The search bar "disappeared" from the top right slot when Apple changed over to the current design, it only applies to the store pages, as generally, people want to search just in the store when on the store page, not the entire site, hence moving the search bar.

Laziness (by coders)? Complaints about lack of search (only by american users)? Could be a whole heap of reasons...
