Mainly because the case is designed for airflow to keep heat down, so if the side panel is off then there is no way for the fans to circulate I high amount of air.

What I will say to people out there, is learn from my mistakes.

BUY WHAT YOU REALLY WANT FIRST TIME!

Do not compromise.

I started out with a 20" iMac, then messed around with a bunch of setups (PB, faulty MBP, 24" Samsung), then finally bought what I wanted first time round (MBP + 30"). Obviously if your ultimate setup is £20k then maybe not, but I would have saved money in the long run!

I just got the Cinema Display yesterday. It had a dead Magsafe connector, so I returned it for a new one today.

Which leaves me with a 24" LED Cinema Display and 2.0GHz MacBook. I am selling a 20" iMac which I no longer need. I didn't realise how poor the screen quality was on the iMac until I tried the Cinema Display. The colours are so much better, the viewing angle is so much better and it's nice not having the chin too!

neiltc13,

you are moving up to an ips panel vs the tn you had in the imac. hence the quality difference. it's a shame so many others don't know the different panel types and hence buy crappy tn monitors for cheap not realizing what they are really getting.

The real shame is people who don't need an IPS panel spending $800 on the Cinema Display to check email and browse the internet  Especially after some young twit at the Apple store told them it was "the only display that would work with their new Mac Mini without several expensive adapters"... (I heard this first-hand in my local Apple store, ridiculous.) Needless to say, I had a little conversation with that couple before exiting the store and pointed them to the $29 adapters ;)

In many cases, it is not that people don't know they're getting TN panels when they bought "cheap" monitors. For many people, it is not that they don't want to spend a lot more to buy a IPS panel, they simply cannot afford it. :(

You must understand that not everyone is as rich as you are. :(

I love your setup, but quick question, it appears you are some kind of architect. (correct me if I'm wrong.) Anyways, what CAD program(s) do you use?
I use archicad, highdesign and my first love and favourite sketchup. I mainly do 3D work which i render in Artlantis. This is getting a little slow especially animations hence the possibility of an upgrade. For everything else the PPC is still perfect they have been truly epic over the last 5 years.

I find that the small keyboard looks alot better and personally I don't use the number-pad enough to really need it on my keyboard.

From what I've seen most people actually prefer the smaller keyboards unless of course there using there computers for accounting practices and such, those tend to want the full-sized keyboard.

I've had the wireless one since they came out and have got so used to it, i've often used the big wired one but keep hitting it with the mouse - its too wide.

the new mini wired one beats both of them for me, small size plus usb ports.

For the price of a 24" iMac + an aluminum MacBook you could get a MacBook Pro and a nice 24" external monitor but I see alot of people have iMacs and MacBooks instead. In fact you could get the LED Cinema Display and a MacBook Pro for $100 more than a iMac and a MacBook or a high end MacBook Pro and 24" dell for less than a iMac + MacBook. And still the MacBook Pro would perform better than the iMac because of the better graphics.

Eh, I have a lot of separate computers, and most of the files on them stay that way...separate. It's not really a need for me to have all my files on every computer I own. Most of the files I have on anything other then my iBook aren't really important.

Why have two computers?

I can think of quite a bit of reason why I like it better.

1) I can have everything I have (movies/music/pictures/Windows partition) on a "master" computer, this requires a great deal of HD space and I do the bulk of my work at home. Then have a "slave" notebook that I only need to keep some of the files on when I need to go to school or work away from home.

It's not hard to keep them in sync either, I was a program called ChronoSync, which will sync any files that have changed / added to each other. So say I go to school and take some notes from class that day. Once I get home, all I have to do is turn on my MBP and connect to it from my iMac over my network, ChronoSync will then see that my MBP is on the network and automatically sync files between the two (over wireless too).

2) I can use the other computer if one is busy. A lot of times i'll be exporting a final cut sequence on my iMac and I really don't want to bother it while it's working. So I can let my iMac work away and do get in some MacRumors browsing without disturbing what ever my iMac is doing.

3) Screen real estate. The MBP/ACD option, your stuck with the built in display (13"/15"/17") + another display up to 30". With a dedicated desktop (specifically my setup) I have the built in 24" iMac display + a 22" dell in portrait mode.

After much trial and error I've concluded that this really is the best set up for me. Though I could see if someone didn't have a lot of data to store and always on the go, then I think the MBP/ACD option would be best.

I have had multiple macs for about 5 years now and it used to be somewhat of a challenge though still possible.

