Does Apple have a backing up tool?

I'm new to the imac world and I thought I read somewhere that Apple has an automatic back up system to thwart crashes...is this true?

If not, can anyone recommend an backing up service so I can assure my work will be safe.

If you simply plug an external in that is large enough, time machine will pop up and ask if you want to use it for your backup. Say yes.

If by crashes, you mean the hard drive kicking the bucket. Which happens all too often these days.
