I think you can use Ethernet with the new unibody MBs, no?

you should be able to.

i would just straight up ethernet it and copy all the stuff you need to the new MBP.

Will just a plain ethernet cable work?

Yes, that should work fine.

You can also run migration assistant over 802.11 as well I believe.?..but someone else will have to confirm..

Yup, that'll do just fine. Unlike PCs, Macs don't require crossover cables for direct computer-computer file transfers.

Wireless will most likely be unbearably slow, I'd definitely recommend wired ethernet.

to get a direct mirror connect via firewire, put mb in target disk mode, and let migration assistant in mbp do the copying, and the mbp will be the exact same as the mb, once its done

His unibody MB does not have Firewire.

You can use an external drive to back up everything with Time Machine and using restore on the MBP to copy all your files.

It's almost like he wanted to rub it in. :p

yeah i don't recommend going the ip address over airport method.

it will be sooo slow.

i transferred my music collection of 34.98 Gigs from my macbook to my mac mini last week,

and over wireless it estimated 7 hours
over ethernet... 11 minutes

Have heard that this can cause problems, as not only settings and personal files but ALL system files are copied it can mean that the new MBP may think it's a MB... I avoided it when going from my iMac to MB...

I can confirm that the new MB can use ethernet or wireless. I used a standard ethernet cable and it transferred ~160GB in about 3.5 hours.

Exactly, that's why I chose migration assistant over time machine.