There is a great service out there called Dropbox (www.getdropbox.com) that does a great job of this. It is free for 2GB of storage and $99/year for 50GB of storage. It doesn't provide a solution the music/movie collections most of us have but for documents and everything else it is great. You just set a directory on your machine to sync and it sync it with their servers instantly. They have a web, windows, linux, and Mac client. I have only used the web and mac clients but I love it.

I emailed the developers about their service and asked them how could I use it to sync files between multiple macs.

They replied and said that at the moment they don't have that ability but they said that they are working on a iPhone app that will sync with your dropbox and that they will also try to use that same code to give us the ability to sync between multiple macs as well.

So hopefully they get it working and I can really start using Dropbox.

- Logitech G9 Laser Mouse
- iPhone 2G + Dock
- Apple Remote

- 250GB Iomega Portable HD

Have been using my Bravia is my main monitor for over a year now, and really like it. Although I don't really have any problems with my eyesight I feel like it's less straining for my eyes to see everything this big.

The main reason I have it like this, though, is the fact that I don't really watch that much TV on cable anyway. I would feel it would be a waste of space (my room is not that big) to have a turned off TV just standing there 99% of the time, but on the other hand I do watch a lot of movies and tv-series on my computer. This was the perfect solution :)

WHOA! I can't imagine using my 40" as a monitor!!!
I tested it out a couple times, but it was just way too much for me.
My 20" iMac and 13" Macbook are enough and my 40" TV is strictly for TV purposes.
Nonetheless, nice setup.

Here's mine:

http://img06.picoodle.com/img/img06/3/3/27/artnaz/f_DSC00065m_27933be.jpg

1) Apple Unibody Macbook 2.0GHz, 4GB RAM, 320GB 7200rpm HD
2) Acer H233H Full HD monitor - got it very cheap, and it's very neat)
3) Apple Aluminium Keyboard wired - I don't have much trouble cables, but I do not like batteries and not having numeric keys
4) Logitech MX400 - I wanted it wired (hate changing batteries) and to have forward/backward keys plus horizontal scroll. And I hate the Mighty Mouse.
5) Line6 Toneport UX2 - for recording stuff, playing on the electric, but mostly for the "soundcard function"
6) Sony 5.1 set - My Toneport sends a digital signal by coax to my Sony amp. So I can hear all the system sounds (including my guitar/vocals/synth/whatever) through 5.1.
7) Sennheiser HDR115 - very handy wireless phones. Plus I got old Sony around-ear wired phones.
8) SonyEricsson dock - that thing on the left; for my K850i.
9) Rain Design mStand - expensive, but it's perfect!

What I want:
1) Signal to Toneport is not good, I have to restart my Mac most of the time when I connect the USB. With 10.4.9-10.4.11 it was okay, as with 10.5.2-10.5.4. Hope it will be solved again soon.
2) iPhone 3Gen

couple of guitars, one acoustic, one electric which was custom made... by me.

Here's a quick shot of my setup after I got my 24" iMac today.

The iMac is replacing a Hackintosh (which itself replaced a 20" iMac a little over a year ago), which is currently hooked up to the 20" Dell behind the far MBP; I'm currently pulling my files off of it over the network. Going to take 12+ hours...even with a gigabit network, 700GB is a lot.

The iMac is a refurb 2.8 GHz model. I got it for $1200, then as soon as I got it today I ripped it apart and popped in a Western Digital 1TB drive I bought from NewEgg for $90 and put in 4GB of RAM I got for $25 from Amazon. All in all, a pretty dang nice machine for a little over $1300. I'm quite happy with it so far. Way better than the 20" iMac I used to have.

Attached to the iMac is my Dell 2407wfp; then there's the two MacBook Pros (both belong to work). The closed one in the foreground is my outgoing one, a 2.2 GHz glossy-screen 100GB maxed out with 3GB of RAM. Since I'm buddy-buddy with the IT guy, I got a "stealth upgrade" out of cycle to the newer MBP (the open one), which is a 2.4GHz LED-backlit model with a 160GB drive and 4GB of RAM. I need my 4GB, baby.

Not pictured: the D-Link NAS I also bought this week (will be 1.5TB), my wife's Blackbook, or the Mac Mini attached to the plasma TV running Plex.

http://img06.picoodle.com/img/img06/3/3/27/artnaz/f_DSC00065m_27933be.jpg

How do you like your Acer monitor? I'm torn between that one or the Dell SP2309W. I have been wanting a monitor but I can't seem to figure out from these two the right one.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who uses the chin of my iMac as a Post-It board. I seriously have like eight notes on it by the end of the week. Sunday comes along and I clean and organize everything, by the end of the night there is already one or two on there again!

My PowerBook leaves the desk all the time. It usually makes it to the bed or a sofa. It rarely leaves the house. It used to leave the house every week day and got a full cycle on the battery every week day.

