I'm game for a topic in here (I picked sports because I've got an arena football team client now). Suggestions are appreciated and encouraged for photo "theme" threads - but don't feel my suggestion of a topic confines you to only that subject matter. It's nice to see such a healthy thread live so long in so many incantations.

and with that... happy shooting! :D

Wow, Photography X! Where's Tazo? He dreamed of the 10th incarnation....

I'll get us started with a heavily photoshopped beach panorama...healing brush is an excellent tool....

Thanks! It probably took more time to use photomerge to get it pretty close than it took to actually fix up the waves....I still had to fix up the water level in the rightmost pic though since it got messed up somehow...

Nice zync, very nice. We've had some ugly weather lately, but you made it look better.

I was practicing at the wrestling practice the other night and got this shot, which I thought had a neut look to it.

Not up to the rest of you pros, but I thought this one came out cool

I think the composition is quite good. It's a shame you couldn't shoot it at a smaller aperture to increase depth of field. At risk of blurry the people because of long exposure (which could look good) you'd get more perspective in the image from the window frame. Just my $0.02.

Good pic tho.

Most of us aren't pros and your pic is pretty cool....it could've had slightly more DOF but that's about it...and yeah, a motion blur might be cool with the entire window in focus, but I think that would've been hard for him if he didn't have manual aperture controls or an ND filter....

To heck with depth of field--the rain drops are sharp. If you want you could play with this idea and make a better raindrop background/crop.

Yahooz: More raindrop adjustments in the sports thread. Print as giclée and put it up for sale. :p You could work on photos like this forever and each person would have different and even multiple ideas.

Zync: your seascape is really a beauty! It would be fun to see the images that made it up before you stitched it together.

well, i might as well join this tenth incarnation.

here is one with the theme i mind. a very unappealing b-ball hoop. plus, a couple more i fancy. :)

it was a grey day in chicago, as most of us midwesterners know. hard to get good color and contrast. but, wow, was it a great temp. i was hot with jeans an a t-shirt!

oh- zync- really like the shot at the top of the page. nice work.

Interesting you should post that today. I live near Tampa (used to live in Tampa) which houses Mac Dill AFB and there is an air show on saturday, which I'll have to miss sadly. Anyway the Blue Angels were flying all over the place all day. I was picking up my gf from school and everyone looked up...I thought it looked like some F-18s (well FA-18 Hornets to be exact)...they were flying pretty cool with just two planes not really in formation....they did a few barrel rolls etc....I also thought they could be like some F-15Es though I didn't think they flew those anymore. Sure enough later as we drove farther away, my gf was on the phone and missed it, they flew not more than 1k ft. above the city and as I looked out the window I saw the bottom of one as it turned. It was pretty sweet, but I wish I had my camera out.

I miss the F-16s they used to fly. At least I think they used to fly 16s. I really liked the F-16....they try to say the F-18 is better and more maneuverable...but I always thought that in different video I had seen that the F-16 looks much more agile. It was almost able to make a 90° turn at near full speed (without afterburner I'm sure), and it has these little wheels on the edge of the wing which did something to the air which made it more agile. Hmmm...now I want to look this stuff up. Wish I could get pics at the airshow. It is, however, one of my great grandmothers' birthdays and I happen to be off so I don't quite think that'll happen :(

it is just not the same as my digi. i can't do my macros with it, as the focus is 3' to infinity (what key combo is the infinity symbol? i looked in keycaps...)

plus, without instant feedback, manual settings, this is a tough one for me.

That's an Air-Force jet. Before the FA-18 they used the A-4F Skyhawk II from 1974 to 1986.

The AirForce Thunderbirds currently use the F-16. As to which is more manuverable, it's hard to say, they both have better max rates in differing areas. The FA-18 has a higher payload, thrust to weight, Max thrust, and can take off and land from a carrier deck. The F-16 has a higher ceiling (over 50,000ft) and higher top speed at that altitude Mach 2.0 (the FA-18 is 1.7 at 35,000ft)

I'd much rather be in an F-18 for two reasons. Engine one and Engine two.

neut - actually I too hate blogs....but whatever I figure maybe I'll make a mockery out of them? I dunno I don't want it to be some self-important POS though....BTW nice pic above!

slowtreme - yeah I realized that after a little while....I had forgotten the blue angels were navy...I thought somewhere I read the F-16 was max at mach 1.5 but 2.0 seems way more likely and that it's ceiling was 50k ft....anyway I'd still rather have the F-16 for maneuverability, etc. The two engines vs. one engine thing is a big deal but I don't recall an F-16 losing power to it's engine, and being hit with any modern missile would most likely destroy both of the F-18's engines...

anyway so you live in tampa too eh? wherabout?

