iPod not working! folder with !

i'm in a bit of a bad mood about this... original iPod, when i start it up, i get the ugly folder with the exclamtion mark, like it can't find startup files or something... any brilliant ideas to fix this??

Open iPod software updater
Restore.

Have you tried reformatting it with the iPod Software Update?

mine did the very same thing....not sure what is wrong....i did some research and it needs a new harddrive when something like this happens....if anyone has any other ideas please inform me
