Here's the latest "spy shot" to end up in our inbox, which we believe is fake. This one claims to depict the Mac Mini box, we think. We've posted it since other sites are posting it as possibly real.

Why can't the person/s who's taking the photo's use a good digital camera and take a photo of all sides of the box including the Apple Label with the part number and specs. That would take care of this "Is it Real" or "It's a Fake" question once and for all. These photos look horrible and immediately eliminate any credibility.
We all like sneak peeks, but please don't waste our time. Thanks...

Could easily be faked - if it were on an actual box then it'd be more plausible.
It is just one side, no proof this is even a box. Could just be laminated paper with some photoshop work..

many times Mr. blurry cam is due to people trying to sneak a picture with their phone and when you try to take a photo quickly with a phone, results are terrible.
Does anyone know if apple currently cellophane wraps their mac minis? I know my macbook wasn't, but i think the time machines and apple tvs are (similar box size)

Someone posts a spy shot of the product. People say it's fake because it only shows one side.
Someone posts a 360° video of the product. People say it's fake because they don't show the top and bottom.
Someone posts a 360° video of the product that includes the top and bottom, people say its fake because they didn't show it hooked up and running.
Someone posts a 360° video of the product that includes the top and bottom and demos it running while hooked up to a monitor, people say it's fake because it could easily be another computer running the monitor
All the while, people are saying how easy it is to fake these things.
Then said product is released with the exact specs in the videos and pictures.
And people talk abut how they defended it from the beginning.

Apple wouldn't choose an angle like that to use as an image for the top of the box. It's just absolutely hideous.
They'd probably use an image of the top of the Mac Mini for the top of the box. Maybe a shot of the front side. But definitely not one of the back. It makes as much sense as using an image of your rear end for your profile image on facebook or myspace.
They might show off the back side of the Mac Mini on the back or bottom of the box, along side a few bullet points quickly pointing out the specs in clear and non intimidating or jargon filled language.

I think its a fake because its not Apple's "style" to revamp a product that hasn't been touched in forever and just leave it the way it is physically. Take for example the iMac.... if it went this long with out a refresh, and they suddenly decided to revamp it, you would see a whole new iMac... not the same one with just some new specs.
wx4svr
Mar 2, 2009, 01:21 PM
Maybe... This is old back:
I've got a current Mac Mini Box (about a year and a half old) and it shows the ports on the back. It also shows iLife (in my case, 08') Included, then next to that, a Core 2 Duo logo, then a Apple Remote. But, the current box does show the ports.
Another thing I just though of: The alleged box shows some kind of "wrapping" on it... Apple does NOT put wrap on its products for the most part. There are a few smaller products that they put that wrap on, but not the Mac Mini. Not saying it can't happen, but doesn't seem likely.

Look at the background of the pic.. looks like some kind of packing room (lots of cardboard boxes etc). When I got my Mini delivered it was in a brown-cardboard box suspended using polystyrene blocks.. Perhaps they've started boxing them up already

Why of course, Apple always use the arse of their computers in their publicity shots. Why wouldn't customers be more interested in the number of USB ports than what it will actually look like on their desk.

As much as I hoped Apple would give us a new enclosure for the Mac Mini's from what the rumors and all these spy shots indicate, that will be unlikely.
Now that I think about it, Apple could keep the iMacs looking the same, just change them internally. This is interesting because the current iMac fits in with the Apple line-up quite well...the colours and aluminum match. The Mini fits in with the lineup as it is just fine, it's just severely underpowered.
So maybe we will just see hardware changes, but still the same looking machines? I think its very well possible.

I reckon there is a good chance that this is real for the following reasons.
It does look to me like it is the back of a box wrapped in cellophane (which apple uses on time machines, apple tvs and aiprort etc so why not now?)
It does look like its in a some sort of packing room so if you don't want to get fired the best you could do would be to tale a quick pic with a camera phone - hence bad pic.
It is looking likely that apple haven't changed the actually shell of the mini so wont be releasing it with a bang, it'll just be a tuesday update on the applestore site.
Good chance it could end up being tomorrow

Because then it could be traced back to them?
Although I do agree, a good digital camera isn't exactly hard to buy these days, even mobiles cameras are pretty decent now...

They stopped with the laptops, so why not with the Mini too?
It's just another way to make some more money - start selling certain things as extras but don't change the price for the original item. ie: What used to cost $599 is now $599 + the cost of a remote.
And for the record, I think this is quite possibly the real deal. I doubted it when the images first came out, but with all that has been published about this mini, like the video, it seems very likely. I think this is just a shot of the back of the box.