What do you do for work?

Heineken ftw.

Absolutely. I've tried quite a few different beers, but I always come back to Heineken. Right now, I'm drinking Michelob Pale Ale. Figured I'd try it out. While it's good, it's not anywhere close to Heineken.

What are you going to do with the Hackintosh?

Probably sell it on Craigslist (wiped clean, of course). It's a pretty nice machine...a 2.53 (I think?) Core 2 Duo clocked at 2.8 GHz, 4GB of RAM, 400GB main drive, fanless dual-DVI (rare in PC world) Nvidia 7300GS video card, a Gigabyte DS3-R motherboard with more connections than you can possibly ever use, and an Antec Sonata III case that's ultra-quiet.

Rogersmj,

Is that a mx revolution mouse i see in your set up? and the allsop metal art mouse pad? i have the mx revolution and wanted to get the allsop metal art pad as it would match perfectly with my glass desk, etc, but i wasn't sure how the metal art mouse pad handled the mx revolution (a laser mouse). the allsop website talks about using the metal art pad with an optical mouse but i have found no reviews online where they tie in laser mouse with that specific pad. any words would be greatly appreciated!!!!

It's a VX revolution, but yes that's an Allsop metal mouse pad. It's quite old, I've had it for a long time. It works well. The mousing surface itself isn't actually metal--it seems to be more like some kind of ultra-hard plastic. The frame is metal, though. I like the stability of it but it's kind of ruined my desk. It's got one of those rubber non-slip pads underneath that has over time fused bits of itself to the finish on my desk. If you've got a glass desk though that won't be a problem.

My setup at the moment, using my old G4 Mac Mini, all of the media data is on my server though.

The AA Batteries on my keyboard ran out, hence the need to use my wired keyboard at the moment, The picture of inside my knee is because I recently had surgery on it to repair a cartilage repair, lol.

How do you like your Acer monitor? I'm torn between that one or the Dell SP2309W. I have been wanting a monitor but I can't seem to figure out from these two the right one.I'm very happy with it. I found it for €190 = $250 and I think that's one of the cheapest options for a Full HD monitor with DVI. The design is great too, and the touch-buttons are very sleek. Acer is not known for a very good quality, but I can't say anything bad about it. It's build well, nicely finished... Maybe because it's a new model.

Your Dell should be a bit better though regarding the screen quality, and I like the even more minimalistic design. And the resolution is a bit higher.

So choose for yourself if you want to spend a bit more for the Dell. But I can tell you that the Acer is much better than I expected, very pleased with it!

SO Ive noticed a few people have an additional monitor attached to their iMacs - just wondering what connection I need to get to connect an acer monitor to my own iMac - is it the displayport to VGA Adapter?

Also out of interest what do people use their additional monitors for?

@LERsince1991: I love your posters at the wall!

Cheers man :P
Do you mean the painting of the dancers or the wall plastered with photos?

A2 Product Design? Nice, I'm taking the same course, I was going to make a desk too, but decided instead to build a bass instead.

I read through the desk build thread, nice! Considering how seriously you take design, I take it you are going to uni for design? Where abouts?

Cheers, cool, A2 product design is the best :P
Theres one thing building a bass but you didn't design it? ...
Did you buy a kit or work all the wood yourself? Thing is I don't know where you can get marks for just 'building' something, not designing it and no innovation. Don't want to put you down btw, I'm just curious.

Yup, I'm going to uni to study architecture because its the most challenging design course availiable. At the moment it looks as though I may be going to Nottingham Trent but I haven't accepted anything yet. What about you?

I need to get myself a dslr but I probs can't afford it unless I get a scholarship that I've applied to. Up to £10500 a year :P fingers crossed, I think I have to do soem presentations to some companies that may decide to sponsor me... I'm not good at presentations.

Personally, when using design programs like CS4 or Sketchup or hypershot, its good to have a second monitor to layout all the palettes and toolbars, makes one screen free for fully seeing what your doing without being covered in windows and pallettes.

Also really good to have it when doing most stuff, say have itunes open on one and your web browser on the other. Doing work? Have the biggest resouce ever on your left (internet) and word (or whatever you want) on your other. Its well useful for everything really.

When I'm doing web design I need a lot of stuff laid out and visible at once -- the code, the mockup, and the site itself. Having space for a movie to be playing is nice too :)

If your Acer monitor has DVI (most LCDs made in the last few years do), go with the mini DisplayPort -> DVI adapter (assuming you have the newest iMac; if not get the mini DVI -> DVI adapter, which is what I use). Always use DVI if it's available rather than VGA.
