Any news on Samsung 256 GB SSD ?

... supposedly they went into mass production at the end of last year or the beginning of 2009. Since then I haven't heard anything? Does it take that long to build up stock before a new item goes out for sale? Or have there been any technology problems?

... just wondering ...
 
I would like to know as well.

Now I am considering upgrading my HDD in the ordered 17" to Samsung by myself. But still cannot find any recent reviews or any website that sells them at all.

I wonder whether the 256 GB SSD option on the new unibody 17" will be that Samsung drive. Probably not: at ~700 Euro the upgrade would be too competitive for Apple price standards, I guess.

Well some of the Dell laptops have the sammy 256gb for 400$ extra. So 700$ extra at Apple sounds about right. DVNation have it backordered with the price of $1175.

I heard they will be available in early March--these are the guys selling them on eBay at present. This seems to fit with the delays shipping the 17" MacBook Pro with SSD.

I spoke to an Apple rep who seemed to think it was a Samsung drive in this machine, but his source was outside Apple and I could not find any evidence of this at the sites he mentioned.

I have one that has been on order since Jan 26th. There have been several slips on the ship date. I'll be opening up my machine as soon as I get it to check on the drive type.

I got my MacBook Pro 17" yesterday...(UK) The specs are basicly top.. so no need to repeat them!! I do however have the 256GB SSD... It is as far as I know, a samsung drive, but then I don't know how to find out??? It runs really fast... even faster than it's older bro which had an intel 128gb inside...

Open the System Profiler, Go down to Serial ATA and Tell us the Samsung model name that is under the nVidia SATA controller.

Also, there is no such 128GB Intel Drive. Only 80/160GB and 32GB E series.

Could you PLEASE go to the system profiler (Apple menu/about this Mac/More info/Hardware) and look up the SSD model number?

And the bad news is that the SSD is not a Samsung but a Toshiba, with really poor performances......

I'm really angry about this because I ordered this MBP with SSD two month ago thinking it was a samsung with good performanes...

Thanks apple.......... two month to get a macbook with a bad ssd drive...

My French is bad but what I understand from the review the overall impression of the machine is one word - Perfect!

They also say that the display quality, matte finish and brightness is close to the 30 inch Apple Cinema Display . And thats exactly what I wanted .. to I am happy ... verry happy ...

tough they where verry disapointed with the performance of the SSD that according to them only could read at a maximum of 100 compared to Samsungs 200 ...

if they says its perfect .. i trust them 🙂

In a couple of months, this drive will be less than $400. Get this and OptiBay it into my MBP which has a 500GB HDD. Clone the boot drive to the Vertex and be done with it!.
OS and Core apps on SSD and some data, rest of data music etc on HDD. Cost less and likely whacked the Sammy out of the water.

You could say the same thing about OCZ Summit which is rumored to come out in late March. This is based on the new Samsung MLC controller, 240/220 read/write. 128GB for 400-500$

yes i do really get a feeling of perfection on this new MBP but i'm really disapointed by the 256 SSD perfomances. very itchy part indeed... I did take the superdrive out and add a second SSD inside, an intel X25 this time...
the benchs are way faster with the X25.
I like the screen more and more... great tons and colors. not much brightness compare to my Air, but enough thoug, again, same as my ACD 30".
save your money on the SSD. buy an extra X-25 and you'll get a beast 🙂

I have just looked back at some old threads...

I'm sorry guys... I hadn't really opened my machine to find out what the model of the SSD was... Nor had I checked in System Profiler... I'm sorry to any people that thought I was a liar... Sometimes you shouldn't jump to conclusions