The Mac Mini targets a different audience than a regular mac. Mac Mini owners would need to have a screen keyboard and mouse separately from the mac, so it makes sense that they are tech savy enough to know what the different ports are. By placing a picture of the ports on the back, they end forever questions like: "well does it have a PS/2 port for my keyboard?" or "is this the one with VGA, DVI or the new Mini Display port?" While it's true a retail employee or Mac Genius can answer these questions, you're printing the box anyway; you might as well make it informative, that cuts down on the number of staff you need to answer the same question over and over...
As to whether it's a fake or not, I have no idea, but some posters here have been saying it's "not an Apple thing to do" to have pictures of the ports. When you've got an iPod with only one port, it's ok not to have port pics, but a computer with ten ports or more really needs some details...
This suddenly reminds me of those pics of the new Apple keyboards that had the word "Command" on the keys, and everyone said "that's not how Apple does it," but I said "it would end all those questions from folks who didn't know where the command key is"

If I had to guess, I'd say there is an easy explanation as to why certain items are shrink wrapped. Time machine, Apple TV, Mighty Mouse, batteries and such that are shrink wrapped sit on the retail shelf. This keeps people from opening them to take a peek.
With Apple putting a large emphasis on package size in the last few years, I wouldn't be surprised if the new mini box was small enough to store on retail shelf in volume.

Funny! :D
There are more reasons to doubt this than what you listed, but still, the critical issue in discussing these rumors is what one's opinion is based on. If it's based on the patterns we've seen with past rumors/fakes/products/etc., then it's a sensible opinion. If it's just based on what the person really, really, really wants, then it's another thing altogether. I've seen a lot of the latter with this Mini rumor.
I still say this "new" Mini is fishy, even now that we have more purported spy shots. None of this follows Apple's past behavior with updates and we've seen fakes in the past that were every bit as convincing. If it's true, I'll happily admit to being wrong, but at least I had reasons for saying it was wrong and not simply going along with an emotional reaction.

One of the two pictures of the "new mini" is fake...maybe. EVERYthing is the same (ports, logo placement, power button, etc.) except for one large thing, Vent numbers. There's 10 in the original image and video, but this latest "box" spyshot only has 9. Literally everything else is the same down to the smallest detail of logo placement, but the vent discrepancy is a major one. Also, the current mini has 10, so if the box is real then the video and first picture may be a prototype using the same amount of vents or the PSer just used the current Mini vents with new ports. Hopefully we'll find out soon.

This must be the 5 millionth thread I've which consists almost entirely of people passing off ill-informed opinon as fact. Why on earth do people say pictures are 'so clearly fake' when, as the evidence shows at the end, they've got absolutely no idea.
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt."
Thats the way the MacRumors forums are these days. Whoever runs it practically encourages people to post crap, as MacRumors post crap themselves.
The existence of this thread is perhaps the best example of that.

Because over the years, there's been plenty of "could be" fakes posted.
You'd be saying the same thing if we all said "that's real" to every fake posted.

100% indisputable no way in heck is that real. That fakester even went so far as to put one of those mockups in my Apple Store yesterday AND was able photoshop "About this Mac" describing the new innards of the mini. I could tell it was a fake in the store just by the smell of this machine. No mac computer smelled like that before. Man, what some people will not do just for the attention!

Yes, you are exactly right. I'm no more interested in reading dozens of people with no idea what they're talking about say "that's real" than them saying "that's fake".

So I've been wondering this for a while.... did the photoshop expert that used all kinds of crazy histograms and color comparisons (and little red lines) get fired or at least taken of the "photoshop expert" list?
sorry to resurrect an old thread

I've been thinking the same thing!
At least some kind of explanation or mea culpa from the so-called photoshop expert would be fun to read.
In fact, why don't one of these 'reporters' from these mac rumor sites follow up with the story and give us a 'de-brief' of the rumor, the expert opinions and where they went wrong.
THAT would be a good read. After all, we spent all this time on the front end (several WEEKS) speculating ... I think it would be worth at least one little article taking a look at all that went on 'in hindsight', including interviews a couple of those 'experts'.

95% of all fakes are range from quite obvious to blatantly obvious, though. It's a very rare occurence that fakes are good enough to pass for the real thing. Therefore it gets pretty lame when everyone pre-emptively cries "fake!" just to cover their asses. There should be a word for crying "fake!" at everything on web forums, it's one of the most popular hobbies on the planet these days. Spy shots of cars in development, leaked movie titles and scripts, scans of books... even crying "fake!" about various body parts on celebrities who actually never had them fixed.
The MacBook Air mockups were accurate, the Mac Mini photos were real, the iPhone 3G pictures were real, the leaked descriptions of the latest iPod Nano were real... they usually are, especially when they're coming from multiple sources.
What is it in human nature that makes it so shameful to fall for a hoax, that makes people go to great lengths to embarrass themselves even more by overanalyzing and dismissing the information, only to find out it was the real deal? Personally I'd rather be suckered by a hoax, than be the self-appointed expert who uses scientific methods and writes essays about why a picture is so obviously fake, only to be proven wrong and be exposed as the worst fake detective ever.
(The only thing that felt weird about the Mac one was the 5 USB ports. Considering how Apple are rather frugal on the USB front -- an iMac has 3 ports -- it felt rather unlikely that they would give you 5 USB ports on their entry-level machine.)
