Please only intelligent replys, would like to know what made you purchase a macbook and why? Was it the features? the exclusiveness of owning a mac? crashed pc? etc...

To name a few...

Windows was becoming horrible. XP was the only fast OS, and it was ages old. And it still wasn't stable. My laptop was a creaky, hot, noisy, flimy plastic HP laptop, and after seeing the Mac OS, and its beautiful build, I HAD to.

SO please.

Why did i purchase a macbook?, Because I got sick and tired of replacing my data every six months, due to some type of malware, or virus that crept in

Having been a Microshaft user for years, done and tried everything there is to do with a Windows setup, I thought I'd try a Mac after being an iPhone user for the last year and was impressed with the stability of the OS running the iPhone.

Bought my 1st Macbook just a week ago and am still on the learning curve of how to move things around and get it running the way I want it to, but its an amazingly forgiving OS and thankfully I've had no major problems (yet)

I have used Windows for my whole life. Then I was on vacation at some relatives house in Chicago for a month. They only had a mac around. So I did my daily work there (checking my email, uploading my blog, sending photos etc. and I just figured it out how to use it and I really liked the design (of the hard and software). That was pretty much the point where I knew that my next Computer will be a Mac.

But I sticked to my XP machine until its motherboard broke. That was the moment where I justified to buy me something new. And the fact that I would start college half a year later, meant that it should be a notebook.

I love my MacBook, it's small and light enough (though I would love a netbook for travelling..will buy one when I *need* one) to carry it all day at college. It has good specs and just looks awesome. OS X all the way. I am so much happier than with my old PC's.

I also have 2 iPods which just work as they should. And I love them too. (I first seen an iPod in 2003 at a friends house, I played around with it for a minute and I fell for the design. A few days later I bought one, no matter what it costs (was pretty pricey back then!))

The MacBook is my only and primary Computer. There's nothing it can't do, except gaming (I use my brother's machine for that)

i got the black one in my sig because my ibook g4 was slowly eating my soul (i had to use a windows computer when it started to get really bad:eek:). Then I got the alu because my laptop my is the only computer i use and the graphics on the blackbook were less than ideal for what i wanted to do with it (still a great computer though).

In short, I bought my MacBook because my iBook G4 was on its last legs and I was due for a new computer anyway. I chose the MacBook over other Apple systems because of a combination of features and portability. I haven't used a PC since 2002 (when I was seduced by the G4 iMac...you know, the one with the round base and flat panel screen on the metal neck and then was floored by OS X) and I have no intentions of going back.

The multitouch trackpad really sold me. Without it, I would have chosen an iMac. Now I can't imagine life without it.

I still don't like laptops, but the Macbook is the best of the best. The unibody enclosure is astounding. It's so solid and inspiring. And, of course, it really means something that the entire thing is 100% recyclable.

The portability is wonderful, and it has the power to do all that I need it to do professionally.

Plus the fact that a Mac just works.

My noisy, hot, sluggish, faulty DVD burner, out of date windows laptop had only just finished its 2 year warrantee. It then decided to stop working completely.

New macbook is almost silent, much faster, can run OS X and Windows without any hassle, more solidly built, smaller form factor, comes bundled with software I actually use, does not require 'always-on' antivirus. I can't be bothered listing more.

I had an imac before and although it was great i needed the portability of a laptop. Sold the imac and dropped a massive £500 on top to get the absolute top spec Macbook.

With this kind of spec i think it does knock down the macbook air's uniqueness as the macbook is just as thin let still packs a disc drive

I absolutely love it. It copes with anything i throw at it and i'm just getting into video editing. I've even got XP installed in bootcamp although i NEVR use it.

Got myself ilife 09 today too and it just makes things even better. I never though i would be able to make websites or edit video footage.

I plan to expand eventually by getting an ipod touch. I want an iphone but i never call people. I email and facebook everyone, so there's no need for the phone part

I switched because I couldn't tolerate windows either... I have been using windows for years before finally bought a low-end aluminum Macbook just a week after its release.

I did not regret it and I will not switch back to windows. Strangely enough there are some websites that wants me to use internet explorer (I uses firefox and safari). When I really need to use those, I just opened my legal XP copy in my virtual machine without affecting the stability of all other programs!

