That's the silliest use of GPS.

I have no problem with using Google Map to find out where I am and how to get where I want to go. Personally, I don't think GPS is a big deal.

However, the moment I REALLY NEED a GPS is in the middle of nowhere, with no cell connection (like that CNet editor who lost his life a couple of years ago).

A GPS pulling data OTA is useless and only give people a false sense of security.

Wouldn't you like an app that will alert you of traffic and re-route you and give you a voice command when your exit or turn is coming up so you don't pass it and have to double back? Would you like to have a really good ETA so that you can let someone know when you're going to show up after a two hour drive? I had Telenav on my Blackberry and it was great. No false sense of security. I travel a lot and when I'm in a rental car in a new city, believe me there was nothing false about it!

(and yes, it did pull all of the info ota and ran great in the background when I got a phone call.)

The interesting thing was that Telenav on my Blackberry continued to function even in an area with no data. There are certain areas of LA where you can drive for miles through canyons with no signal at all and as long as I started the Telenav before I got into the canyon, it would work great.

This is not a surprise. None of us who currently own an iPhone should be shocked that other comparable phones have the basic features that the iPhone is missing. Unfortunately, like other posters have said, we'll have to wait till June....

The iPhone is not a fashion statement to me, but regardless of what it does I'm not gonna go out and spend $300 on an ugly phone with a cheap plastic keyboard. Turn by Turn is something that can be added in a software update, but an ugly phone will always be an ugly phone regardless of what software is on it.

How about use common sense, and prepare before you go out somewhere you have NFI about? Look up where you need to go before you go! Better yet, read a bloody map! If I were going to an unfamiliar city, before I go to it, I find out all I need to know about where I need to go BEFORE even leaving! If you don't, you deserve to get lost. In that sense, a turn-by-turn GPS is like a government bailout. Like the Boy Scouts say (and the one thing that really makes sense with them), be prepared.

Bradl, just what I want to do ... when I have to go to a new city for one or two days, I want to study maps, "find out all I need to know" (even if I'm not sure exactly sure where I need to be before hand), and read a map in a strange town. No thanks. My days of printing out 10 pages of mapquest and trying to read them while I'm driving are over. I'll leave that to the Boy Scouts and you.
