Ok so i bought 4gb RAM upgrade for my 20" iMac which currently has 1gb but when I installed the 2 sticks and started up my iMac all I got was a beeping sound. This freaked me out so I tried installing them again with the same results. Then I re-installed my original ram and everything started up fine. Can someone tell me what might be going on and what I can do about it??? Please help!!!!

What kind of RAM did you get? I have the same iMac (I am assuming mid 2007 2.4GHz?) and will be doing an upgrade shortly (I have the RAM on order - this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148201). Now that Macs have gone Intel they are not nearly as picky on RAM

You either:

A: Bought the wrong type of RAM.

or

B: Got a bad Stick of RAM.

Try just putting one of the 2GB sticks in and see what happens and swap them if needed.

i ordered this RAM:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390028807658

I've already contacted the seller and will be returning the RAM unless there is some way that I can make it work.

I will probably order:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148201

That RAM should of worked so it's probably just bad. The one on newegg.com is nice and should definitely work without any hitches.

I read on here that someone had this same problem with several different RAM sticks and I really don't want to get into that vicious circle of ordering then returning them..... If anyone else has had this problem, do you have to do anything special to stop it from happening???

I would never bother with ordering ram from ebay at this point.
there's too much garbage on there and you almost never ever save money by going that route if you simply check around on deal sites you can find amazing deals on the type of ram you need.

Great ram if you don't mind the rebate. CAS4 too, fastest you can put in that iMac. The one you linked to was CAS5.

Here's CAS4 memory w/ no rebate, but more expensive than w/ the rebate of course.

damn... I already bought the other 1. Oh well, I'm sure it will work out great anyways. Thanks for the info though. I might sell it on ebay and buy the other ram you suggested. :D
