I just got a wireless Mighty Mouse, and despite the complaints on this forum I personally think it's a great mouse. The only thing is that I'm not too keen on constantly turning it on and off and then having to go into the bluetooth menu to re-sync the mouse.
I had an old wireless mouse that I never turned off and it ran fine. Is this the same of the mighty mouse? If I leave it on and connected to the computer but completely unattended, or if I close the lid of my MacBook without shutting off the mouse, will I still only have to change batteries like once a month or so? Or will that suck the life out of the batteries?

I have the mighty mouse and leave it on all the time... I change the battery probably once every 2 months or so... Have no issues. When you open your lid just move the mouse and click the button a couple of times to get it to reconnect to bluetooth.

Yep, I leave both of mine on all of the time with no issues.

It works great out of the box, give it some time for it to show its true colors ;)
I leave mine on all the time.

leave it on. Its a great mouse. I got mine a month ago. I've used it everyday since; about 4 hours per day and its only at 92% battery life. No need to turn it off.

I never turn it off. Batteries last a lot.

I have a different brand bluetooth mouse, and I leave it on all the time and change batteries no more than once a year.

Under the mouse where the "invisible" laser is sprung to life is a small switch-like lid for the laser mirror. push the lid like you would a slider phone, towards the green light and voila. its off
