Hi

My sister has an ibook G4 and both the power supply plug thing *and* the socket on the ibook are damaged. She can't charge it and now its battery is flat.

I guess its not too difficult to find a new charger (although I'd welcome suggestions for suppliers) but what about repairing/replacing the socket on the laptop?

Is it practical to do for a reasonable cost? Anywhere in the UK that'd be able to do it?

The part on the iBook is the DC-in board and is a relatively small piece. You can try googling it or looking on eBay.

It looks like this:

thanks. Easy enough to self-replace? Or is it a repair centre/store job?

also, does it matter what size it is? (not sure if its 12 or 14")

12 vs 14" matters:

12": http://www.ifixit.com/iBook-Parts/iBook-G4-12-Inch-DC-In-Board/IF183-030

14": http://www.ifixit.com/iBook-Parts/iBook-G4-14-Inch-DC-In-Board/IF184-003

On top of that, the 12" model seems particular as to what serial range it's from "Please use our ID your Mac page to ensure this is the correct DC-in board for your computer. This DC-in board is only compatible with iBook G4 12" laptops that are model A1054 or A1133 (printed on the bottom of the laptop)."
