I have a very extensive collection of artists from all over the states, I just have been really diggin what has been coming out of Northern California in the last couple of months. Anyone else into hip hop post some of your favorite artist of current days and what has been in your rotation lately. Currently I'm really liking the Newest release from Messy Marv, "Cake & Ice Cream, Vol. 2". Also have been playing Bueno "Maloof Money", PSD "A Star Iz Born", & Yay Boyz Present "Got Purp? Vol. 2"... Im counting down the days till the new MF DOOM (all caps, lol) album. I've got very little time for gun talk in hip-hop now, so its mostly cats like Lupe, Mos, Common, The legendary Roots Crew, Slum, Talib, MF DOOM, ATCQ and OutKast. You know, if they're original and have a message, then im feeling them.

Anyone ever heard of Rasheda?? I guess she's the dirty south queen. I bought one of her albums and it's pretty good. She's worked with quite a few other rappers as well so the songs have a really cool sound.

Oh and one of her songs was in that Paul Blart movie. LOL

recently i keep bumping paper trail. i think i enjoy at least 10-11 songs on that cd, and that almost never happens unless it's a concept album.

i was a little upset that the rap grammy went to lil wayne though. tha carter iii was good/alright but definitely not better than paper trail, nas' "untitled", american gangster, or the cool. i think grammy voters were thinking "hmm, the youngins like lil wayne, mrs. officer has that cool and hip siren chorus, yup, got my vote".

I am not a big fan of Lil Wayne. His Carter 1 & 2 albums were good but Carter 3 got to be the same old stuff "I'm the best rapper alive". Gets annoying.

I actually though Tha Carter III was a great album. There were a few songs on there like Mrs. Officer and the like that weren't that great, but the rest I thought were very good. I have been also listening to lupe fiasco a little and he's really growing on me, pretty good stuff.

O, I forgot to mention Tech N9NE. I've only heard a few of their songs (Caribou Lou), but not bad.

I also like Girl Talk, it's interesting hearing all those songs mixed together.

These are my favorite artists in order. I can't really split up groups, so I put the groups in as "individuals" and ordered the group individuals in my favorite order. D-Block Next Generation is really a few different groups (Team Arliss, 354, and more) and are technically part of D-Block, but the LOX are in a different class lol. St.Raw is definitely close though.

Jay-Z, Biggie, Nas,

(Jadakiss, Styles P, Sheek Louch, L.O.X., D-Block)

(St.Raw, Bully, Trav, Snyp Life, Bucky, Team Arliss, 354, D-Block Next Generation)

Papoose, J-Hood, Cassidy, Beanie Sigel, (Havoc, Prodigy, Mobb Deep), Freeway, and early 50 cent

Mercy, can people talk about hip hop without always bringing up this or that rapper who ain't doing ******. I mean it's nice to read through and see some new names mentioned. Can we stop talking about Pac and Biggie and talk about MCs with albums and new material coming out this year? And discuss some contemporary albums.

People bring up Pac like rap started in the 90s. The music is bigger than one performer.

how can you say that? Tupac and bggie were the heart and soul of rap in the 90's. When both of them died part of hip hop died with them. There is no rapper out there that could beat tupac. The new rap that's coming out is crap, the rappers today(besides NaS)don't put there heart and soul into their music anymore, rap has become too commercialized no a days, nobody seems unique

Lol, you give him to much credit. Rap/Hip Hop was here before them and it will continue to be here long after they died.

There were dozens of other artist in the 90's other than Tupac. He was just mainstream and happened to die tragically.

There were a handful of rappers in the early to mid 90's that were just as influential to the hip hop community as a whole, than just Tupac.

Pharcyde, Del the Funky Homosapien, Souls of Mischief, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and the list goes on and on.

blasphemy. tupac and biggie are in the upper echelon according to most. very few current artists are on the same level, and have the same influence.

not saying the pharcyde, or de la, or tribe have no influence at all (they are some of my favorites), but you're basically saying meh, tupac, whatever, if he didn't die no one would remember him.

