View Full Version : Potential Apple Product Update Dates?
MacRumors
Mar 22, 2004, 12:06 AM
Last week, MacRumors received confirmation of impending Dual PowerMac and Display updates (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/03/20040317111449.shtml) in the near future. As stated in the previous report, no date, however, was provided.
Most eyes are fixed on an unconfirmed MacPlus.org report (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/03/20040308095938.shtml) claiming a release on Tuesday, March 23rd.
Many readers have noted that Apple has a number of promotions (Educational, and Memory upgrades) that end on March 27th. This coincides with the end of Apple's 2nd Financial Quarter for 2004... leading some to speculate at March 30rd, should Apple continue in tradition with Tuesday releases. Coincidentally, IBM is holding an event (http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-5176055.html) on March 31st, providing a roadmap for the company's Power processor -- though it's unclear if this will specifically address the PowerPC processor itself.
Finally, Apple themselves will be holding a Event ("Moving Pictures. Moving Sound. Moving the Industry") (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/03/20040310162042.shtml) on April 18th at the NAB conference.

I really wish that along with display updates, they'd update the apple cinema display pamphlets so they'd unfold to the sizes of the displays, I know it is a minute detail, but if I'm going to be spending a lot of money on a display, I want to make sure that it "fits".

Seems to me like the Cold Mountain Sweepstakes drawing date, which was today, could indicate something to do with the PowerMac updates. The entry form page has been redirected for a week or so now, but the original link was at... http://www.apple.com/go/coldmountain/register/
I suspect the drawing will be sometime this week and perhaps coincide with the updates. The grand prize of the sweepstakes is a dual 2 Ghz powermac G5 with flat screen and a trip to Los Angeles to some video editing seminar.

this is a small bump for such a long wait.
I figure after waiting this long, I may as well hold out for the 3.0 dualies later in tthe year. I know this behavior drives Apple crazy, but I don't need a desktop, and this update, if accurate, is very uninspiring.
But who knows what I'll do. One thing is for certain, though, no new PM until they refresh the displays.

I have been wanting to buy a new Power Mac G5 for the past month now. I have no idea how much longer I can really wait!! I don't want to buy anything until the new G5's come out but the waiting is driving me nuts!! I have a G3/266mhz beige tower that really needs to be updated. I am going to wait until March 30th but I have no idea wht I will do if nothing happens by then!! I have a funny suspicion that somehting is right around the corner because Apple changed it's homepage last week to really promote the G5. If I were a betting man I would say something will happen this week.
I doubt the imacs will be updated until later this summer with the G5 chip.

Stop saying depressing things, especially when they make sense...
That would suck, for both me and Apple. Steve, I'm all set to spend $2500. The time of this transaction is entirely up to you.

Reason could be that Apple has stopped production of the G5, which means updates with new product numbers. This code is good news. It generally happens when updates are made, or replacements are made. It also likely means that Apple has started to produce the new G5s, which is also good becasue there won't be a long wait for delivery.

Geeks rejoice and hail me!. (When this comes true) This is my first prediction, so I have never been wrong. March 30th IS the date of the new Power Mac releases, along with the new displays. After the promos and before the big IBM thing on the 31st. (Macrumors lifted that word for word from an earlier post that I had written). Of course everyone will whine and complain that it is not enough then wait for the mythical 3ghz then the 3.5 then the 4.... Then the G6 and G7....Forget the 30" display, There will be a 17" cinema display however, to put consistent aspect ratios across the display line. Also look for a major FinalCut release at NAB along with some server goodies that will blow the AVID out of the water. They do say that they are moving pictures, sound AND THE INDUSTRY.

I've been waiting to buy one since the "updates" were "due" in January.
My prediction: Rumour sites will keep saying "unconfirmed reports say [insert date 1-2 weeks in future]" until they come out. When they do come out, the sites will say "we told you so" but it's not exactly difficult when you keep making predictions every ****ing week now is it?
I predict new G5's some time within the next 50 years. I'm almost guaranteed to be right.
Nobody knows anything.

Actually if someone can confirm that CompUSA is indeed showing those codes on the internal networks this is a strong indicator of an update within two weeks. Everytime CompUSA has had Macs discontinued in their system an update followed within 14 business days.

I am the person that sent the message about the DO1 status to this site. In my message I said that the 1.6's were flaged as D01 as of about a week ago as for the other two models I can not say for sure. I did some checking on compusa's website and indeed the 1.6's are completely out of stock and the duals are in limited quantities to out of stock in all but a few stores that I have checked.. about 50 or so. So from what I can tell things are looking really good for a release some time in the next week or so. I was an apple rep for a compusa in Phoenix about a two years ago and evertime new models would come out We always had at lease 4 or 5 computers we got stuck with once new models came in. Point being just because the 1.8 and 2.0 duals are showing up as in stock does not mean that they are not also DO1. I will try to call my old store today and get the skinny for sure.