I could literally open so many programs at once with my Macbook! I always have iTunes, iPhoto, Firefox, Finder, Preview, VLC, Text Edit, occasionally terminal and some other of my stuff. I love my Macbook! My best laptop ever. It's not as perfect as in the ad, but it's a LOT better than any of my other windows machine!

I needed a new computer and got sick of Windows. My wife had Vista for just over a year and had nothing but problems. After seeing all the problems she was having I really didn't want that, so I had money saved up so I got a Mac. My wife saw how smooth everything was going with my Whitebook and wasn't too happy. The new Macbooks we're coming out and I had mine for about 2-3 months and I wanted the Aluminum one. So I jokingly said to my wife "How about I get the new Aluminum Macbook and you can have my whitebook" and she said "OK!" (I wasn't expecting that at all).
So I looked at the Aluminum for a few days and my wife yelled at me to just buy it already so she can have my whitebook. We both been happy ever since.

I switched because using windows makes me feel like I am in 1995 again. As much as I loved the 90s I figured windows would have evolved a little bit since then. If I have to use my gf's dell I feel like I am using a toy. Although if I ever feel like going back in time all I have to do is open up that baby and I'm back in the 90s for as long as I want.

Then again on the Macbook it isn't that hard to upgrade the hard drive and RAM at least.

No Registry!

That's what always got me on the PCs, every couple of years or so the machine would just crap out. No more of that, it was my biggest reason for switching.

I got a 2.4 MB because I didn't need the size and extra video power of the 2.4 MBP. And portability, I needed that.

My family has a PC that is a couple years old and my dad has a hp notebook and i watched in 2 years them going from awesome machines to a super slow piece of junk. The macbook lifespan is way longer than a PC so its was a good investment for college and i wanted something that couldnt get a virus and something that wouldnt crash in the middle of typing a 10 page paper that i forgot to save, true story. I hate PCs and will never buy anything but an apple product. Im trying to convince my parents to buy a mac mini but the value is kinda low right now so after the next refresh i hope to get one.

Also, i wanted a machine i can be proud of. when i work on my macbook in a library or coffee shop between classes i can be proud to pull out my macbook. If i had a dell i would hide in a closet.

I decided to purchase the MB because I was tired of Windows. I wanted to try something new and I thought that Macs were also great computers. I also bought the MB because it's portable. The iMac was one of my options, but I decided to get the MB because I don't want to spend my vacation using a Windows laptop. The Operating System is also stable.

I bought one because all of my work apps have run on mac os since circa 1993. The technical specs weren't too bad for the macbook and turned out comparable to anything else so I can dual boot to run arch linux for personal use. I certainly didn't purchase it for the horrible build quality or to escape from one crap OS to another, though.

Well, I've used Apple computers since I was a youngster typing away on an Apple II. Been Mac ever since except for 1 laptop that was given to me as a second machine that was the proverbial PC POS.

What keeps me on Macs? The same thing that always has- I've always felt that Apple combines the best OS in the world with their own, high quality hardware. The user experience can't be beat- simple and powerful personified.

Previously the now wife and I had a G4 1ghz 12" Powerbook. After its years of use and its minor issues, it was one of the greatest laptops you could have. After we got married, we decided to go for a nice upgraded. Also I much prefer the OSX for home use because I sit on Windows machines for 9 hours a day. When I compute at home, I want change.

Before this week, I last used a mac in the 5th grade, about 23-24 years ago. Playing some Oregon Trail :D

Based on my experience so far, I don't think I'll be going back to a Windows machine for home use any time soon.

For me it was because I was just tired of Windows and how I was constantly "fighting" with it to work on it. I mean a Windows machine it can still surf the web, copy DVDs, download music etc... but the overall finish just isn't there. That's why I really like all the neat little features in OS X and the MacBook itself. I can browse the internet using three fingers to do everything from scrolling, switching tabs, copy/paste, and back/forward... It's stupid easy to use lol and I don't even have to lift my wrist. Plus the overall finish on the aluminum MacBook is ten times sleeker and sexier than any other PC on the market. Out of everything I would say that OS X was the biggest reason why I bought a MacBook.

