View Full Version : Pinch gesture... zooms too fast in safari 4

I'm trying the new Safari and I love the support for the pinch gesture (coming to Firefox in the next version apparently). Anyhow, I find it difficult to control how quickly the page zooms. Is there any setting to slow the zoom down, i.e. make it less sensitive?

Good call. If we all report as many things as possible it will only make Safari better in the end.

The thing goes crazy when you try to pinch. Really hard/impossible to zoom smoothly.

There's no way to adjust it under the trackpad options?

Same thing. It's annoying. Reported to Apple already.

Thanx folks. I thought maybe it was just my big fingers. I'll report it as a bug too. Report it!!! Thanx for reading and responding.

Man, it zooms from 0-60 in about half a second. It's pretty much unusable for me.

I thought maybe I was just too stupid to use it correctly. Glad I checked here. Report sent!

The pinch zoom in the FireFox beta is perfect but I'm sure the Safari 4 one will get better. I hope they update the interface in the final version of Safari though... it just looks so dated.

Hey, I registered primarily to add that I'm so happy I'm not the only one who has noticed this. Its just ridiculously sensitive. I have posted a bug report too, and hopefully they will fix it.

I just wish Apple would implement the ability to use some of Firefox's plugins. Thats the only thing thats missing for me.

Glad it's not just me. I can't believe they did not find this in pre-beta testing.

Fixed!:)

Me too, Safari 3.;)
I think it has something to do with whole pages and not just the font being resized.

I found that if you select "zoom text only" in the view screen at the top of safari it works much better.

Not trying to be a smart alec, just thought I'd mention the work around for the zoom pinch issue for some of you guys who want to use that... Cmd+ and Cmd- works great for me.

I just discovered that Cmd-0 (zero) will reset Safari to the default size. I know it doesn't solve the problem of the over-zealous zoom, but it saves me 2 minutes trying to get things back to normal after accidentally pinching while browsing.

Looking forward with the rest of you to a bug fix on this one!

I could never get back to the "default" view after zooming, it would always be to big or to small. Always had to restart Safari. Thanks for the tip!!

For those who need an instant reset from Safari's zoom and don't want to hit command+0, can turn to William Henderson's MultiClutch (http://wcrawford.org/2008/02/28/everytime-i-think-about-you-i-touch-my-cell/). It's a very simple and powerful freeware app that enables users to assign a gesture to an application menu (much like Apple's keyboard shortcut assign system window).

Even though it's been in Beta for quite some time now, I've been using it with Firefox 3.0 without any problems, and I just started using it for Safari 4 as well. I've set it to reset the zoom using a swipe down gesture (3 fingers down), and it works perfectly.

I hope this helps.

i have the same problem and its so annoying, everytime i gotta press cmd-0.
i also notice when u open lotsa tabs, upwards of 20, it tends to crash. in camino or firefox i have no problems. also when i hit upwards of 10 tabs i see the spinning beachball of death very often...

i always swiped it real fast and it seemed to work better but i have always been kinda let down that the feature never really worked all that well.

I've found a nicer solution using MultiClutch... just map zoom in/zoom out in Safari to the Cmd-+/Cmd-- (Zoom shortcuts). It makes each pinch only zoom once, no more crazy zooming!

I've done the same and it works perfectly, you're right.