I agree. There's a slight chance for this week (I'll be glued to the Apple page the next couple mornings), but my money would be on the 30th too, for all of the above reasons.

croquer.free.fr (mac rumors french web site) has posted again an info supporting (for the second time) that the delay in PMG5 revision is indeed due to a component delivery failure from ATI, basically the graphic card maker can not deliver what it was supposed to....
so there is apparently no hardware problem neither from Apple nor from IBM
only ATI's fault.

Hmm..maybe Apple would be kind enough to give a much-needed update to Keynote. With the new powerpoint coming out in a couple of months Keynote will really be outdated unless they include a heap of new features. It's such a great program, they just need to make it easier do some of the things that take SOOO much workaround-ing to achieve.
Bring on the 40" glow-in-the-dark fire-retardant displays though...yee haw!

Ingram Micro, a big one, has also a real real real low stock of G5's. (ingram Micro Belgium that is..)
To be more accurate:
1.6 G5: 5 for the french/dutch version, 4 for the Spannich french version, that makes 9 and those are there for a while (they can't get rid of it)
1.8 G5 0 models in stock
1.8 duals: 1 model in stock (and again the less taken Spannish/french model)
Dual 2.0: 6 models, in stock (and also here: the less taken spannish/french one)
Normally they would have a lot more. up to 16 to 20 models of each model!
Good sign.. very good sign

Well the latest one apparently is going to be better than the XP one, at least until that one comes out. I am optomistic that it will be attractive to switchers and SOHO users

More a question/idea than anything else, but just pointing out that the memory deal doesn't end in france until May 8th. (and they explicitly list which products can apply) Maybe the 28th thing isn't as important as we all think it is.

I was under the impression that foreign shipments followed a considerable time behind US releases. Anybody know if true?
Also – apple.com has refurbished G5 dual 2.0s for only 2399 with 512RAM. I seem to remember the refurbished dual 2s being more expensive than that. Does anybody remember what Apple was charging for a refurbished a few weeks ago? I’m hoping that Apple is unloading their refurbished models to make room for revision B’s.

Yes, I would like to know that as well. I suppose the products will be launched on the european web-sites, and ready to pre-order.
Hoping the delay on actual shipping in europe is no longer than a month (counting from the announcement on apple.com) :(

don't hold your breath. Apple UK are crap. I ordered on 12th December. Recieved the machine on 20th February.
Had three delay emails. Had about four different due dates given on the website. Towards the end it said 31st Jan, then the last update it reverted back to December! Total crap. Oh, and they charged me twice for something I didn't order.
A pittance of compensation offered, so I sent it back along with the 23" Cinema and the eMac. Just about to get the refund now. What did I do? I drove to my nearest John Lewis and bought the stuff there. 2hours as opposed to 11weeks. I'll only use Apple store now if it's the only place to get things...

I tend to check out the referb list on apple.com frequently and the prices on the refurb G5 hasn't changed in the last few months. The prices on the powerbooks looks like it may have though. I think the 12" combo PB 867Mhz dropped $150 last week. I think it was $1199 and now it is $1049. The 12" superdrive PB was $1399 and now it is $1299. Also the iBook G3 old stock has disappeared and the iBook G4 refurbs have finally showed up. The prices on the iMacs have also dropped but I'm not sure by how much because I wasn't tracking them as hard.

I'm not so sure if this is in fact a good or bad indication of imminent hardware updates by Apple.
Ingram & Techdata are 2 dealers, independent of apple, they sell lots of other products as well. And I simply don't see Apple waiting to announce updates until all these independant dealers have cleared up their stock. It's up to the dealers themself to anticipate on the demand and having enough stock to meet demand, while not being stuck with hundreds of 'old' machines when updates arrive..

I'm certainly looking forward to PowerMac G5 updates, even though I'm not in the market for one right now (I'm not planning on buying another Mac until January 2007). I was originally planning on buying a Rev. B PowerMac G5, until I got tired of waiting and ordered the 17" iMac G4 I have now. I'm very happy with my iMac. It has some hiccups here and there, like a slow response time when woken up from sleep mode. It is certainly fast enough for my needs. My guess is that Apple will be at revision F or G by the time I'm ready (if we're not at the G6 by then).

Why does everyone think that when they order a new machine there is some guy at Apple whose job it is to stop that order and upgrade it to a new machine? When you order a computer expect to receive the model you ordered.
The only time Apple will cancel your order and upgrade it to a newer model is when they can't fulfill your order at all -- in other words, when the old model is out of stock.
For the millionth time: if you need a new Mac now, buy it now. Otherwise, wait until the new ones come out. Don't expect that Apple will look out for you and delay or cancel your order so you can get a faster machine. Apple's job is to sell computers -- especially the computers they have on hand. Your job is to look out for your own best interests.

I'm not expecting Apple to stop or change anything on my order. But, their terms and conditions clearly state I can cancel (at no cost to me) any time BEFORE delivery and within 10 days of delivery (if unopened) at a cost of £40. This covers me for both this Tuesday and next Tuesday. Its a work machine so I don't get a say in when it was ordered etc.

