Still, I can always hope. Nobody offered broadband where I live right now.

Where I'm living now, broadband is widely available - from the cable company and several different DSL providers.

When the President makes speeches like this, I'm afraid I can't take him at face value. I predict that I'll end up paying higher taxes on my existing lines (the "universal service fund" tax) in order to subsidize the program, and the big companies (like Verizon) will use loopholes in the law to force all of the other broadband companies out of business.

So, although people living out in rural areas my be able to get broadband for the first time, I'm going to end up with higher bills and less choice than I do now.

I will be very pleasantly surprised if it happens any other way.

The main control that we have is with our dollar. I we choose lower cost and higher service, it will send a message. That is why I'm considering leaving Earthlink and going wit Comcast.
