Why can't an ATV with ssh enabled clone it's own HD?

I absolutely love my 40G ATV but would love it more if I could drop a larger HD into it. I don't have a Mac (I have a Windows XP machine)

Is there a reason a patchsticked ATV can't back itself up to an external USB drive?