Did you look at the MacPolls today. As the number stands now 70% of responders will own a G5 something or other by the end of 2004. That of course is assuming that Steve's promise of 3 GHz holds true and the highly anticipated G5 powerbook makes it this year. That number is huge I think. I personally already contribute to that and I love my G5!!! The more time I spend on it the more it makes my Dual 1 GHz G4 towers seem antiquated.

Quick question. Can anybody who has bought a mac from any of the big UK Apple resellers (inc Apple Store) tell me whether the date on the invoice is the date the computer was ordered or the date it was shipped? A boring question but important to me non-the-less.

Just one thought: Does anyone know for sure based on what facts Apple decides when a product will be launched once its ready to be launched? If they updated their products according to which products needs an update the most, new revision would be launched in the following order:
1. eMac
2. PB
3. iBook
4. iMac
5. PM
Since we don't know how far IBM has already come with the G5, there is a possibility that other products are updated first. So tomorrow we could see new (G4) PBs and new eMacs.

It just means taht Apple is trying to squeeze all the sales out the 2nd quarter as they can. It also means that they will probably release the new G5s on the 31 so all of the sales will be in 3rd quarter.

It's his workmachine, and he has to decide if it's worth to him, waiting 2 more months, working on his old "more slow" machine.

I agree. If I had just ordered a dual 1.8 GHz machine, for instance, I'd stay away from rumor sites for a while. The current line-up of G5s are great (now that a lot of the bugs have been worked out). The only reason I am waiting for rev. b is because I can. My desktop, though incredibly old, is still functional -- and I have a G4 PB to boot. But if I really needed a desktop, I'd order a G5 and not look back (Never look back. Computers are updated all the time, no reason to lament an upgrade. There is nothing you can do to stop better, faster computers from being introduced.)

I'm happy to hear that you are enjoying your iMac, thats' what is really important. I plan to be patient, not really looking to purchase till the July - September time frame. Then I won't need another till 2008, so by then there should be a G6.

anonymous submission: "G5s are now comming up as D01 at compusa. for those that don't know what this means it is an internal code that is place on a product in the computer system to indicate a product is discontinued"
can anyone confirm?
arn
I work at CompUSA, but I'm off today so I can't confirm the D01 status. I can tell you that we haven't seen any single 1.6 machines in quite a while, we have also been out of dual 2s for about 2 weeks. As of yesterday we had about 7 or 8 dual 1.8s and those were the only machines we were getting regularly in deliveries.

It probably has to do with SEC regulations in terms of giving guidance at their conference calls. At their last call they said that gross margin would stay stable this quarter. If they released products with different margins they could be sued by stockholders for giving false guidance.
I think this points to a price cut on the iMacs.

Looking back at the previous couple rounds of PM updates, shouldn't we have some "solid" information about what to expect from Apple by this time - if the 3/23 date is accurate.
Did I miss this, or are we actually still flailing about in the dark?

I am not Steve Jobs's love child.
I know, I know - we both wear glasses. We both look great in black mock turtlenecks and Gap jeans. We both are charismatic. We both inpire fear and fawning admiration in others. But I am not Steve Jobs's love child.
How can I be so sure without DNA testing, you ask? It's really very simple. Whenever I kicked and screamed and begged and cried and held my breath until I turned blue, those related to me by the everlasting bonds of common kinship would eventually relent and give me the object of my desire. It might have taken days of pleading and whining, but they would always capitulate in the end.
Steve has not. Therefore we are not related. Quod erat demonstrandum.

If anyone shops Amazon check out their G5 and Cinema Display section. All are marked "Lowest Price of the Season" and there is a instant $100 rebate when a monitor and g5 are purchased together. This is the surest sign that we'll see both G5s and the Display's updated within a week or so. The question is to what?

$200 off if you buy the dual 2.0 and the 23-inch display. Also, the base price of each are reduced by about $100 each - all in all, a $400 savings. Not bad, but the whole point is that I'm waiting for the new ones!

Reason could be that Apple has stopped production of the G5, which means updates with new product numbers. This code is good news. It generally happens when updates are made, or replacements are made. It also likely means that Apple has started to produce the new G5s, which is also good becasue there won't be a long wait for delivery.
Arn knows what that means, he meant if anyone else had heard this to be true. Or at least that how I read it.

I too will probably not check macrumors for a little while as i will be playing with my new PM (once i recieve it). Maybe a little Unreal Tourny and a bunch of photoshop and Quark will feed my hunger, if not there is always playing around with iMovie and iPhoto once i get my library updated to the Mac and then i will have to bust out the iTunes folder and start blasting some tunes. All while possibly folding a new concept to me as i have been running a slow PIII laptop and have been maxing it out for the last few months with photoshop work.