The list gets bigger and bigger everyday of all the things that Mac has on Windows...

I was going to buy my first portable computer ever, and I needed it for schoolwork.

I wanted something which was easy to use, and I wanted to try out something new, and in my case, more exotic than Windows was. I also wanted a design that was slim, robust and problemfree. This is why I gladly payed extra for the aluminum MacBook, instead of buying a standard laptop.

Keypoint was the easy way to use it. It's much easier to organize documents on the MacBook. Same goes for pictures, videos, and even programs. It's also a more effecient system. Have you ever experienced Windows just taking "naps". Like it using a hell of a long time to just open a normal document? The Mac never does this, it's always sharp.

It is also a better tool for school. The callendar function is awesome, and helps me organize deadlines in one place, tying them up with documents and links

You could say I could just download a thirdparty callendar for Windows, but I don't want to do this. The OSX is a complete package of everything I need. The programs that OSX features are professional and easy to use programs, unlike Windows. Like I don't need to download Final Cut or Premiere on a Mac when I have iMovie. But on a Windows you need these programs, cause Movie Maker is just crap.

Windows is spreading everywhere in my country
And it has many problems

After I bought the Aluminum MacBook  on wednesday Feb 4 09, I fall in love with it
And my wife is jalousie!

I told my friends: Windows is coming without any software and any tremendous features with it.. so, it is like a naked guy!

But the mac .. Powerful!

The only problem in my country is the banks websites..

They require internet explorer  imagine that!

Since the original iMac g3 ive always had my eyes on macs but could never make the move, after seeing people's macbook/dual monitor setups I thought to my self "that's executive as hell". Then looking into the OS more I decided that a macbook would work as a desktop and laptop for college in the fall and work flawlessly. :)

So I guess It'd be ranked by most needed to least ::
1. OS change [[PCs on their last legs, hard drive failure and defragging]]
2. Flexibility [[desktop with keyboard, mouse and external monitor]]
3. Executive Look [[apples are damned sexy]]
4. OSX and Windows on a virtual machine [[best of both worlds]]

only con is price in my eyes [[and 300$ difference if you want backlit keyboard]]

1. I had a little experience with iBooks and really liked working with them and really enjoyed OS X.

2. After doing some price comparisons with Dell, with whom I was very close to ordering myself an Inspiron with my wife who was doing the same, I saw that Apple machines are not really priced that much higher, there is no true "low-end" model.

3. I was tired of my desktops slowing down considerably after being just one-year-old. After seeing that I really could afford a Mac (the Dell I BTO-ed was just a few hundred less than the MacBook) and knowing that the iBooks were several years old and worked like new, it sealed the deal.

I actually switched from a Santa Rosa MBP to a 2.4 Unibody Macbook last week.

I was going to go for a previous gen 2.5Ghz MBP (non-unibody), however after trying out the Macbook at the Apple store, it was clear to see that the unibody design and multi-touch trackpad were game-changers.

These are the most beautifully designed and engineered laptops ever and are a joy to use. There is really nothing else that comes close.... and even if it did in external build... nothing can replace OS X.

As other's have mentioned, you are not fighting the operating system.. and this is important as it something you use every day, normally for hours on end.

I was a PC guy for years, but saw the light about 4 years ago.. :)

MacBooks are extremely portable. I am taking mine around at least 2 days a week and I have a pretty large Targus bag because I have other things I need to take with me. No complaints at all. While I think it would be smart for Apple to make an 11" laptop, I'm confused by those on here that think MacBooks are too large or bulky. I just have a completely different point of view I guess.

I take it everyday to college. It's sitting in my backback, next to the books and papers.

But for travelling purposes, I would definitely buy a netbook, it's smaller and lighter. But that might doesn't matter, depending on your way of travelling (I like it as light as possible)

The reason I got a MacBook Pro was for the features. I had been a user of Windows for years but hated the usability of it. After using an iPod for 3 years and looking around on Apple.com I decided that Leopard, and Macs for the matter, were far better than Windows or the computers it comes on. I got fed up of the lack of multimedia applications on Linux. Kino was a fairly decent video editor, but it took a hell of a lot of work to get it going, even on Ubuntu. There was NO dvd authoring application I could get to work, never mind anything as simple to use as iDVD. There were quite a few alternatives to iPhoto, but all of them lacked something the other had and the choice of applications worked against me as I was forever changing and losing the metadata I had worked hard to maintain.

