View Full Version : Favorite Movie Robots

Doctor Q

CNET posted its Top 5 coolest movie robots (http://cnettv.cnet.com/8301-13415_53-10162263-11.html). Anyone want to disagree with their choices? Which are your favorite movie robots and why?

I think their Top 5 choices weren't bad, but that they missed a lot of good movie robots, like the ones who starred in "I, Robot" and "Bicentennial Man". What else did they miss?

Two of my favorites:

Johnny-Cab (http://www.robotliving.com/wp-content/images/johnnycab.jpg), the cab driver in "Total Recall". What's cool is that he's relentlessly polite, no matter what happens to him.

Tik-Tok the machine man (http://www.coolaggregator.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/tik_tok0012.jpg) from "Return to Oz", which was based on Oz books by L. Frank Baum. What's cool about Tik-Tok is that you have to wind him up, and his speaking and his thinking and his movement may run out independently.

Movies with robots that "go bad" are always entertaining :) but almost any robot makes a cool movie character. I also like computers in movies, but to qualify as a robot I think a movie character has to have an anthropomorphic form, so HAL from 2001 wouldn't qualify. :( I know you'd like me to include you in this list, HAL, but I'm afraid I can't do that. ;)

The robot from Rocky IV!

I liked it because it was an example of the movie's relentless quest to be relevant to the mid-80s. It had the big, bad Soviets, a Lamborghini, and a home robot!

Wall-E.

Johnny-5 (for his day that is..)

Robocop.

R2D2 is right at the bottom I think. he was just irritating.

I thought of two dogbots from movies:

* Preston the dog in Wallace and Gromit's "A Close Shave".

* The little dog-like robots that scamper around under Darth Vader's direction in Star Wars. What was their purpose, anyway?

My favourite movie robot is Maria from Metropolis, the original(ish) and best. Nice to see she actually made the list, I must admit to being a bit surprised at that.

Here's a question though – do we count HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey as a robot or as a 'mere' computer? I ask because he was well cool.

The little dog-like robots that scamper around under Darth Vader's direction in Star Wars. What was their purpose, anyway?Easy – they were there to chase cats away from the Death Star. May the paws be with you.

Might I add the Doctor's faithful robotic pooch K-9 to the list, too?

If you're a fan, I massively recommend Kino's 75th Anniversary Edition, it's an amazing release athough the commentary is a tad dry!

My favourite movie robot is Maria from Metropolis, the original(ish) and best. Nice to see she actually made the list, I must admit to being a bit surprised at that.I wasn't around to see Metropolis in a movie theater in 1927, but I did get to see it in a theater. It was playing at the Silent Movie Theater (http://www.silentmovietheatre.com/) in West Hollywood a couple of years ago. I couldn't believe a movie like that could be made so long ago.

Here's a question though – do we count HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey as a robot or as a 'mere' computer? I ask because he was well cool. :cool:I addressed that very question in the first post in this thread. He didn't make the cut. I would also exclude robots that are only a cartoon. Sorry, Bender.

I addressed that very question in the first post in this thread.Indeed you did. I must confess I got so excited by the prospect of a movie robot list I didn't read all the way to the end of the opening post, because I wanted to see what treasures your link held. :o

There's a very important lesson to be had here, kids.

Here are a few more that I remember, and that weren't in the CNET list:

* The servants in "Sleeper". Woody Allen pretends to be one of them.

* The child named David in "A.I.", played by Haley Joel Osment. His adult pal Gigolo Joe is already in the CNET list.

* All of the transformers in "Transformers".

* The wives in "The Stepford Wives"!

Also agreed, but from an entirely different perspective.

Doctor Q
Feb 17, 2009, 07:36 PM
If we count androids then we can include Ash in "Alien". He was missing from the CNET list, although Bishop from "Aliens" is included.

The robots in "*batteries not included" are aliens, but they're mechanical, so we might as well include them.

I don't think we can include Simone from "S1m0ne" since the character is simulated, not a robot. I guess Ironman and Spiderman's Doctor Octopus don't really count as robots either. Humans augmented with gadgets aren't really machines, but it's hard to tell where to draw the line. Do we rule out Locutus of Borg and his pals from the Star Trek movies?

Do we rule out Locutus of Borg and his pals from the Star Trek movies?

Similarly, Robocop, or any sort of cyborg, or any life form animated and controlled by a robotic force (IE nanomachines), begs that question.

It may sound harsh, but I don't think we can class cyborgs - such as the Borg and the Cybermen - as robots. After all, we don't class Lee Major from The Six Million Dollar Man as a robot, do we?

Although he's not in any movies, I vote for Kryten 2X4B-523P. Any robot that can break it's original programming and grow beyond what it was designed for is tops in my book. I'd vote for Skynet except it's computer, not a robot.:(

For movie robots, I guess I'll go with Voltron. "Form feet and legs...";)

KeriJane

R2D2!

Especially from Episodes 1,3 and 5.... R2 was Cool.
Got holes shot in your spaceship? An autopilot that won't take "No" for an answer? A bad case of buzz droids? Whether your ship sunk in a swamp or you got a busted hyperdrive, R2D2 will open that door, turn off the blast furnace, fix this, adjust that or even staple 3P0 back together just in time to deliver lightsabers or help blow up death stars.

The "Clanker" Battle Droids are more silly than cool but some of General Grievous's personal Guards are pretty cool...you know, the ones that keep fighting after you cut their head off and stay in one piece after the first couple of lightsaber strikes.

Marvin The Paranoid Android as "Cool"? Eh. He's too depressed to be cool. The Hitchhikers Series is cool.
Even cute, schmaltzy, malfunctioning Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth class droids are cooler than Marvin. Sirius Cybernetics just doesn't do "Cool".

Speaking of Wall-E.... Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluators are Cool. Even clumsy little Burn-E welding droids don't do badly.

I thought the "Old" robots in "I, Robot" were cool. Not the new, fancy Killer Robots, not even Sonny... but the old, discarded robots ("RUN!") trying to save the humans from the new ones... those were Cool!

Of course The Terminators were Cool. Bad ones, Good ones, even the liquid metal ones..... all Cool. Did they not count because of their artificial living tissue covering? The droid inside was a robot, not a cyborg....

Other ones i'm not sure if anyone's mentioned:

Fembots from Austin Powers

The Evil, Killer Bill and Ted robots from the future

Rosie from the Jetsons along with Uniblab and also the poor, befuddled dance instructor robot.

Have Fun,
Keri

PS. Anybody want to start threads on "Favorite Movie Computers" like HAL and "Favorite Movie Cyborgs" like Davros?