Careful with your logic. The critical measure of any speed bump is not the Mhz but rather the PERCENTAGE INCREASE in speed.
Adding 133Mhz to a 667Mhz chip is a 20% boost.
And what do you know -- adding 400Mhz to a 2Ghz chip is also a 20% boost.
Just something to keep in mind...

Perhaps Apple has changed their release day from Tuesday to Wednesday. The new iBooks G4 were released on a Wednesday as well. something to think about:
We now know that the refurb stores in europe are open, when normally they aren't. So they want people to buy some more refurbs. That's no assumption, that's the way it works, that whole refurbs deal thing.
But why would they open the refurbs stores only a couple of hours before they launch new hardware today? I would do that a week in advance, so people have more time to find out about the refurbs... So my thoughts are more shifting to next tuesday.. no matter how hard I wanted it to be today..

in Europe it is 15h03, and Apple store are still up and will remain, BUT, the refurb store whish is normally open only on Wednesday, exceptionally is opened today Tuesday...
WHY??
because it is usually opened from 11h00 till midnight...
and if new products have to be introduced tomorrow, then of course the refurb store should be also closed....do you see what I mean...
new products tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!

Well something's definitely up. This weekend, the refurb store in the US was practically empty, except for some freshly added "G4 Powerbook" updates (the entire line with some extras to boot) on friday.
Now, practically the entire Apple line is available in refurb form, and for MUCH cheaper. With an education discount I can get a dual G5 1.8 standard for $2k.
Who cares about updates with prices this low? ;D

I think that all the resellers read MacRumors and have started to panic, thinking that new G5's are just around the corner. The March 27th deadline has just fueled the panic. So this is all self-perpetuating.
In reality, MS just bought Apple and they're trying to get rid of all the extra stock before OS X is used only to run Xbox 2.

That's because we're all frantically selling our old, antiquidated 6-month-old G5's to get one of the new ones! :)
Seriously, though, it doesn't mean new ones are coming - it means people think new ones are coming. They might be right, who knows?

I don't think it's gonna happen today. The apple site still promotes the current G5 models. It seems unlikely to me that they would still be promoting the old machines on the same day they gonna introduce the new ones. I think before we will see the Rev B's the apple site will first promote something different for at least a few days before the introduction and promotion of the new machines.

Have to disagree with ya there. You promote what you have until it changes OFFICIALLY. The minute you stop promoting or advertising your product (especially when it comes to Apple), people stop buying, anticipating the next big thing, and sales fall. Just an opinion.

It's not that unlikely. Like I said before, iBooks G4 were released on a Wednesday (October 22). So there is no reason why Apple wouldn't do it again. My guess is new PBs tomorrow, PMs next Tuesday.

You guys need to pay attention to the site. The ad on the home page describes the G5 in a generic sense. It doesn't say anything about rev A, 2.0Ghz, etc. This ad could just as easily describe a 1.6 Ghz machine as a 3.0 Ghz one.

Excellent point! Most of those sytems are only a few months old, and they're still quite good. If enough panic-sellers bring the refurb prices down low enough, you'll be able to get a much better deal on a 4-month-old G5 than on a 10% faster new one.
Sort of like what happened when all the car makers offered 0% financing here in the states - very good used cars became very cheap because there were so many of them.

I completely agree. That announcement built up a lot of expectation that Apple could compete in the hardware field again -- that maybe working with IBM would change things.
I guarantee you that whatever is announced in the next few weeks, there will be a lot of disappointed people who thought something "better", whatever that is, would be coming. The only way Apple could blow us away would be to announce 3.0GHz G5s in the next few weeks -- and that ain't gonna happen folks.

Exactly. There's no idea what the update is going to be, when that line's going to ship, or what the price point is going to be. If it's a straight-up replacement, then a dual 1.8 for $500 less than, say, a dual 2.2 is a significant savings without a lot of noticeable increase. Any dual G5 is going to feel snappier with OS and program updates rather than simply upping the chip a few notches.
I'd say if you're waiting for a mac but don't really need the extra power, those refurbs are the way to go. I'm eyeballing them myself (and my wallet would thank me ;D )

Sadly, the only way they could blow us away truly would be to announce something better than what they've already announced - i.e., over 3GHz. It's sad that even a 3GHz announcement would simply meet the current expectations of half of the members here ("when's the 3Ghz coming out?").
Of course, that said, even a 2.4+GHz announcement would be nice. But I'd rather they announce something you can buy relatively soon than, as they seem to be doing a lot of lately, announce something, then ship it months later. Who cares if they announce a dual 2.4 if you can't get it until June? It'll just make people who have to buy now upset and people who don't have to buy now sad that they have to wait another season.

On the bright side, perhaps they're trying to announce closer to the actual ship date, hence the delayed announcement which will just allow people to get their newly-announced systems shortly after they're announced, instead of spending another three months waiting, and then wondering what's going to be announced a week after they buy.
Or maybe the new products are so delayed that even Apple feels bad about announcing them this early.