bousozoku - thanks for the comment about my blog....BTW did anyone notice that when you mouse over the Joe:Blog text it displays the page title next to it? I tried to make it work with the alt title too but that didn't work :)

it's actually one of the nicer blogs i've seen. a few guys here at work are tweakin' with those things. i don't have any interest in them yet... (i try to stick to Flash if possible) so i'll just rape their minds for the info after they've done all the work :D.

it does have some resizing issues (post titles run into the post dates), but nothing that would be noticed when viewing 800x600+. no one should be running under that anyways... it's just retarded.

i'm shooting with a Sony DSC-F717 (lots of cross-processing to get the colors and contrast)

as for tazo... he was banned. he hangs around some other forums like photozo.com (http://www.photozo.com/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=1685)

it does have some resizing issues (post titles run into the post dates), but nothing that would be noticed when viewing 800x600+. no one should be running under that anyways... it's just retarded.

i design for 1024x768 or better now. If you choose 800x600, start scrollin, but i don't know one person who can't do 1024x768, although i know some people who have good eye sight and choose 800x600 for some odd reason. (PC users, no less)

anyway I'd still rather have the F-16 for maneuverability, etc. The two engines vs. one engine thing is a big deal but I don't recall an F-16 losing power to it's engine, and being hit with any modern missile would most likely destroy both of the F-18's engines...

anyway so you live in tampa too eh? wherabout?Well like I said, I don't know of a published study of which jet has the best manuverability, but my vote is still the FA18. I give the falcon props for the high celing and it's aviaonics package including the fly by wire. But that's a jet that if anything goes wrong, there is no way to save it. There are zero manual backup systems. :(

I'm actually in St. Pete, about 3 miles north of the Trop.

Well, he actually emailed me about it so I'm sure he's around...and yeah he told me I could find him on fm....I haven't been there lately since I've been so busy lately

it's actually one of the nicer blogs i've seen. a few guys here at work are tweakin' with those things. i don't have any interest in them yet... (i try to stick to Flash if possible) so i'll just rape their minds for the info after they've done all the work :D.

it does have some resizing issues (post titles run into the post dates), but nothing that would be noticed when viewing 800x600+. no one should be running under that anyways... it's just retarded.

Yeah I know my blog falls apart under like 640x480, i tried to use the min-width attribute to keep the div from becoming too small but for some reason it doesn't work...I've heard that min-width is spotty among browsers....I though Safari 1.2 would be able to handle it though...

i design for 1024x768 or better now. If you choose 800x600, start scrollin, but i don't know one person who can't do 1024x768, although i know some people who have good eye sight and choose 800x600 for some odd reason. (PC users, no less)

Yeah but it's nice to play it safe at 800x600....especially since many windows users find 1024x768 too small to read, though if they were smart they'd find the text size prefs and set it up correctly...all you need is a ruler and a freakin' mouse to get it right....

It's smaller, lighter, and more aerodynamic....it's my assumption :) I've seen video of them doing incredibly sharp turns....like 90º at high speed....They're probably more structurally sound with the fuselage/wing design...but I don't know for a fact....I've been trying to look it up :) at least the ejection seat should work if the fly by wire systems fail :)

Oh, I'm not tecnically in Tampa either...used to be though....now I'm in :( Wesley Chapel :(...

Man, I've been getting behind... Class sucks, and takes up way too much time.

Last weekend, I went to this restaurant called The Oasis, that overlooks a local lake (Lake Travis, for you Austinites who know what I'm talking about), and the reason you go to this place is for the sunsets, which is why I had my camera...

I got several good pics, and I'll post them as soon as I'm done post-processing them...

Ok, processing is done, but it's left me with a big question. How do I setup my display, Photoshop, and my Printer so that their color profiles match?

What I see in photoshop is not what I see when I save the images for the web. The images I'm posting are a bit washed out compared to the originals. If anybody knows of a site with a tutorial on how to do this correctly, or if they know themselves, the information would be greatly appreciated.

BTW idkew- I like the seagulls in flight pictures. Very nice.

Anyways, now for the photos (in no particular order)

well, i think the problem is that the color space you are suing in photoshop is better (bigger) than the color space that is used for the web. same thing happens for me. one way around this is to NOT use save for web. just save as a jpeg, and in finder get info on each pict, and click on each thumbnail, and cut it, to reduce file size.

i just use save for web. sucks, but most people's monitors are un-calibrated anyway, so i doubt anyone else sees it the way you do.

and the thrid and the last ones are my fav. great reflections and scattering of light. i bet that was a great sight to see.