I appreciated his poetry much more than I did his music, don't get me wrong he was a great writer. He had passion for his writing, I don't disagree there. He wanted to be an actor, that is what he wanted to be famous for. He was a martyr for his genre of gangster rap, plain and simple. That is what made him an iconic symbol for his genre.

I was under the impression this thread was in regards to hip hop, not just rap.

He was considered in the upper echelon by the music industry, because he was a money maker.

So what if they're in the upper echelon?

There's artists right now out there right now trying to claw their way into the lower echelon but hip hop fans are still throwing on Biggie and 2Pac records talking about the good ol' days before hip hop sold out. So what? Get over it. People still putting their hearts on records speaking the truth as they see it. Other people will always be using hip hop to make money. Can't change that. How's the music supposed to go forward if all it's doin is looking back.

I mean here comes a hip hop thread and we're talking about 2Pac and Biggie. Again. They're great. No one says they aren't. But we don't have to genuflect at the altar of Pac and Biggie everytime we talk about hip hop. No disrespect but they're dead. Let's move on.

For me hip-hop has been caught out during the whole presidential election/credit crunch (recession). Hip-hop cared about the issues in the 80s, turned angry in the 90s and just gave up in the 2000s. however with a black person running for the top job, all of a sudden every drug dealers favourite rapper was talking politics and about the REAL issues that affect the black community...if only for 5 minutes. People are losing jobs/homes left, right and centre yet rappers still scream about there ice/cars/clothes/[........]place whichever alcoholic beverage they're endorsing in the brackets provided. If you love Hip-hop then you have either: Put up with it, stopped buying, a combination of the two or been forced underground like (i'd be willing to guess) most of us. Disco died because it did not reflect what was happening in the real world, outside of the club. There was huge social unrest in the 70s and early 80s and all disco could muster was another party-time, feel good record. Now we're in a depression and Hip-hop is making all the same mistakes that disco did.

Tupac and Biggie were extremely talented and a major influence on hip-hop, can't deny that. I just rarely ever find myself listening to either of them anymore cause there's so much amazing underground hip-hop that has come out over the past several years. There are other artists than just Nas who can rival Tupac, MF Doom and Immortal Technique come to mind whenever talking about talented rappers and I'm sure they would put up a good fight with Tupac or Biggie in a freestyle battle. Real hip-hop is NOT dead, it just moved to the underground, stuff on the billboard charts is ******** these days.

I found a new app for my phone called iPhone called iheartradio, I'm freaking loving it. I moved to San Diego not to long ago, originally from the bay area. This radio station from about 6~7 to about 10 ( I think) plays old school, then they bring it back at 11 or 12 noon.

It's 12:26PM pst right now and for the past 20 or so minutes they've been playing 80's to early 90's rap, feeling hella nastolgic right now. The station is 106.1 Kmel, when mind master is on the tables in the morning with radio personality chuy gomez, it's just all fun.

106.1 Kmel mornings and noon pst time, they'll throw you back and make you remember why you got into hip hop.

If you want to find them, they're located in San Francisco, CA on iheartradio app.

Scarface is unreal. I have always been a bit impartial to Bay Area Hip Hop. Too Short more specifically.

Gotta agree with ya there... Some 1 mentioned on page 2 of the thread that they have an extensive hip hop collection "16,000 track in my itunes". Well I must have an outrageous collection because my hip hop section of my itunes has over 28,000 track in it and over 16,000 of them are Bay area from classics to the most recent artists like Rydah J. Klyde & The Jacka (from the Mob Figaz). My whole itunes library boasts over 39,000 track as of right now.... I'm kinda a music addict. :D

Independent Lens had a good show on hip hop this week. It's really sad to see what has happened to it. There used to be a point and time when it was all about thought and observations. Now it's about ass, 22" rims, and wordplays with no point. You really have to sift through the tons of garbage (many are in the top 50) just to find the real art. I hope that hip hop really falls so it can get back to its roots.