Reason could be that Apple has stopped production of the G5, which means updates with new product numbers. This code is good news. It generally happens when updates are made, or replacements are made. It also likely means that Apple has started to produce the new G5s, which is also good becasue there won't be a long wait for delivery.
DO1 means one of two things, either Apple doesn't have enough to ship Comp for a while (unlikely in this event), or production has stopped. The problem is that they usually wait a month er so to flush out the system of old product. That would not be fun.

OK all you Macrumor experts out there, I have a question. Let's assume, for a moment, that Apple does not release G5 updates on the 30th. My question, how often does a quarter go by where there isn't any consumer computer introductions?
I found it amazing that Apple would let the 20th Anniversary of the Mac go by without an exciting new product. Now they are only one week away from letting an entire quarter slip. Maybe the big announcement will be that Apple will drop all production of hardware and outsource it to Dell?
(I'm still betting on the 30th -- but I am not as confident as I was back in late January.)

I think they would just laugh at me... but whatever
Such a price difference is certainly not winning over any new customers thats for sure and with Apple's current market share I'm not sure they can afford that.
Then maybe the Mac is not for them, and that's OK. I also think that macs are slightly overpriced but then again, I have no background in sales and marketing. I am willing to pay the Apple premium to get the Apple experience. Are you? Are they? To make an enlightened decision, they should try playing on a mac for a few hours/day. And what kinds of friends would laugh at you for having a different opinion. :D

This seems like the most likely reason to say they are "almost here." :D

Should I compare the single 1.8 GHz g5 then? It gets spanked by the 3.4 GHz P4 and is still $1200 more for the same config.
Seriously what do I say to a PC user that brings this up to me?
$1200 is a lot of money.
Apple needs to do something about its price / performance.
Hardware only, true. But..and I know this is overused...you get more and better software - in particular the OS - with a Mac. If you're just into gaming, the PC's a better deal. You get the same basic parts in a Dodge Neon R/T that you do in an Infiniti I35. It's probably even faster and costs half as much. But...the Infiniti is better. Better look and feel. Better drive. But, all in all, the same parts. I'm sure there are better car analogies. Camaro/Boxer? Mitsu Evo/350Z? Whatever...
Compare a Mac to a PC and you get the same thing. The magic of the Mac is in the way it all works together - and in the Unix core, which is excellent if you're even remotely into that stuff. People love their Macs. People use their PCs to run their PC programs. Few people love Windows - it's a means to an end. Lots of people love Mac OS.
But, pound for pound, PCs are cheaper, yes.

After reading the Apple Press Release about the Xserve G5s just shipping, I'm pretty sure that we're not going to see new PMs shipping any time soon.
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2004/mar/23xserve.html
"Single processor 2.0 GHz Xserve G5 servers are available immediately through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com) and Apple Authorized Resellers. The dual processor 2.0 GHz and cluster-optimized dual 2.0 GHz Xserve G5 servers will be available in April through the Apple Store..."
If apple can't provide Dual 2.0 GHz at 90nm, I don't expect them to be able to ship faster G5s any time soon. I guess its possible that they will announce PM 2+GHz at 130nm, but I thought that all of the rumors were pointing to a 90nm process.
I'm afraid I'm leaning towards the next Powermac update being this summer at 3.0GHz.

You simply answer: "Enjoy your Windows. I know I'll be enjoying my OS X."
What about Linux? The point is the price difference is enough to sway people away from the Mac. Honestly, for over $1k you have to be a zealot to go for the Mac.
There's another grad student here who has a $2k budget from her advisor to buy a system. It's pretty damn tough to get a $2k Mac for that (it needs to be able to do some work so the i/eMac is out). For that money we can build a cutting edge (64 bit AMD) PC with lots of RAM and a nice LCD flat panel or we can buy the bottom of the barrel PM G5 and try to find a cheapo 17" monitor and not enough RAM. And in neither case will we be running Windows.

Yes, I second that.
This is an official Press Release from Apple, so we can safely assume that the info is correct and not 'twisted'. A fact is that the single Xserve's ARE shipping, and in them are the new 970Fx processors. So it's safe to say the processor itself is fine, is ready. The processor is the same as in the dual Xserve's right? So that leaves 2 possible reasons for the dual delay.
1 : They don't have the quantity of processors received from ibm to assemble the duals and ship them to the customers.
2 : There are still heat-issues on the dual Xserve, but in this stage, would that be possible? That would be a real problem if that's the case, in this late stage of production. that could imply some modifications to the cooling system, and other internal parts of the dual. So this seems to me as NOT a possibility.
So the only reason is quantity imho.
And if this is true, than the updated PM's (with the same processor but at higher speeds?) will maybe be announced soon, but not shipping until the larger batch of customers received their dual Xserve G5.
That would leave us, potential rev B owners, with a timeframe of shipping PM's at least begin may..
As i read my post again..i think i'm going to cry :(

Hi, im new here. I dont own a mac yet, but I am going to buy a 15" PowerBook soon (and I am very excited). I am a computer science student. I currently use PC's in a mixed windows, linux environment. I think the mac will play very nicely with the other machines. I plan on doing alot of development with it and hopefully some more multimedia things involving dvds.
I am sure most of you have seen/read about the new dual layer DVD burners that are coming out. I was wondering if anyone could make a guess as to when we could see a dual layer dvd burner in a PowerBook/SuperDrive. I am not looking for wild guesses, just for an educated guess based on knowedge of apple release cycles and hardware updates.
I most likely will not be waiting for the dual-layer dvdr's to buy my new powerbook, but I am considering waiting for the rumored 'updates' to come out.

