I figured since probably 99.9% of us are looking at a color monitor viewing this, we might want to pay some homage to what got us (partially) to this point.

Anyone on the boards remember getting their first color TV?

Hmm...it's not quite the 50th anniversary. John Logie Baird demonstrated a colour picture in 1925 IIRC.

Television was not an American invention :p

And in 1939, Guillermo González Camarena in Mexico created the first color television and transmission system, obtaining the patent in 1940 in Mexico and the US.

That would be NTSC, right? How much longer did it take them to come up with PAL? Is the USA ever going to switch to PAL? And why on earth does one of the local cable companies use NTSC?

According to this site (http://www.informationheadquarters.com/Television/PAL.shtml), PAL was introduced in 1967.
Will the US ever switch to PAL? Yeah, right after they start driving on the left hand side of the road and start spelling colour (and other words) with a u. BTW, NTSC does stand for 'Not The Same Colour' right? :D

I actually thought it was Never Twice the Same Colour, but close enough :)

my computer takes up so much of my time that when i'm not using it I don't want to look at any screen and therefore don't watch tv really.

Yes, I remember my parents getting their first color TV. It was a real novelty to have a color TV. The first time that I saw color TV was at a friend of my parent house, don't remember the year. But I'm sure that it was on a Saturday night, because we got to watch "Bonanza" in color for the first time. It was like going to the movies at home. My parents was a 20" Zenith Console TV. I can remember coming home from school and seeing it for the first time. I believe it was in the early 60's.