<rant>Man do I hear you on the H2 issue....I hate that stupid soccer-mom mentality "oh I gotta have a big car to carry around my kids, their friends and family, and all of their stuff, all while towing my house and using my cell phone." People should be required to have a special license to drive anything other than a car or pick-up truck....I've been nearly forced off the road three times by SUV-driving-women-on-their-cell-phones-who-can't-pay-attention-much-less-see-over-the-steering-wheel.....my friend's dad had his M Roadster (for those of you who don't know what it is, it's basically a Z3 with an M engine and good tires, yeah, it's hellafast and hellanice and it turns like a mofo) run across the hood by an SUV...the guy said he didn't even see him....people who drive SUV's are *******s...if I had an SUV I'd drive like an ******* too....not because I wanted to, but because it's just what happens....they should have special licensing for those behemoths since no one that owns one really has a use for it...they think SUVs are safer but that just means they don't die in a car crash...SUVs have probably made traffic fatalities rise....they're a plague and an annoyance....</rant>

Yup, I literally paid the lens with my sale of the PowerBook. It was a Rev. B 667 w/VGA. It was a nice machine really, I just hardly used it & couldn't justify keeping it for convenience, when I may have used it once every couple weeks. My lens cost $1149, and I sold the Ti for $1100, so I hardly came out of pocket on the deal. I'm already using the lens more than I did the computer.

Get in close, switch your camera to macro mode, set the aperture to the smallest number to create a smaller DOF [background out of focus], and take your shot...

how far away are you when you are taking the shots? what apertures were you trying to use?

I don't really even know what apertures I was trying. Couldn't have been very many, since my camera only has 6 or so settings. I'll try what you said when I get home.

I'll go over the shot details, then explain. I used my sigma 50mm macro, aperture set at f/2.8, 1/250th shutter speed, and I was a few inches away from the bee when I shot it. I was pretty still, so I was able to get a few shot of the bee actually. ;)

f/2.8 is a nice wide aperture, or opening on a lens (although not the largest). The smaller the number, the larger the aperture (or opening on the lens is), the more light is able to get thru the lens for your exposure. In this case, a larger aperture calls for a quicker shutter release, thus the 1/250th sec speed set to balance out the exposure. These settings, or similar, will produce a sharp contrast of subject in focus with backgrounds out of focus.

In opposite, the same thing can happen using a narrower aperture & longer shutter exposure, but can result in needing a tripod depending on what your conditions are. Doing this will also cause more of the content in your frame to be in focus, rather than having emphasis on just your subject or part of the frame.

In this case with the bee, I needed to be quick, so f/2.8 at 1/250th did exactly what I wanted. Depending on what type of camera u have, u can do the thing...but u do need to have manual settings to really have fun with it. :D

capt, i have the s45 also, and you can't do much when it comes to playing with the aperture.

to put it simply:
just set your aperture as low as it can go (2.8 at wide angle, 4.9 at full telephoto). this will open up the hole that lets the light onto the camera's sensor to as large as it can get. you will require less light with this larger opening. i would just set the camera on Av and hope for the best. also- try not to use the flash when shooting a macro. you may need a tripod to hold the camera still if the exposure will take too long.

the limitations of the lens are the only thing i don't like about my s45. wish i could get me a d100 and a few nice lenses, but i chose a 17" powerbook instead.

I dunno, my S50 is the same camera with a 5mp sensor, and I find the aperture controls adequate for the type of camera it is. It's not going to be nearly as flexible as a SLR, and the lens is nothing all that great, but it's manual features are about the same, if not better than those of any other consumer camera.

Capt Underpants, I was a little taken aback at the first post for my piggy picture. Yes, I did take it. They (Wilbur the pig and a lady with a polaroid) were walking around Coffman Union at the U of MN and I was quietly following, looking for a good chance. They went outside and I knew that I could get something good. I went up and said, "instead of me getting my picture with Wilbur, can I take a picture Of him?" They were happy to entertain, Wilbur just did a random pose without me asking, I knelt down, framed it up and snapped a quick shot (I had just realized that I was late for class). I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Thanks though for the kind words. (it's also posted on my site)

It's so funny you should say that! I love Uelsmann and I have two of his books. While not my original inspiration I began to think it looked like his work too! Of course, since I thought that I began to think in that frame of mind. The original inspiration was a person on deviantArt and the finished product (this is a seperate piece AND a backdrop) will have more Uelsmannish features. That's really cool you thought that man. Do you like Uelsmann? I'm hoping to set up a studio one day and do multiple negative prints as well.

Jdar: Thanks for the compliment. That is sort of what I was going for. The actual complete work can be printed pretty huge like poster size +, so hopefully I'll be doing that and hanging it. I'll probably make a custom frame for it and all that jazz. I'll let you guys know when it's finished. The current size of the project is about 230MB. Nice colour and clarity you wouldn't expect from a camera of that size or price point. It's a good thing that the camera wasn't struggling at that altitude since that's getting up there for a lot of electronic equipment.