That is a huge problem - at this rate Linux could over-take the Mac as a viable platform for everyday use in a few years. Once Adobe, Macromedia and others, port their apps to Linux it'll be just about over for the Mac other than maybe high end video stuff.
If Apple wishes to remain competitive it needs to position-itself competitively in the marketplace.

Of course. Once Linux has the style, usability, and interface design of OSX, and the gigantic support of hardware and games manufacturers, hell, it's game over.
of course, people have been saying that for years, and there's still fledgling USB support and non-existent firewire support in Linux. And people still have problems getting soundcards running...

I think it'll be a while until they get into a small enough form factor for the PB's. It's not a bad idea to wait for the next updates (if you can wait that long), but things like dual-layer slot-loading DVDs will take a while. Just my 2 cents.

I really wish this was enough to offset the huge price differences. While I agree that there is some inherent value in the G5 hardware quality and experience over a stock HP or Dell system I also believe Apple must do something to be more price competitive. I personally have no desire to see marketshare slip down another percentage point . . . especially when the rest of the company (software, ipods, etcetera) seems to be hitting on all cylinders. I'm willing to pony up the dollars for superior hardware, but I have my own economics to consider.

I think you are close but you left out the systemboard issue. They may have the single processor board in quantity but not the dual.
If that is the case, it would have no bearing on desktop G5's because they use different system boards. I heard there was a problem with ATI that was holding up the new G5's.

At the rate of current product cycles, the first powerbook with a dual layer superdrive will not be until early 2005. My question is, why wait? Get a powerbook now and start learning and enjoying OS X and when the 3rd party drive start showing up this summer, just pick one up and throw it in a firewire enclosure. It will be cheaper than a superdrive in a powerbook anyway and you can build up enough data in the meantime to fill up a 9.4gig dual DVD disk.

Linux has really come a long way in a lot of these areas. For many people it's really a viable alternative to Windows. It really suits my needs personally. I think the area it's probably most lacking is in graphics area which is where a lot of people here need it. USB support is pretty well established. I've had no problems running anything (that's not to say it isn't there). In general soundcards work just fine. Yes there are some quirks, but it's largely the exception.
I'm personally a PC user and if it weren't for the fact that Macs are now running unix, I probably wouldn't be interested in owning one. And honestly, for the desktop price difference there is no way I can justify a Mac, but that's just me. (I'm in the market for a laptop and that I can justify.)

Hey y'all. I've been about to buy a 15" powerbook for some time now (and I mean a loooong some time now). I keep waiting for these rumored updates or price drops. But my original blueberry ibook is coughing and gasping with a very full hard drive, and I don't want to wait too much longer. My needs are not sophisticated - surfing the web, word processing, simple spread sheets and database stuff, downloading music, and eventually basic photoshop. Why a powerbook? I'd like to buy more than I need in hopes that it will last me 5 years. And besides, they're very cool machines. So here's my question:
I want to get a BTO 15" - the 1.25 with a combodrive swapped for the superdrive and my 512 of RAM on one stick. If I order that tomorrow and new pb's come out &/or there's a price drop within two weeks, can I return it for the better or cheaper one - or am I stuck?
Also, any of you have a cannon 900 or 960 printer? If so, do you like it? Which is better?
I'm traveling a bunch in April and May. It would be fabulous to have my new computer with me, but should I hang in there and be patient?
What would you do in my position?

The new G5s coming out are still going to have fans in them, but are suppose to run quieter than current models. Apple is still having problems with leaks in the liquid-cooled models I've heard. Liquid-cooled models are suppose to run silent. :) I sure miss my fanless old iMac DV 500. Silence is golden!

Hi Vashti,
I am in the same boat as you. I was planning on doing the same BTO as you, but I think financially it would make more sense to get a refub 15" 1.25. it will be 600 less, and if you spend 110 for a stick of crucial 512 you will have the exact setup, but roughly 500 less, and have the superdrive (which I don't really need since I have one in my peecee). I think this is what I will do. I plan on using mine in the same way, but I do want to run some games on it, mostly sim city, age of empires, etc...

