Dow Jones Newswires (via CNN Money (http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200902251413DOWJONESDJONLINE000706_FORTUNE5.htm)) provides a recap of Apple's annual shareholder meeting held today on the company's campus in Cupertino, the first such meeting without Steve Jobs present since his return to the company in 1997. At the meeting, shareholders voted to reelect the entire Board of Directors and voted down four proposals made by shareholders but opposed by the Board of Directors.Shareholders also defeated proposals that would have given them a say on executive compensation, would have required Apple to disclose more about corporate political donations and its carbon footprint, and would have called for universal health care.In response to questions about the health of Jobs, the Associated Press reports (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gRZqwa1AoCbIHQZXuvbjGL36LAvQD96IQ0VG0) that there are no changes in his plans to return to the company in June.Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs still expects to return from his medical leave at the end of June, according to an Apple director who responded to an investor at the company's annual shareholder meeting Wednesday.
The investor had pressed for details about when the board of directors knew Jobs planned to step away from his daily duties. Apple director Arthur Levinson responded only by saying that since Jobs announced Jan. 14 that he needed to go on leave, "nothing has changed."Attendees also participated in a singing of "Happy Birthday" to the absent CEO, who celebrated his 54th birthday yesterday (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/02/24/happy-birthday-to-macrumors-and-steve-jobs/).
CNBC's Jim Goldman had hoped to live blog from the meeting, but Apple banned all communication devices (http://www.cnbc.com/id/29388727) from the meeting hall. Fortune, however, republished reports (http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2009/02/25/a-peek-inside-apples-shareholders-meeting/) from two investors who were able to sneak wireless devices into the room.

I don't understand, is this just out of formality, or did some investors really want to kick the entire board out while Apple is still making them money?

They have to be reelected every year. It's a formal procedure.

I wonder how many of these shareholders actually show up to the meeting.

Simply put, regardless of it being our business or not, I don't really believe anything Apple says in regards to Jobs's health. Nothing else to say really, I just don't have faith in Apple's responses to those questions.

Since Apple put all it's effort into handhelds and laptops last year, and it's desktops are now all laughably out of date, I expected some major updates to the Desktop lineup this January.
I wonder if there was any discussion about Apple's apparent lack of interest in the desktop market at the shareholders' meeting.

hear hear, the lack of updates to the mac pro and the mini lines are troubling at best. i thought one of the reasons for the intel switch was that they could make a better effort of staying fresh and competitive with their offerings. these two lines have been waiting for a refresh longer than we had to wait in the PPC days. it's getting pretty ridiculous. If anything, at least lower the prices over time, i believe the E5462 has come down something like $200-250 at least since its introduction. paying $2800 for a previous-generation chip tech is pretty lousy these days.

I doubt that it's a publicity stunt, but if Steve feels well enough and if the product is groundbreaking enough, I think shareholders would be very pleased to see him give a presentation in June. I think Steve, himself, would be pleased to be back on stage giving a presentation. It is his company, after all.

Never mind the f*!!!!g singing, they should concentrate on bringing some products to Market! Apple may be worth billions but logic dictates that if they had a current desktop and monitor offering, they might make more! Build it and they will buy!
To be honest, I'm fed up with Apple ignoring it's existing base of customers and today, after years of mac use, priced up a Dell XPS! Shock horror yes, but £1500 buys a 2.66 i7 quad core, 6gb, 1TB HDD, TWIN 512MB NVIDIA and a 24" display. Now I of all people know the benefits of mac os and iLife etc etc ... But even those caveats don't make for what I'm sure would be at least a £500 premium ... That's if Apple could ever squeeze all that in an iMac ... and would!
Let's wait and see if how Apple can surprise us SOON (I doubt unfortunately!)

Have you ever used an XPS with Vista? If you had, you'd gladly go back to OSX ... it's not only about the specs.
One guy in my lab has an XPS notebook and a just bought a MacBook. The MB starts faster from totally off than his does resuming windows.
We found that I can ... swipe into the building, walk to my office, take off my jacket, take teh MB out of the bag and start using a Word document faster than he can resume Vista. LOL.

Well that explains why we haven't seen any new hardware lately. Why mess with engineering expense when you have money like that and people keep buying?
Apple is still doing great even with lengthening out their product cycles. There is no reason to rush things to market when you are in their position. I am not saying that it is the right thing to do, but if you are trying to make money during an economic downturn that is one way to do it.

