It sounds like OS 9 doesn't have the character fonts that it needs to open the PDFs. Are they in Japanese or Chinese or something? Russian? Anything that uses something other than the Roman alphabet will bamfoozle OS 9.

They are in English, but from 1994-95.

Also, they seemed to be compressed within a compressed folder.

I think my mistake might have been not going one level deeper to get them, I don't know for sure.

I'm gonna try again...

Try Acrobat 6? Maybe the files are just corrupted.
You could try them on Windows or OS X and see if thats the case...