Vashti -
I, to am waiting for the 15" update. If you buy and the price drops because a new model is released within 10 days, Apple will refund the difference. I asked the same question at my local Apple Store on Saturday.
Oh, and I own the Canon i950 which is the model before the 960 and it's a great printer. it comes with 6 separate ink cartridges, so it's not too expensive to replace ink when just one color runs out.

Thanks, you guys. Kbonnel, I thought about going for the refurb too. But I get the educational discount, which would make my set-up come to 2209, just 200 more than refurb. I thought maybe it was worth it to know that I was the first,no scratches or other problems. Part of me thinks if I'm spending $2000 for a new machine, it should be one that no one has used. Also, someone told me superdrive is definitely slower on burning cd's - something I think I'd do a fair amount of. Do you worry about refurb at all?
David, thanks for your tip too. Could I replace it with newer machine if it was an update or only get difference refunded?

Well, it's always a crapshoot when it comes to ordering a new laptop unless you buy one that started shipping that day. I'm especially concerned that you're looking for a laptop that will last you five years. That is a loooong time. My G3 Lombard PB, which is now roughly 4.5 years old, is wicked slow. It still works, it runs 10.3.3, etc., but it is nearly useless for anything except email, browsing, etc. I realize that's what you're planning on using yours for, so maybe it doesn't matter, but... 5 years is perhaps overly optimistic. Note that if you get a laptop now, it's effectively ~half a year old - they're really as old as their release date.
However, if you're really only going to use yours for what you say you're going to, it's OK to get one now. They're actually quite excellent. The only concern I had was due to your desire to keep it for so long. Yes, the G4 isn't as nice as the G5. But... nobody outside of Apple has a clue as to when there will be a G5 laptop, and, until then, it'll just be a matter of minor speed bumps. And the current crop, near the end of the line, is very well made with lots of nice features. Nice fit and finish, cool things like autobacklit keyboards, etc. It might be six months or more before you could hope to get a G5 laptop. Maybe more. So wait as long as you can, then just buy what's best for you at the time.
Computers will always, always, always be better and faster after you buy one. If you worry too much about that, you'll never get one. If you do buy one and an announcement is made, then, if your order hasn't shipped yet, you can cancel it. If it hasn't been opened yet (like you'll just sit there with it unopened...) then you can return it. If you've opened it, you get a month to return it for a 10% restocking fee, which is still not too bad. So, you're looking at maybe 4-6 weeks between the time you order and the time it becomes very expensive to ditch the laptop. Not too bad.
You will truly enjoy the configuration you've mentioned. If you were thinking of a 12" PB then I'd recommend the 12" iBook which, after the dual-monitor hack, lets you use, obviously, an external monitor and therefore is probably a better deal than the PB. But, the 15" has no real rival in the iBook line.
I own the Canon S900 and have used it for about a year and a half. I really like it. I have no idea if the 960 is a little better, a lot better, or about the same, but the S900 has been good to me. Your mileage may vary.
If I were you, I'd order the laptop. Wait to open it until after the 30th (it likely won't be there until after that anyway). Then have a blast with it unless something much better is announced and shipping. Best of luck!

A friend bought a refurbished 15" and had no problems with it. Of course, if it's only a few hundred more, there's knowing that no one but you has used it, which is sort of nice. And that fact that she didn't have any scratches on hers doesn't mean you won't - and it doesn't mean you will. You just take your chances. I'm sure not all refurbs look the same.
As far as SuperDrive speeds - yeah, they're slower, but they're not slow. If it's too painful, you could always get an external Firewire or USB2 burner for a couple hundred or less. But, really, it isn't that bad unless you burn a LOT of CDs. And it's very nice to be able to backup onto DVDs.

Hey David, I just thought of another question. I'm an actor and I need to print resumes on the back of 8 x 10 picures (like a light cardboard stock). Do you think your printer could do that?

The S900 doesn't have a secondary feed in the back to let you insert stock horizontally - i.e., the printer "bends" it as it prints and there's no way to just print "flat" - so thicker stock won't work. However, photo paper works fine.
The S960 might do a better job....

Don't know if I should read to much into it, but seems like it could be signaling "something"... - no?

Vashti,
I too get the education discount, and I still think, from a dollars and cents mind set, that the refurb is the best way. Esp. when you add taxes to it. I have the same fears about scratches, etc. I guess I will have to decide if spending a couple hunderd more for new will be worth it.
Samuel L Bronkowitz
Thanks, y'all. Pretty cool to have a place to come and ask your questions.

i seem to recall reading somewhere that the aniticipated heat dissipation issues in rack g5 servers would not be unlike those in a g5 PB.
total speculation, but perhaps today's release can be taken as an indication we have moved closer to a g5 pb? of course each day that passes can be taken as an indication that we have moved closer to a g5 pb, but i hope they bring something out soon.
my g3 333 mhz grape imac literally wheezes every time i try to make it do something... not much life left in it now. i want my new powerbook :(
Yes, I second that.

