iMac 24" AL - Multiple Displays Issue

I have a VGA monitor and a mini-DVI to VGA adapter but I am not getting anything when I click "detect displays" in system preferences.

Am I right in thinking this should work?

I've tried a different monitor and the same is happening.

Could it be a dodgy Adapter or is there something else I need to do?

usually it should show up... at least I dont ever do anything else...
it could be the adapter, or a cable, or the graphics card, or it could be software-related. sorry, but thats all I can tell you