I had been using Linux for about eight years, and things were becoming harder, not simpler. My main desktop PC was old enough that I couldn't upgrade a single item in there without basically buying a new machine. I had persuaded my mum to buy an iBook a few years back as I wasn't prepared to support a Linux laptop for her and Windows was totally out of the question. Based on the experience I had with that, the cheapness of a Mac Mini, iLife and oddly enough Quicksilver (which is a HUGE part of the Mac experience for me) I decided to bite the bullet. Well about six months later I had already bought a MacBook as well =]

Hm.. I went the Mac route because I've been using windows for a long while and I am so totally done with it. My previous laptop managed to ruin my mood most of the time. I use my laptop alot, and it's really annoying having to struggle with a slow OS (XP) and slow programs and both manage to crash up on you all the time. I maintained that Dull laptop quite well and it still didn't fit my needs anymore.

My brother purchased a MacBook (white older version) somewhere last year and the times he visited he always was quite delirious about it, so I asked him to take it with him about two weeks ago. I was already in love with the design before that. Well after having played with it for about 2 minutes, I already made up my mind and decided to sell off my Dull and get a MacBook. I originally wanted to go with the new nVidia White MacBook, but decided that I use my laptop enough to justify the additional €250 for the unibody.

I've got it for just over a week now and I'm totally digging it. Everything works just SO much faster and smoother. Of course it isn't perfect (it's close though ;-P) but it just works. Even though the specs might be a bit worse compared to windows systems, the superior design is enough reason for me to cope with it. (oh yeah and Os X aswell of course).

Having a super slick notebook, which is really fast, which comes with working software (osx/ilife) out of the box, doesn't make any noise, never gets really hot is more than enough reason to justify the additional expenses.

I grew up in a Mac house during the 90s, and Windows was actually the unfamiliar OS for me. My first computer was a Dell laptop which I still use and works great, but when I started looking at a new laptop, moving back to macs was a pretty easy choice to me; especially because I bought that laptop 4 months before the x86 announcement, and I honestly trusted a macbook to be able to virtualize Windows 7 as well as a new Dell I'd have bought at the same time.

How/Where do you check to see if your workstation is certified for Unix?
Excellent machine for Unix/Linux (I'm beginning to see both as equal in capabilities - but considering your using a Sun OS Unix I'm curious what on earth for work you use your MacBook for? Are you the only one at your work that uses a Mac?

I'm buying a MacBook Unibody this Spring. MBP possibly for Xmas unless OT kicks in bigtyme then I'll go MBP all the way and iMac for the home as this 6yr old Dell is on its last breathe.

I plan to expand eventually by getting an ipod touch. I want an iphone but i never call people. I email and facebook everyone, so there's no need for the phone part

Use VoIP app like TruPhone for free VOIP calls to other iphone/ipod touch users & to other Nokia S60 users ;) Issue taken care of! Or another VOIP app for Vonage or like VoIP service that allows you to roam on WLAN networks. There is your phone! :apple:

Cause everyone i knew also ranted and raved about how amazing they were. And when i got it i realized it's not all it's cracked up to be. But other than some compatibility issues i love it!

I purchased a MacBook because I wanted my own portable computer with everything I need on it. I also brought it because, at the time, OSX Leopard was released, and I had always liked OSX's simple and easy to use interface with little or no crashes. Plus, I was getting sick of Windows too.

my friend had one of those White plasc. MacBooks and let me use it and I wanted one from that day on. I was going to buy an iMac I saved up for about a year but then the Alu. MacBooks came out and I got that instead. :P

I'm primarily a PC user, but I wanted a Mac so that I could test my web pages (I'm a web designer) on a Mac and I also wanted to get into iMovie. I didn't really feel I needed the power of Pro so I went for the white 2.0 ghz version. Plus I like having options and the Macs are unique and fun to play with. And I've got a shuffle and iPhone so I might start doing some programming on Apps as well. Add it all up and it's more like why didn't I have one.