Computers will always, always, always be better and faster after you buy one. If you worry too much about that, you'll never get one. If you do buy one and an announcement is made, then, if your order hasn't shipped yet, you can cancel it. If it hasn't been opened yet (like you'll just sit there with it unopened...) then you can return it. If you've opened it, you get a month to return it for a 10% restocking fee, which is still not too bad. So, you're looking at maybe 4-6 weeks between the time you order and the time it becomes very expensive to ditch the laptop. Not too bad.
Hey JSW, thank you, thank you for all your thoughts! They were really helpful. About the above, if I stick with BTO config I mentioned, can I still return it if it's unopened? Or does that mean no returns?
Thanks again.

The new G5s coming out are still going to have fans in them, but are suppose to run quieter than current models. Apple is still having problems with leaks in the liquid-cooled models I've heard. Liquid-cooled models are suppose to run silent. :) I sure miss my fanless old iMac DV 500. Silence is golden!
listen water cooling is NOT SILENT yes with cooligy thre pump is silent but how do you expect to cool the water magic? it works like this water has a better conduction rate than air so heat can be moved away quickly and cooled in a more conveniant place and water cooling almost never leaks on screen savers theve hooked up alot of water cooled systems and they said none have leaked even though they said they hooked up the 1 in the worst way possible

I'd confirm with Apple - ask when ordering, or call customer service - but I think any unopened order can be returned for a full refund. Anyone else know?

I'd also find out about the refurb return policy - that might strongly argue in favor of - or against - a refurb, depending on the policy (i.e., if you get 30 days to return a refurb with no penalty, great, but if there's no grace period at all, then that's bad...).

Vashti -
I tried some pretty heavy glossy photo paper in my i950 and it printed fine. I'm not sure how heavy the stock is you're referrring to, but maybe take it to an Apple Store or CompUSA and try in on one of their demo models.
And JSW is right about the 10 percent restocking fee if the stock unit box is opened, but I always understood that all BTO orders were not returnable. I even thought this applied to memory configs that are BTO. Of course, I may have misunderstood, so if anyone out there can clear this up, post away!

General consensus at AppleInsider is that it's crap. I'd have to agree. Too much too soon.

Wish this were true...if the price point stays the same this would be a hell of a machine.
Secondly the new imacs will have a big overhaul in looks (complete redesign)

and the new screens 18 inch and 23 inch will have a choice of 1.6 g5 (19inch) and 2ghz (23)
So a cheap entry level on old tech.
Again, if this were true, I think it would be a strong march in the right direction but why a 18 or was that 19 (best to get your facts straight, especially if your lying) and 23" (that would be very expensive and again in 2-3 years your stuck with a great lcd on average to crap hardware...)
new screens have been developed and are being made ready for shipment
sizes 18 inch 24 inch and huthum........... 30 inches
Why drop 17 for 18...? and 23 for 24?? and 30"??? I find this very hard to believe...this whole reference/source sounds dodgy.
and last but not least the powermacs

Again seems about right but I have serious doubts about this source.

I was, not surprisingly, wrong. You cannot return BTO systems.
Note: can you only get SuperDrive 15" systems as BTO? If you can get a stock 15" with superdrive and all you're losing is that you get 2 sticks instead of one, no big deal - go with the stock one.
From Apple's web site:
RETURN & REFUND POLICY
If you are not satisfied with your Apple purchase of a pre-built product, please call 1-800-676-2775 for a Return Material Authorization (RMA) request within 10 business days of the receipt of the product. If the item is returned unopened in the original box, we will exchange it or offer you a refund based on your original method of payment. The product must be returned to the Apple warehouse within 10 business days of the issuance of the RMA. All products must be packed in the original, unmarked packaging including any accessories, manuals, documentation and registration that shipped with the product. A 10% open box fee will be assessed on any opened hardware or accessory. If you purchased your order using an Apple Instant Loan or an Apple Business Lease, you may be asked to provide a major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover) for Apple to assess the 10% open box restocking fee.
Please note that Apple does not permit the return of or offer refunds for the following products:
Product that is custom configured to your specifications
Opened memory
Opened software
Electronic software downloads
Personalized iPods
Software Up to Date Program Products (SW upgrades)

I'd have to weigh in with those predicting a March 30 PM update. I think that there will be news about the PowerPC series at IBM's Power Series roadmap news conference on March 31, and as I mentioned previously on a different thread, I think Apple would like to make the announcements themselves, rather than let IBM have all the limelight.
Of course, I'm probably wrong...

Hey, thanks for all the info. I think I'll probably get the BTO to save the $200 from the superdrive. This computer decision making is not for the faint of heart, is it?

And once again the wait and countdown continues. Can't wait till i can get my hands on a Rev B G5 so i won't have to keep checking macrumors every few hours to see if anything has changed. Then again where would the anticipation be if i wasn't checking. Oh well you win some, you lose some. In the end something always ends up wrong. In this case its everyones predictions for the new PM's and LCD's.
Oh well will be back in the morning to see if anything new then checking every few hours.
