With XServes shipping, it is now proof that the chips are working. With the IBM event on the 31st it should seem clear that something new is going on and I would personnally cal it "imminent." I woted for the 30th, but i would not be surprised if Apple unveiled with the IBM event and did a Wed. release. Besides, they need something to offer to NAB on April 18th. So, in conclusion, I think they cramming the chips in newly made cases right now so that they can perform immediate shipping. The chip works now, no reason to hold it off any longer.

Never.
I think Apple will blind us with another 12 upgrades to the iPod, and then drop-out of the computer market altogether.
But then I don't get out mucha nd am liable to telling fibs.

My sites are on the Stevenote, WWDC at the end of June. If it is going to be a 3.0 update Rev. B then they are going to want a large audience. :)

I'd say we'll see them sometime within the next few weeks, not sure exactly when though. But I don't think they'll wait to WWDC. That would just be way too long, IMO.

I stay by the next week, latest the week after... I'm needing a PB urgently and this rumors site is driving me crazy :) wait... don't buy... wait ... and because I can't stay without Mac, just got an eMac because I sold my PB 12" rev A. last year, I wanted to order a new one but macrumors.com said, updates coming soon... of course, it says buy only if you need, yes, but it was almost 2 months ago :( ... still living on Desktop and waiting the update, maybe my history is offtopi but had to talk to someone ;) , again on topic, Powermacs coming soon, and my wished PB at WWDC, :(
My Cent, the other 0.01 for my PB ;)

the lack of any substancial updates likely means one of two things. One, there have been unforeseen complications that have kept Apple from unveiling anything new in the powermac line. Two, Apple has something up their sleeve that will trump the current competing pc market.
I'd like to hope that it's the latter, but I can't imagine what the tech could be. Perhaps it's some sort of business move. Maybe they're waiting until right before the end of the quarter to buy all the materials needed for major production. This could help pad the books against steeper taxes from an impending boom in sales.

If the 3.0 GHz models are going to come out in the summer, then I don't think there will be any interim update. But if the 3.0's are delayed in any way and won't be around until the holidays or later, then I would expect an update by April 18.
Personally I think March/April for the Power Mac and display updates, and then the July-September quarter will see 4G iPods and G5 PowerBooks, and the October-December quarter will see updates to eMacs, iBooks, iMacs, and iPod minis. And I don't think the 3.0GHz will happen until just after the holidays (MWSF 2005).
Of course, I want updates on everything now.... :D

definitely march 30 - it is the tuesday after the memory promo ends and we are already seeing signs that the present PM lines are running low.

My guess: After April.
I voted on May, which got the fewest votes (so far). I still think the new G5 PowerMacs will not be released on March...something tells me that, yet Steve still has a promise to keep about matching 3.0GHz within the near future.

What the hell, I'll be naively optimistic for once - next Tuesday for sure!!! I'm counting on it!!!
Hmm, too bad NeatGekko can't vote on this poll - his choice of "3 GHz PM released by the end of February" isn't available for some odd reason... ;)

Same here. How nice would it be to come back a year later and follow through with the promise?

Well if they have the chips for the xserve then can bring out a rev B pretty much anytime but as I understand it its unlikely to go past 2.4-2.6 in speed. But if they dont release 1 soon they will be getting close to that end of Summer when Steve will really want to announce the 3Ghz box.
But if they dont have an interim powermac release they will have a timeing problem in july/August WWDC/event Blah/blah new powermacs Dual 2.2,2.6,3.0 avaliable in 30 days... ie everbody knows this means october/november probably. Imac 1.6-1.8. Pbook 1.6 etc.... available right now..... Imacs and pbooks sell like hot cakes and everbody sits on their hands before ordering Powermacs because its going to be months before they get them.
So my guess would have to be either very soon or not till wwdc

Well the 30th coincides with the end of the specials...
But I wonder if STeve wants to show his new gear off, at least things like a new iMac and the new PBG5, and we will have to wait for the WWDC end of June...which kinda sux

At the current release rate, we might just jump straight to the G6...

