Hopefully, my dual G4/800 will last me a year or two more. After that, I'll be ready but the speed is fine so I have no immediate need.

2-3 years from now, by then who knows what speed it will be at or if there'll be a (god forbid) G6. It will probably be in the form of an iMac, but I'm starting to like the laptop idea.Powermac would be cool too for the POWER!!!!!

Clicked 3GHz, but probably should have clicked other... I'm looking for a confluence of events that I guess I'm expecting to happen around the 3GHz time-- including new displays and SMT. My hand might get forced though if this 400MHz iMac fails first.
I keep a desktop at home and a laptop at work. If I can hang on with the iMac, I'd like to go with a dual Power5 based G5 desktop and, of course, I'll need a display to go with it since I'll be changing from the all-in-one iMac.
I've got another year and a half to wait before I can replace the PowerBook at work which should be about right. I wouldn't buy a first generation PB G5.

I'm graduating from high school in two years. By then I'm sure they'll have the G5 in the Powerbook. It's going to be one sweet graduation present!
Hopefully (probably) my iMac 800 will last until then.

I am expecting G5PB this year. I think Apple would be smarter waiting 3 months more to bring it out than waste and disappoint fans by bringing out a bandaid minor bump...and all who by that would be pissed when the G5 appears I think..

But how many people waiting for this to happen already have a 15" G4 Ali as a stop gap till the G5 comes out?

My nice 1.25 GHz G4 17" iMac suits me just fine for now, and will for the next few years for the type of work I need to do. So, I guess my answer to this poll is possibly never, depending on what's out in a couple years when I might purchase a new Mac. I'll either be buying a 4 GHz G5 (or whatever the clockspeed is), if they have the same chip in a few years (which I doubt), or I'll never buy a G5, aand end up buying a G6! Of course, if I decide to go the iMac route again, even if G6s are out in the PMs, the iMacs may very well still have G5s at that point too... Guess I'll just have to wait and see!

with my PC which is just 1,5 years old...i guess the earliest time should be late 2005 for a new desktop (more likely: 2006)
but who knows perhaps it fails before and i have to buy a new one (mac/pc not clear now)
but i will get myself a laptop next year 2005 as an addition to my pc which will be iBook (and i doubt the iBook will have a G5 in mid-2005)

I'll buy a G5 the day they release it is anything smaller that the Giant metal case. Sure it looks great but it's way to big. So I picked iMac, but any pb/emac/ibook/smallcase would do.

I voted other - I'm not getting a G5 (G6? G7??) until 2007. I've got my little 17" iMac G4 that I'm very happy with. I'll be watching the rumor scene for PowerMac updates anyway - I want to see what new ideas come along from Apple for the PowerMacs between now and Jan '07.

I voted for 'when it's in a Powerbook'. Honestly, I've come to find that I have no use for a desktop at home--I've got an office that I hardly ever use. When I'm at home, I'm usually crashing on my couch with my Powerbook. If and when the time comes, I'll probably try to sell my PBG4 and replace it with a PBG5.

I am in the exact opposite situation. I have no use for a notebook; that's why I have an iMac and plan to replace it with a PowerMac in 2007. I've never had the desire to take my computer with me; that is why I gave up my PowerBook for the iMac I have now.

Something must be wrong with me. I can't justify buying a G5 until I repair my Dual Athlon 1900 system. Sure it's a PC, but it's still faster than my Powerbook, although nowhere near as nice to use. It's only after that, and after either my Powerbook or the Athlon becomes useless that I'll buy a G5.
Since the Powerbook is an Apple and the Athlon is just a server system, it's going to be awhile.
An eBook or Apple PDA on the other hand, I'd buy immediately.
Stupid pragmatism. It never lets me have any fun.

I'll buy a g5, or whatever is the current processor, when I actually have a need for it. Right now I can run all my software great, watch and burn dvd's, pretty much do anything personal computers can do these days. Once my computers are unable to run the current software, then I will have to upgrade. Right now I don't get much of a boner over the thought of being able to render an effect faster in FinalCut. So for now I'll continue to suffer with my oh so slow 1.25 ghz PM, and 1ghz PB.

VivPlus, I travel back and forth to different sites for work. I've already got a G5 desktop at work (thanks boss), and right now at least, I doubt they're going to buy me a laptop for travel. I'm currently using my own personal Powerbook when I travel, so when the PB G5's come out, I might just upgrade since I use it so much. I'm really curious as to how they're going to have to change the physical appearance of the Powerbook to accomodate the G5. But that's another thread...
I must say though, there is something appealing about owning a G5 desktop. I love my computer at work, but I often think about how nice it would look in my home :)

I'm with you.. although I have a portable, I only use it when I absolutely have to.
It's funny how the Mac community seems a bit split at the moment, PowerBook users waiting for a G5 PB and not caring what else comes out,and desktop users waiting for 3GHz Power Macs / G5 iMacs and not caring about the portables.

