Hi

I have seen a number of MBA 1.6 with HDD and the 9C90 screen and several MBA 1.86 SSD with the 9C9A.
However not the other way around. So I am curious does only the 1.6 come with 9C90 and only 1.86 with the 9C9A?
This is for Rev B only!

Hence my poll.

Thanks

P.S. I have seen this pattern at an Apple store, 2 Best Buys and Micro Center following this pattern plus one at Starbucks. So I am starting to think it is more than a coincidence.

Maybe a retarded question, but:
How do you tell?

I wonder if that is why I have seen so many rev B MBAs with no lines... I have seen seven with no lines. All but one have been 1.86 GHz with SSD. The other one was a 1.6 GHz with SSD. And the one I saw with lines was in an Apple Store (being returned) and was a 1.6 GHz with HDD.

You should probably tell people rev B MBAs... but will probably have rev A owners post their results anyways.

Thanks for pointing out that I missed that this is for rev B!

For those who dont know how to find it do this:
1) Go to System preferences
2) Choose Display
3) Choose Color
4) Open Profile
5) Scroll down to the end
6) Click on second last line that says display make and model and below you will find the modell number.
All seem to be made by manufacturer 610 (guess that is LG)

Hi.

What about the people with a 1,6 Rev.B with SSD?

They are not reflected in your poll.

That would be a 9C9A for me.

Cheers

Don't think I can change the poll now so please use the 1.8 SSD if you 1.6 SSD.

Your 9C9A with 1.6 SSD confirms my theory so far that the SSD variant seems to mostly have the 9C9A screen.

Are you happy with yours?

From what I have seen, all of them have the lines but the 9C90 is way better than the 9C9A out of the box with extremely faint lines than are way harder to notice compared to the others.

Hi.

If I'm happy with my MBA? You mean besides the heat issues? ;-)

I have to admit that I don't have thin white lines (haven't looked for them), but one big one in the middle of the screen. (where the keyboard ends)

This big white line is from pressure and I had the same problem with my Rev. A.

Apple needs to replace my display again. I'm traveling quite a bit and apparently the display is constantly pressing on the aluminum just underneath the space key.

Anyway: I put my vote on 1,6 9C9A, though I have the SSD...

Sorry for that.

Cheers

I am on my 2nd MBA as I returned the first hoping to get a line-free one (I didn't...) anyhow, they were both 1.6 HDD and the first had 9C90 and the one I am on now 9C9A. The first was week 04/09 and this one, 50/08 (interesting stock rotation there...)

That's because it's vastly superior to the cheap 9C90 they throw in those cheap 1.6/HDD versions.;)

No lines, crisp & bright.

I have 1.6Ghz 120GB Rev B and screen model is 9C90. I can see a thin dark line. What I can do now? The apple store change the MBA or fix it?

9C8F is a new model I have not seen or heard about before. What is the manufacturer date on that one? Maybe they finally have started to switch to a better screen?!

Thanks

Hi,

I am currently in Taipei and just checked an Apple retailer store. They had a MBA with screen model 9C8F. It was the first MBA 2nd generation screen out of 8 I have seen that was flawless without lines. MBA was 1.6 model with 120 GB harddrive, serial number was W89031QF22E.

I just remembered that i have seen this screen model on a rev A model before they ran out. this is great news! They are finally starting to use the excellent screen from Rev A again. i wonder how long before this model will show up more standard so that is the screen I get when i place my order from Amazon?

Anyone else remeber this screen on their Rev A?

W8 = China

03 = week 3

You can post the first letter of your serial number followed by four numbers so we can tell :)

Just bought a rev B direct from Apple Store (online) Europe-based.

1.6 HDD...

Week 5, 2009 build...

Screen is a 9C90...

And guess what?

Yep, lines. Faint, not the worst I've seen, but there nonetheless :(

You'll soon not notice them, just enjoy your new MBA!

Thanks I intend to. But it's not quite a case of ignorance is bliss, as I saw the problem long before I read about it here at MR. Plus my eyes see them even if I'm not looking for them.

Doesn't ruin my experience, just annoying knowing that 'perfect' MBA screens DO exist out there, and that Apple are clearly tinkering with screen types shipping whilst stonewalling the issue officially. It's the principle that annoys me more than anything, it is a substandard manufacturing defect whichever way you look at it.

I for one would be happy with some acknowledgment and offer to exchange or credit rebate. But I'm not holding my breath.

Just wait until the screens are all coming out new without lines, then return your MBA under warranty for a new screen.

I hope so. But I don't think they gonna call back our MBA for replacing display because they told that it is a specification.

No, they won't do a recall, but if you can convince the Genius you have a faulty screen, by comparing it to the 'new' ones in the store he may be convinced to swap the screen out under warranty. I replaced my first Rev.B MBA this way, but then the 2nd was the same so I gave up.

Veinticinco
Mar 2, 2009, 05:15 PM
Why would they swapout a screen if it is a known or at least acknowledged issue? Surely, a replacement would be more appropriate.

If an ASG accepted my screen had a problem and then said "no worries, hand it over, we'll crack it apart and install a new screen which may or may not have the same issue to a lesser or greater extent", I wouldn't exactly be overly enthusiastic!

I think I'll call Apple tomorrow and see what the lovely folks in Cork have to say/offer.

could someone go over how the screens differ from each other spec wise?

Veinticinco
Mar 3, 2009, 06:28 PM
I called Apple Store Europe early this morning, obviously rerouted to the US judging by the accent of the guy I spoke to.

First off, he was immediately sympathetic and after I described the issue, acknowledged he knew what I was talking about, and that I was within my rights to not accept it. No arguments, not stonewalling, just 'here are your options sir'....

1. REPLACEMENT. Return the MBA - pickup by courier, wait a couple of days to be returned to Apple, then a day to be checked and a replacement sent out - another 3-5 working days. A week or so without the MBA. I explained I was using it for work and could not be without it for a week (not strictly true as I have perfectly capable standby machines but that's not relevant to my complaint), so he then went onto option 2....

2. HUSH MONEY. Yes, the phrase was actually used. Ok the context was more "I don't want to seem like we're offering hush money here but we want you to be happy and so if you feel you can overlook this issue, since you placed a large order we'd be willing to give you €60 back bringing your MBA under XXXX". I was a bit taken aback. Not at the paltry 'goodwill' but at mere suggestion of it. I said, look it may not be a major issue but the fact remains there's MBAs out there without this fault so it IS a defect. What about option 3 then?

3. RETURN TO APPLE RETAIL STORE. I asked as I could then get an ASG to open the box and check I'm happy. Point blank refused!!! Retail Stores are completely separate...blah blah blah......you can't do it, please don't even try...wasting your time....etc.

So, massively annoyed, I got him to confirm the 14-day cooling-off/unhappy/return period and said I'd think about it.

Plan B then - will call again tomorrow a little later in the day CET (i.e. once the rerouting of calls ends), and see if I get the same response from my brethren down in Cork.

If Apple has started to use the new screen 9C8F, it might not have reached SSD-models. In Taipei I have seen as well one 1.86/SSD MBA with lines, produced in third week of this year. We did not went through the whole startup so I can't report on the exact screen model. But it looked like all the 9C90 and 9C9A I had seen before.