Could it be possible for an update within 2 weeks than in June announce 3.0, since when do we have to be on a 6 month schedule.

Never.
single 2.0 g5 xserves are shipping right now . dual 2.0 xserves are going to ship in april . inbetween there is no reason why apple should have a faster powermac . well, they could annouce it, but i dout it . this would mean, waiting again for a powermac . and in apple business this waiting thing sucks big time (latest example xserve g5 ... )
i'm waiting for rev b powermacs . no way that i would buy an dual 2.0 g5 at the current price

It all depends on the definition of soon by Apple. I do want to see them get it right this time. My though also is that it will be something big. Your estimate for the 3ghz would fit my timing currenty.

i've lost the interest to buy a new mac so apple can release it whenever they want. i was all set out a few months ago to buy a new apple but no updated hardware was released. i wont buy an outdated hardware for $2000. i'll just check the apple site once in a while maybe i'll buy one next year.

We wouldnt have to be if apple were quick about actually shipping their stuff. It is worse because I am the end of the line out in Australia but 5 years ago you could generally rely on at least a chance of buying a machine 1 week after release now its 2-3 months. Hmm Mid april +3 months = Mid July. Their is no way I would buy a new powermac 2 weeks before the SteveNote at WWDC

I agree, the wait is too long for interm updates unless the 3.0 G5 will be delayed long past summer. Maybe announced but not shipped till nov. IF there are interum updates. Maybe they have waited because IBM is doing a GOOD job and 3.0 G5s are here NOW. Granted, I could just be wishfully thinking, but we should have seen some updates by now. The only way to put a positive spin would be a 3.0 G5 update, even just announcing and then having a summer delivery. That would kick ass and be a "see, I told you we would have 3.0Ghz by next year!" Would rather have that than a delay.

I dont think G5s sold in the numbers they had hoped for. They may have rethought the whole structure and all product lines. I hope so. They still have to overcome years of motostagnation and do nothing attitude and that will be a big hill to climb. Apples Hardware division is a mess. I still would like to see Markler so I could have the best software on the best Hardware. Each side screws you. Wintel does it with poor software,Apple does it with poor hardware.

I think Apple hardware is definetly at a low point besides the G5 at present, but these things go in cycles. After the WWDC we could see new G5iMacs, G5PBs, new G4eMacs and G4iBooks as well as the 3GhzPM. If that happened, or at leats was announced ay the WWDC for the next 2-3 months then I think Apple (assuming specs and prices are both relatively as desired) could turn there current slump around...
Wishful thinking perhaps...

G5s sales numbers have dropped every qtr since introduced, this reflects on lots of issues but i think Motostagnation is and will continue to hurt Apple. Apple's Hardware has a history of not matching the otherside at all. Moto made sure of that. Now the ball is in Apples& IBMs hands but we have seen nothing so far. They had the ball but lost it. no new models to replace all those old G4s??? no updates to the G5? are they going to go to annual updates? telling resellers the channel will be dry for 3 weeks? what is going on? they should have redesigned Imac with a single G5 last summer? they had years of moto doing nothing and should have been planning on this the same time they where working on the G5 tower. Its been said Apple can only do one thing at a time. I think thats true.

Well it's only 3 more days to we will have that answer! :)
Apple can work on multiple things at a time, look at all the announcements made at WWDC '03 and MWSF '04.
Just keep on making those Poll suggestions guys. When arn is ready he will post another. The reason for the wait could be that he is busy with our from, busy with his medical practice, or he's on vacation.

Given this latest news about another Apple promotion involving G5s lasting almost until WWDC, I'm less confident now that the G5s will be updated on March 30, 2004. I'm now thinking that nobody will see new G5s until WWDC 2004. It sure would be a shame if that happened.

Here's the thread about Apple's new promotion: Link to Thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65765).
I agree with your reasoning that Apple must be avoiding an interim update and releasing the 3.0 GHz machine as the Rev. B PowerMac G5. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but Apple extended their memory deal to June 26, the same day that this new promotion expires (the link is on MacBytes).