Its almost $30 billion, Apple can earn $2 billion interest per year if they want to. Net income for 2008 was $4.8 billion, is this with or without there interest?
Seems like a good amount of cash to spend some time for.

I'm sure it is not random. I don't know why he or anyone else could have put such a strict time table on his recovery. Who knows when he will be feeling better. But "5 months" picked as an arbitrary number seems kinda strange.
I wouldn't call it a publicity stunt at all (like another poster called it), but he just wants to be back to announce the new iPhone or Snow Leopard. Seems like a reasonable goal to me.

So does the cynicism.
Not to the same extent as the Kool Aid. This thread for example, I would guess it is about 3 to 1 people who blindly believe what Apple says (or have impossible super-human expectations for the company) versus those that question what Apple says.
For example, I saw only one post that questioned SJ's return in June... versus well more than 3 that expect it.
I am of the skeptical nature. Apple has not proved that they are in any way reliable when reporting on SJs health. I wish no ill of anyone, but I do not believe you will see him in the CEO chair again.

Only you have to admit that Apple is becoming more bizarre then MS and that says a lot when you think back to some of the things Ballmer has said or done.

Anyways, the shareholders seem like a very sheepish bunch; they'll follow along with whatever the Supreme Soviet, err, Apple's Board of Directors say.
Any issues they may have will be swept aside in June when General Secretary Jobs returns from his cold.

No one notices or comments on the fact that the shareholders propositions that were opposed by the board of directors... all revolve around keeping them honest?
1. executive compensation limits - shot down (its "your" money..except not, its really our money)
2. political donation disclosure - who are you lobbying for and why (something shareholders should be aware of, if they are not, then its a secret and for bad reason)
3. carbon footprint - what a joke, they laughed this one off remembering who it is asking such a thing...silly people who believe nutbags like al gore.
4. universal health care - probably the number one thing keeping people alive past 40 today is health care, and yet we can barely maintain it.

Apple has gotten more bizarre as the NSA and Homeland security have lost interest in using PC's to spy on people, they are more interested in the innovative ways that Apple can come up with for people to volunteer all of their personal info and lifestyle on a regular basis. Less work.

I don't think you can realistically expect any board of directors to vote for rules that would potentially limit their own pay.... When this sort of thing does happen, it's typically brought about by the company getting hit with a load of bad publicity about what they pay their executives. Then the CEO spearheads the move to vote in some kind of limitation, to appease the public.
Put yourself in their shoes for a minute. If you were on the board of a company doing far better than average in the economic climate, and someone asked you to voluntarily place a cap on your pay, would YOU eagerly do it? I think not....
Now, #2? I think it would have definitely been good to see them pass that one. If companies are making political donations, customers should be able to easily obtain that info and use it as part of their purchasing decisions. Again though, I'm not surprised the board would be too "chicken" to agree to that. (They probably realize that releasing such information would do Apple more harm than good in sales figures. Big corporations and the financial sector generally hasn't adopted Macs, and they'd be the ones less likely to do so if they saw how many liberal political agendas Apple probably sent donations to.)
IMHO, #3 and #4 are both a joke. You want Apple to provide "universal health care" to all of its employees? What, exactly, does that mean? They could cover 100% of their medical expenses? They should ensure everyone employed there has the option to be on an insurance policy? I'm pretty sure if you're employed at Apple, you probably make a salary sufficient to handle buying your own individual health ins. plan, if you desired -- and I'm also sure their current setup offers medical benefits in line with other companies of their type.

I do agree.
It was a stupid birthday song for a guy who is very sick and couldn't be there. Stop all this Big Brother crap.

Cupertino is acquiring a surreal, almost Jonestown feeling about it.
You have no clue of what you are talking about. It's borderline offensive if you know anything about the history of Jonestown. Apple is a computer company that happens to have a large base of loyal customers. Nothing more.

They are, but you generally have to report a post if you believe it violates the posting rules.

I propose a toast.
Too Steve!
Too Steve? Whom else are you proposing a toast to?
BTW, loved that clip from Office Space. Would you folks believe I've actually never seen it? I started looking at the other clips of it on YouTube and it's a definite future rental for me.

Jobs is old and tired. Give someone younger a change. Apple needs new inspiration and a change of direction from its fascist ways.
