I'd like to find some good, soothing, lounge-style music. The type of thing you'd hear at a high-class lounge or bar somewhere. I'd prefer the songs to not have lyrics, or if any, very minimal and soft. Basically I just want some really good background noise but not something you have to pay attention to. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I like this for when I'm just trying to relax. Just piano, that's it.

That is good, but I'd also like a few more instruments for some variety.

For instrument only

Duke Ellington
Billie Holliday
Glen Miller Orchestra
Most any 1950's or earlier Jazz (pretty much any Jazz after the 50's is horrendous, especially modern stuff that has no smooth flow)

The Lounge music I listen to involves singing so it is tough to give more examples. If I want to listen to instruments only I go for Baroque, Classical or Impressionist era.

Well I can be open to suggestions-what lounge music do you listen to (singing or not)?

So... I downloaded some of your suggestions, and thanks! Furthermore... after listening to it a bit, I realize, I do need some lyrics. Just instruments gets boring after a while, :) So... any more suggestions? Thanks!

Ahmad Jamal. You can't get any better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qc3VaXtW5M

If you are a purist, then I would suggest Oscar Peterson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4Ht4Rm-qo4

Well then if you are thinking a classic Las Vegas lounge
Harry Connick Jr.
Dean Martin
Mel Torme
Domenico Modugno
Tony Bennett
James Brown (alright he is much livelier)

Or some Jazz
Billie Holiday
Duke Ellington (he also has a lot of music with singers as he was a band leader)
Ella Fitzgerald
Louis Armstrong, especially "It's a Wonderful World" this is the best version I know of for this song.
Nina Simone (Sinnerman, Feeling Good, I Put a Spell on You)

There are a great many songs great for background music
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, "Somewhere Under a Rainbow". This is hands down the best rendition I have heard of this song.
Elvis Presley
1950's Rock and Roll

Most of these artists have numerous songs. Since for the most part they followed the formula from classical musicians of covering already created works of music. Though they did also create some originals. So for many of them you will see the same song listed.

The group Ratatat is on of the best lounge/electronic/bar - like song. It's also just music, no vocals.
