View Full Version : How do you fasten your shoes?
Nermal

So since we've got a couple of polls about watches, I thought I might as well reproduce a poll from Slashdot, and see how Mac users compare to Linux geeks
Here was the Slashdot poll:
Best Shoe Fastening Method?
A) Laces, tied each day
B) Laces, tied once and slipped on/off
C) Velcro
D) Loafers/wooden clogs
E) Buckles
F) Snaps/zippers
G) Krazy Glue/duct tape
H) Can't afford shoes
Feel free to pick one of the above, or add your own choice if appropriate (see, we offer more flexible choices than Slashdot) :)

Haha.

I) I wish...might try that someday.
You could probably tell by this and my 'how do you wear your watch' post that I don't like taking things on and off...once they're on it should stay that way! :p :D

I'm currently wearing ankle-length boots with no laces so may I add
N) No laces or fastenings - just slip on.
Otherwise I'm A

I yell at my son for B.
That reminds me I need to get some Shoe Goo(tm) These need a bit of patching

I honestly don't know. I have the butler do it for me, and I never pay attention to how he fastens them.

Duct tape (preferably the kind for taping ducks) is the way to go, except that if you go all the way around the shoe, the sole part wears away too quickly. Sometimes I just glue rubber to the bottoms of my feet. Or tie leaves to them.
I'm sorry... it's 5:20am and I guess I should go to bed now. But I want to be a "regular", not a "member"! And seriously, it's all about the sneakers with the permanently-tied laces. And "not-socks". And ducks. Wow it's like I'm all hopped-up on goofballs or something!

Social pressures and a yearning for acceptance into an order of people, none of whom I have ever met nor intend to meet, draws me to admit that both my left foot and my right foot normally adopt category A as apparel fastening method.
[Please note that I am not sure if that sentence made sense as I have just finished off a 1 litre jug of black coffee]

Usually A, but I've been known to be in the D category with slip on shoes for work and zouri (flip-flops to you) around home.

Outside of work all I ever wear is my Birkenstock sandals, which slip on and off. Snow, rain, sleet, ice. Whatever sandals is IT.
At work I have a pair of work shoes tied up but as soon as I get in the car they come off.
If it was up to me I wouldn't wear any type of footwear at all. I like the feel of the ground under foot.

That's the fun of it! :D
As for me (don't know why I didn't mention this in my original post), I was A up until a few months ago because B didn't really work with the shoes I had. But now I'm B (almost, they came pre-tied). I can't go back to A without buying new shoes because it's not possible to re-tie these ones.

Left foot: A
Right foot: A
Yeah, so they are the same, but I am deeply offended that this poll makes the assumption that both feet must be covered with the same technique. How insensitive can we be? What gives us the right to discriminate against people who have nonmatched shoe techniques, whether by choice (fashion statement), misfortune (one foot in a cast), or unintentional (nerds who don't notice they are wearing one high-heel lace-up boot and one sandal)? We should all be ashamed of ourselves!

Flip flops year round.
People always ask me if my feet get cold when it is freezing outside and I'm in sandals. I don't really notice coldness in my feet anymore. It is not so much that they are numb, but I just don't care whether my feet are cold.

(no socks; I'm a man) If having smelly feet means you're a man, then you can call me Jenny!
Anyways, for my Airwalks (or other similarly styled brand), I just tie them and slip them on and off until they need tying again. For cold/wet days, I have a pair of Winter Magnums from Hi-Tec. Those make it kind of hard not to tie each time, having speed hooks and all. Dress shoes and hi top sneakers require untying to put on, so those fall under the A category too.
B 70% and A 30%

Actually, I think socks are more masculine. Socklessness (how often do you get to use a word like that? :D) is more likely to be a feminine dressing habit, in my opinion.
I hate wearing shoes without socks because it makes your feet reek.
But what I'm really wondering is if anyone here is brave enough to 'fess up to wearing sandals with socks. Eww.

I) Paint shoes on bare feet
Or there's an easier way, just stick both feet in some thick, quick-drying glue (remove them before it dries), then voila! Transparent shoes that protect your feet :)
They're zero-maintenance too because you don't need to remove them before showering or going to bed.
I don't know how safe it is to post that here, because I think macka might try it

I used to laugh at that advert where this gormless-looking balding guy with a comb-over (whom, in his mid-40's, you KNEW wouid still be single), would be standing there in his daft-looking living room, staring at the camera (which was shot in the manner of a 1970's-style advert - complete with scratches and washed-out colouration), as the public service announcer would be talking about cost-cutting in the home...
"Unable to afford to re-carpet your house? Then, just buy TWO squares of carpet, and attach them to the bottom of your feet."
[cut to gormless guy with two big squares of carpet attached to boards, strapped to his feet, whilst doing a silly walk in his lounge, wearing an equally gormless grin and looking extremely proud of his stupid self]
"No matter where you travel in the home, you'll be treading on a wonderfully warm surface."
:p
Believe it or not, it was a McDonalds commercial, pointing out the benefits of how their meals(?!?) are cheap...

B... gotta be B! Oh, and Sketcher's Comfort Walkers (I think that's what they're called) -- no buckles, no laces, no velcro. Just a shoe with a tongue and elastic between the tongue and the side of the shoe... slip 'em on and off. After all, should you really spend that much time on shoes??

A for walking boots (weekends) and dress shoes (meetings with clients)
B for the odd ocassion I wear trainers
and...

<freedom fighter voice>in my opinion, sandals are supposed to be freedom from the restrictions that socks impose. socks are supposed to be in shows, to protect from the insude of the shoe, btu sandals are meant to let you feet be free, but socks don't let it be that way.</freedom fighter voice>