I got a macbook in 2007 and it was my first mac. I love it in every way. No crashes, delayed responses, pop ups (unlike windows yes or no?) and yes... it's exclusiveness. I love exclusive products. It is currently not my primary computer as I have a 3 year old dell for school but it is getting slow and had viruses in the past.

Portability, light weight, great for me as a college student, got me the hell out of Windows.

Life span of Mac ca go for 6+ years. Need I say more?

I had a 17 inch Powerbook before. Last year i moved to Finland, and when you have to go to university every day through the forest, crossing a frozen lake and with snow all around you realize its not a great idea to have a 17 inch laptop...
I love my macbook, only thing i miss about the powerbook is the screen.

My old windows desktop was aging, slow and very buggy and crash prone, so I needed an upgrade to something newer.

I like the laptop format, and wanted a more portable option for when I am away and so on.

I was happy enough with windows, but have multiple friends who are mac users who all recommended it - stable, better designed and much more user friendly so I decided to give it a shot and see what the fuss was all about.

Lastly they do seem very well put together - obviously designed as a while not a collection of parts, so while a bit more expensive than a comparably specced pc, a much nicer machine in person.

So I ended up with a macbook...

Mac OS X Leopard is certified Unix.

Wanted a Computer of my own, Father had MacBook Pro
I wanted to do virtual school online
I am a guitarist so I wanted to start recording things (with ease)

So in mid 2007 (July 2nd was the exact day it arrived) I got my Black MacBook with Tiger. For the most part it has served me well, but Apple Protection Plan has saved me over $1100.00 so far with this computer, Corrupt internal software, replaced hard drive, failed cooling system causing laptop to over heat and freeze up.

For the past 3-4 months it has been working flawlessly and I can now appreciate the true greatness of my Macintosh Computer.

I am thinking about actually saving up and upgrading to a 15 inch MacBook Pro though, because my current MacBook is *useable* but I do all my school work on it, plus photography with my Canon Rebel XSi, plus tons of audio recording and editing. So I believe I would be better off with something that has more power and a bigger screen for editing photos.

To replace the pretty POS that is the Air. Although grossly overweight, at least it's a pretty POS with a replaceable battery.

I bought a MacBook because using Windows was becoming untenable. I dislike the regular tech maintenance that Windows seems to require. Being that most/all windows programs can run in windows emulated environments on the Mac system, I saw no reason to continue being a Windows holdout.

Additionally, my previous laptop was a 17" HP. I bought a MacBook for the smaller form factor. Overall, I am very pleased.

Hey all, first post here :)

After a little over 20 years of working exclusively on PCs and subscribing to all the uninformed prejudices against Apple computers (i.e., "how the hell can you work effectively with ONE MOUSE BUTTON?!?!"), some coworkers of mine started dabbling in Macs and I couldn't help but notice what powerful and elegant machines they've become.

My primary computer (a Compaq laptop) was about 4 years old, freaking ancient in computer years, and my relationship with it had become adversarial. After witnessing the absolute wizardry my coworkers were performing on their MacBooks and despite my fear of leaving the familiar world of Windows operating systems, I decided to pull the trigger.

My MacBook arrived about a month ago, and to my delight I already feel like a power user. The learning curve was incredibly steep, thanks to the insightful and coherent design of both the operating system and the hardware. Here was a computer I was working with, not against.

If my last computer managed to last me four years, then I certainly expect this one to last me another four, and that's really saying something in this era of exponential technological advancement.

Also, i wanted a machine i can be proud of. when i work on my macbook in a library or coffee shop between classes i can be proud to pull out my macbook. If i had a dell i would hide in a closet.

