I'm helping out my friend by jailbreaking her iPhone EDGE. She wants it unlocked as well, so I just have to ask. How do I (step-by-step) jailbreak and activate and iPhone EDGE? From time to time, I hear stuff about modem versions, and how if people updated the modem then the iPhone is "bricked". Can someone explain that to me? And what do I need for the jailbreak? What files do I need?

Right. Here's how it works.

You use a search engine. You search for a jailbreaking tutorial for the version of the OS that you want (I'd recommend 2.2.1). You follow the instructions.

The modern jailbreaking process is safe. If you follow the instructions carefully you won't brick your phone. If you're careless, you won't brick your phone. It's technically possible, but pretty damn unlikely. If you screw up, you're almost certainly just a DFU restore away from a working phone.

Oh, and before you ask what a DFU restore is, I should point out: if you don't know what a DFU restore is, you haven't read enough yet. ;-)

I do use a search engine. But, will I have to worry about the modem firmware being updated and the phone not able to be activated?

Again, this is covered extensively by many, many, many different sources.

Depending on what version you flash of the firmware you flash to the iPhone, the baseband may be updated... but the baseband has nothing to do with activation.

This is what you need:

Just follow it carefully.

The 2G iphone does not have the unlocking problems currently faced by the 3G, go ahead and do it the way it says.