You're absolutely right; there does seem to be two types of Mac user: those with desktops waiting for desktop updates, and those with notebooks waiting for notebook updates. The funny thing is that neither of these two 'camps' seem to see that they're all Mac users waiting for Apple to release updates.

Exactly! That should've been one of the selections. "When you can afford one." I don't need tons of power, so I'm hoping that the new breed comes out, and I could buy a single 1.6 or single 1.8 for cheap. Or maybe even on ebay get a dual g4 tower.

I am hoping the iMac G5 will be out and about by Fall this year. I have an iMac G4 800Mhz 17" and an iBook G3 900Mhz 14" that some guy was selling for way too cheap and thought I could make a buck. I have buyers lined up for both just as soon as this semester is over.
I have had a mac since 2000 and I have started a pattern of trying to upgrade every year or year and a half. I don't really need the power, but I would like to keep up with the new technology and I really love the big displays. Of course its nice to have a mac that can handle all my web design apps and the usual apps (mail, safari, ichat, etc) on at the same time. Sometimes my iMac gets a little slow (768mb).
I think they should go bigger with the iMac monitor along with the upgrade to G5. Split the unit up if they have to. Keep it the same price, or cheaper :-), and sell them as an iMac unit, but sell the compact tower and monitor as a 2 piece. Yeah yeah, Cube right? Well, iMac is cheaper and they can make a better design than the cube.
thats my 2 bits.

I answered, "When it's in a Powerbook" but that doesn't mean I will be waiting for a G5 to buy a Powerbook. The space a desktop takes up has become a real issue, and while I love the expandability and the lower cost, slapping drives in external firewire enclosures and stacking them out of the way makes up for the expandability, and the cost is just something I have to weigh against the space concerns. Right now I use a PC notebook for the mobile needs, but even with MacDrive, Stuffit, and all the mac-enabling software I can find, it is still a poor substitute.
So one way or another, the desktop will have to go, and a Powerbook will be taking its place.

I'll buy a G5 when the LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse match the G5 case, and the tower itself goes on a diet. There must be a way to get all that dual-processor goodness into a smaller box... save us Mr. Ive!

well, i said powerbook but should have went with other or 3ghz+. I usually like to go up one full processor grade each upgrade, im at a mdd 867 now, from a imac dv 400. so im thinking basically when the g5 hits about single 2.5ghz - or dual 2 ghz for the entry level model. its nearly a 3 year cycle for me, and im about halfway through. plus i want a second optical bay.

And I don't think Apple has any problem with the resources needed to release several product updates at once - the problem, if any, is they generally don't release too many products at once so they don't steal each others' publicity. That's probably why there's such 'rivalry' at the moment.

Really depends. I buy a new computer only when my present one dies or becomes too slow for use (being Macs, generally they get outdated first). So my G3 will probably be soon replaced by a G4 iBook, which would be replaced by whatever PowerBook or iBook is available when the G4 iBook becomes unusable.

Dual G4s in a PB would be nice, but I think with that liquid cooling stuff and the lower power but higher performing G5s (when clocked back a little), a dual G5PB is more likely someday...end ? 2005?
But how much more expensive would that be?
And the ram slots etc...maybe only a 17"...
If they do a dual, you won't need a second PM...so I wonder if they would consider a full on graphics art PB with dual g5s and a 19" or so screen...

You know if we assume the Apple marketing department (bless them) read this and other rumor sites for research on the cheap then I think we should all start lying! big style!
Think about it if we all say we have the money put aside (so we are not penniless students then) and we will only spend it on a Duel G5 Powerbook of at least 2ghz with 2Gb of ram and 120Gb drive.
Guess what they would recommend the sales department pony up:-)
Come on its worth a try:-)

Apple may do the occasional browse of the forums, perhaps sporadically around release dates to gage market reactions as part of their media areas work, but I wouldn't place much faith in being able to influence them on much.

I can wait until the G5 iBook because my Dual 800MHz G4 PowerMac is exactly what I need for DV editing. In the mean-time I could install even bigger 3.5" hard drives (there is space for four), more RAM, FW800, USB 2.0, a new AGP card, a PCI graphics card (for a 3rd and 4th display) and an iPod. The G5 chip has a long way to go before it makes a computer like mine seem slow.