I do pray that you don't buy a product or OS to "feel" or "BE" proud of! If you didn't in anyway contribute to the design, production, marketing decisions, or influenced an idea to fruition then you shouldn't be proud of it at all. Your other reasons for owning it I can relate to fully. But pride? Sorry I'm proud I'm not a statistic - a drug dealer, killer, pimp. I'm proud I went to college and my father didn't. I'm proud for having my kids 1-2yrs later than my dad & mom had me. 'm proud that my son was more than just a spark in my eye or the wild spunk I let out. I wanted to have a child because the woman I fell in love with was a loving, caring, and believing-in-her-child mother that I could see nobody else to be the mother of my kids. 1 child of ours is hers before she met me but I've helped to raise her day in and day out for most of her 14yrs (11 exactly). I'm proud my son is a GOOD kid that loves to have fun and tries so hard not to emulate the misguided youth in our 'hood. Sure he gets in trouble for loosing his temper when overly teased - but so did I. I'm proud of my son for trying to be better than I am without even knowing it. I'm proud to see him in the morning walking up and when we send him to bed and tuck him in. I'm proud that he loves his sister, mother, me, and his cousins (2 girls) younger than him which if ever they where alone he'd feed them before himself (he's 10, their 5 & 2 1/2). If a stranger even looked at them wrong he'd kick you in the balls! HARD - he's 99lbs solid at 10.

And I'm proud to have experienced all that life has given me and to have experienced OS X. I'm proud of the efforts of Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and other greats that worked to improve Apple in earnest the pioneers to those pushing hard to continue to develop great products. But I'm not proud to own a product - although it makes me happy that I dont' have to stress - constantly running virus scanner, defrag HDD & registry (via Booster), rollback to "last known good configuration" - funny the wording on that when even then issues still remain. Good is not good enough; I want GREAT configuration - so I'm buying a MacBook this Spring.

Please only intelligent replys, would like to know what made you purchase a macbook and why? Was it the features? the exclusiveness of owning a mac? crashed pc? etc...

At first I was going to give a sarcastic reply, but after reading some of the posts, I got to thinking. I have a MBA, not a Macbook, but still...

#1. Vista. it whacked my drivers. I had to downgrade to XP
#2. maleware
#3. I had to do a clean os install ~ every 6 months to keep the machine running well
#4. crashes
#5. things didn't "just work"
#6. I got tired of tinkering with the OS. I got over the need to be macho
#7. An Apple Store opened across the street from my office and I was wowed by the design and quality of the hardware and software.
#8. I get awesome personal attention to any and all questons/problems that I have encountered. They make me feel important to them. I haven't had many problems either.
Those are the most important reasons to me, but I am sure if I thought some more, I could bore you with a long list. I think if you will love the aesthetics and functionality of the Mac software, and you won't miss MS.

Prom1 :) just read your post and couldn't agree more. Sometime it's easy to forget that the things we have are only material, Why feel proud? When we should be thankful.

Now to the topic at hand, As a college student, I'm in a dire need of a laptop I've been torn between getting a Macbook and a PC (Hp/Dell). Mostly due to the price difference. However, after hearing three lengthy rants from friends who have Hp Laptops, and the misery they're in right now. Macbook all the way!! Why should anyone be dealing with a faulty lcd screen, over heating to the point of melting furniture and a firework show coming from the power brick.
Even though it sounds outlandish, coming from 3 people, who recently bought their laptops, this is something i rather not be dealing with. Im not saying the Mac is perfect but from the people i know who own the Macbook, issues are not the first things you hear from them.

Hopefully, I'll be a new Mac user/owner in a week or so. :)

Because I wanted to do both Video Editing and CS4 portably, theres no Windows Laptop that looked as good, had OS X features or the right cost and portability, hence MacBook. (13.3" = Major bonus over a 15 or 17" as I cart my laptop around quite a lot).

I've always believe that owning a Apple computer is a must for once a life time. Just like having a Ducati and Ferrari. I've always loved the look of white MacBook because i've always feel that Mac should be white. By the way, my car, bike, iphone and iPods are white too. But i was afraid to switch because i will need to learn everything again. One day, my Sony laptop just became sooooo slow and i thought i might as well upgrade. So i bought my first MacBook on late 2007 and i'm still loving it, which is unusual because i usually feel the slowly-ness of a computer after a year.

I decided LONG ago that windows vista wasn't the OS for me. Used Macs a couple of times when I was travelling and fell in love straight away.

Decided to get the new macbooks as soon as they came out to have the privilege of being one of the first people to have one.

Another nice touch is people coming up to me at uni and saying 'can I touch it?'
