Mini Display port to VGA Adapter

Hi everyone,

I have just read some of the comments on the adapter that is sold in apple store australia: http://store.apple.com/au/product/MB572Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MjkyNjI0MA

The weird thing is so many people complains about this... Is this really that bad?

By the way does anyone knows where to buy this adapter in Australia that is cheaper than this? The adapter is quite expensive actually... Compare to the other adapters prices..

I use mine whenever I'm at home which is daily and I'm yet to have any type of problem with it.

No problems with the MDP > VGA adapter here either. I use it daily to connect the AluBook to a few different LCD's depending on where I'm at that day...

I had this for a couple of days, but my beef with it was the quality of the image.
However, I used it with 5 different monitors and never had a problem connecting to them.

I use it with my mb and it works well...just didnt do well with Final Cut express, but I dont know if that was because of my RAM only being 2gb or the adapter not being designed for that.

Mine never had problem recognizing displays but my screen goes black for a second every odd time. Anybody else getting that problem on MR, there's a ton of people getting that problem on the apple board.

FWIW that is also happening with the miniDP->DVI adapter, even with Apple's own displays. In both cases it seems to be only when the external monitor is set to a higher resolution than the internal, which of course is most of the time. Must be some sort of a driver issue. Apple issued a driver update that only made things worse, and the promptly withdrew it.

The only issues I had with it was with my Samsung LCD TV. It worked fine with my little 17" Dell LCD monitors.

This made it unusable, and I went with MDP-->DVI-->HDMI instead.

On the other hand this adapter is really hard to find. No ebay stores sell this (at least in Australia). I think AU$45 is a little bit expensive.

It's an accessory made by/sold by apple, what do you expect? :p

I used it on two projectors ... worked fine. Tested it on a 24" Dell LCD ( 2405 FPW ) and it worked fine there too ...

Was a bit afraid buying it as many people on forums were complaining.

Looks like most of the complaints came from people who had higher resolutions than the built in screen

I have one, and I think for what it is it isn't too bad. If you're planning on using it everyday, I would imagine it would be best to go for a DVI option. I link mine up occasionally to my Samsung 22", but I wouldn't think of running it the whole time off it as the quality is too low. It's not bad for viewing films or other fullscreen applications, but I wouldnt bother with it for precision work.

If it helps, I'm going to find some way to go DVI as I'm not satisfied, but then again I'm all about quality, and I didn't buy the DP-VGA, someone gave it to me.

I'm not too worried about quality now... What I'm going to do is just to do presentations, I would have to present so many presentations this year because I'm going to so many conferences (and most of them uses VGA with their projectors).

Asked people from dicksmith and Jb hi fi today. They're all out of stock. They ask me if I want them to order it online and I told them if that's the case I could do that by myself.

I am also interested in this issue. Quick question though: For a 19" widescreen Acer, would the DVI or VGA adapter be better? Also, is there anywhere in the US where I could get one cheaper than $30?

If you can get DVI, do. It will nearly always be better. The only reason for getting a VGA is for use with a projector that only supports VGA input.

my lecture theaters and so many other presentation projectors uses VGA only though... =( bad luck.