I guess I should branch out of the 80s with my taste in hip hop. I got into the old school with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kurtis Blow, and Whodini through my university's music collection. I also like Run DMC and the Beastie Boys. All the gangsta rap and the culture associated with it turned me off from newer hip hop. The only newer rap I've been able to listen to is Jurassic 5's What's Golden and Bone Thug's Tha Crossroads.

Haha glad to see so many good acts listed here and not just '50 cent' garbage!! I have a wide range of artists too and got to see Public Enemy live when they came to the UK.
As for my favourites its not easy to choose. Favourite group would be Public Enemy without a doubt though! I still cant listen to Welcome to the Terrordome without feeling the anger of Chuck D's lyrics. Favourite solo artist is also hard. Back in the day i would have said Ice Cube. His first few albums are amongst the best ever made in my opinion. His new stuff is way below what he used to be capable of though.
Love Ras Kass and Redman seems to release album after album and has never lost his funky rhyme delivery. Now if your talking about straight up lyricists than Canibus would have to be near the top for me. Sometimes when i listen to his freestyles and rhymes i laugh because its so good i cant cope!!
Chino XL has some wicked lines too. And who could forget mighty Immortal Technique who i would probably place in the top 5 lyricists along with Canibus, Big L and Killah Priest :D

Good hip hop is about the emcee and what they have to say. The backing track is just a tool to help them deliver their message. Thats how it used to be. Nowadays mainstream hip hop is like pop music. ACTUALLY hip-hop started as a DJ act with the emcee as the hype man. DJs would mix and match beats together while the emcee's got the crowd involved. it wasn't until Melle Mel and people like Afrika Bambaataa that emcees became the main attraction.

Yes thats how it started but it was still in its infancy at this point. Im talking about once it started taking off with Run-DMC and so on. Yes thats how it started but it was still in its infancy at this point. Im talking about once it started taking off with Run-DMC and so on. truth truth. a lot of it has to deal with the majority of people who listen to the music are retarded and probably respond highly to bells and whistles.

Lol never heard of that one. What the hell is going on with this dude? I bought the offering and loved it to death (really, really, really great album) and then not too long after came Behind The Stained Glass and then a few months after came I Killed The Devil Last Night. I'm guessing this joint came in between those two? He should chill, I'm losing interest cause he dropping to much stuff too quickly.

ANYWAY, for ANYONE who loves and supports REAL new york hiphop buy the new CORMEGA album Born And Raised. It's amazing for real. Dopest album in a long time by far. I was disappointed at first due to me having anticipated it for 7 years, but now I cant turn it off. 40 listens and it came out Oct. 20th. Check it out and buy it. If anyone deserves sales it's this guy, always stayin true to the fans and what we want. Perfect lyrics. Producer lineup? Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Ayatollah, Easy Moe Bee, Havoc, Nottz among others. This is HOW ITS SUPPOSED TO BE DONE, I guarantee it!

I recently bought Ill Pill Productions - Time Slips Away and can't stop playing it all the way through.

The new Blue Scholars EP OOF! is pretty good to, it has some Hawaiian themes to it.

Sabzi (DJ for Blue Scholars and Common Market) recently put out a Jawaiian mixtape as well under the name Sabzi Selectah that I keep playing over and over.

Yeah I knew that as soon as I heard Aesop Rock was the producer.

He has more of that Def Jux sound, whereas Felt and Felt 2 were more playfully produced by Grouch and Ant. Murs and Slug are always funny and playful, so I'm a little nervous Aesop Rock will make them too serious with his sound. I'm sure it will be terrific, though.

I remember listening to Aesop Rock when first came out (Appleseed, Labor Day, etc), but not these last few years. Actually, I've been out of the hip-hop loop for the last few years, but always make sure to know when Rhymesayers has something new out.

According to the interviews, Aes would make them work extremely hard on lyrics (which is extremely important obviously).. I just hope it doesn't completely shift the album.

I have most of Aesop's stuff, I don't listen to him a ton though. So I'm not sure.

like you said, i'm sure it will be a great album.

one of the greatest underdogs, no joke. I know album of the year means a lot, but Im not the type of dude who's runnin around calling every decent banger a classic like many people tend to do this days. This right here is the realness, and when I see ya say"Who?" I owe it to ya as a fellow hiphop fan to check it out :) IMO he's the best out of QB and Im a huge nas fan. in fact their beef was mad entertaining although a collab would be twice as entertaining. check for older tracks such as "R U my n....", "american beauty"(subliminal nas diss), "Thun n Kicko" with Prodigy, The Saga, Therapy (this track still gives me goosebumps after so many years. pure poetry) and from his new album just to mention one dope track "Girl", incredible subliminal track about coke and his dealin days

Cormega is one of my favorites. No one spits like him when it comes to the gritty. "You was a dead man walking...now you a live n///// layin in the coffin"

Word i agree. man i aint seen many mega fans outside of legalhustle.net haha, so thats cool. it took him 7 years to drop another solo and i cant believe im saying it, but it was well worth the wait. realest hiphop out, period.

True. Well, there are 6.8 billion people on the earth. It's fair to assume that 100s of millions of us are engaging in creating music. I would even go so far as to say that millions of us are specifically creating hip-hop.

So, personally, I prefer to not make a broad statement like I "hate" a certain genre of music. You never know what you might find out there.

Atmosphere is brilliant, I love his music. Especially some of his more relaxed stuff, such as Sunshine, or Yesterday.

I'm a pretty big fan of Hip Hop, not quite sure what problem the world has with it. Some names off the top of my head - Cypress Hill, Jay-Z, Wu-Tang, Method Man, MF Doom, Flo Rida and Ego G. I love Pete Rock and CL Smooth, I think they both have amazing talent - Pete Rock at producing and CL at writing. My favourite hip hop album is the Underground Classics compilation Pete Rock threw together, love every song on there.

I meant the filming of the video (obviously different than recording the actual track), the camera never leaves Sean's face. ;)

I always uncheck them in iTunes. The only ones i think are funny are the funky uncles from Redmans first album.

100% in agreement. The only skits I listen to are on Redman's first album and Wu-Tang's 36 Chambers. Everybody else blows.

Ah, less impressed... ;) Still a quality track, and I really like the simplicity of the video, they way the camera unfocuses whenever he stops singing and focuses back in at the right time when he starts again, and the lighting is really cool too.

I knew that is what I wanted to do when I first heard Sequence and Sugar Hill and definitely can't forget the originators like Blowfly, James Brown, Dolomite. I have been rapping, singing, writing and dropping beats since I was around 10, started out as a freestyler in those days. Then at age 12 I put the pen to a pad. I like music all the way around and you have to be able to do that as a rapper; that way you never run out of ideas. Since I am 2 years away from 40; I have gotten more into the producing side. So I like Midwest, West, East, South, I have even heard some international stuff that was off da chain. My main thing about music has always been if the person has deep lyrical flow: Big Daddy Kane, Rakim the greatest, The Game, Ice Cube, E-40, NAS, X-Clan, BDP, of course Pac and Big, could relate to them cause that was time I was hustling in the streets. It has to get beyond a beat for me, you have to say something that makes me think. :apple:

Good to see a couple you guys with Wiz Khalifa on your lists. He's from my city. Even better is that he's actually pretty damn good.

Yea man, I've been listening to Wiz since 08.
"Say yea" was a dope track, and that's initally why I started liking him. I have to admit that I didn't think he was going to be as good as he has been so far. Deal or No Deal was a pretty nice album and Burn after Rolling was a sick mixtape. I listen to "this plane" on a daily basis, it motivates me. Wiz and Currensy are so awesome when they do collaborations.

Currently, in hot rotation, the latest "How I Got Over"-album from The Roots. It is simply awesome.

I went to see them live in manchester a couple of years ago. Was so epic haha! I was so excited about it that when i saw leaflets in my then local hairdressers promoting the concert, i picked up about 50 and stood in the centre of town handing them out like i was one of their street team :D :o

Just because it's old doesn't mean it's better than some of the newer stuff. There are 30+ years of evolution in Hip-Hop with a great mesh of differentiators and styles. The music is changing with the times and culture, we can either accept it or bemoan it. :D
