So they used test that would make the G5 appear faster and just plain omitted the test where they got there but kicks. *tisk tisk*
But I'd still take a Mac over a windows PC anyday.

i think if dell is going to whine about apple not showing the g5 losing to competition, apple should strike back...
dell constantly shows how good their tech support is because they won an award from pc magazine i think (it's in one of their tv ads), but consumer reports clearly shows apple kicking dell's ass.
dell is just a sore loser because they decided to stick with intel... the last major chipmaker to join the 64-bit game.

Computer speeds are not a simple matter. There is no universally useful way to measure and compare speed.
ANY company will promote the ways their product is best, and not promote the cases where their product is not on top. That makes perfect sense.
Don't single Apple out. Their claim was valid and true, and can still be made in truth. It can also be truly claimed that the G5 is NOT the fastest. It's not as simple as people make it out to be when they look for a reason to put Apple down.
Which is a silly effort: OS X is an amazing platform and the G5 is great hardware to run it.

The only reason someone having commanding lead in market share of PC sales having to resort to the BBB for defense. Their customers must be challenging them as to why the G5 is so powerful and they don't have a 64 bit PC (Windows based computer. none workstation). They don't have a competing product for an answer. The Xeon was blown away as a powerhouse when Virginia Tech choose the G5 and built the worlds third fastest computer. Dell more likely could not point to one or two items to in defense to the G5. They had to resort to use a weak but plausible case with the BBB to have a comeback. This is a good sign for the Mac community.

Whether you like them or not, the ads (which don't even run anymore) did what they were supposed to do. They got people talking. Everybody was trying so hard to prove Apple wrong, that the G5 was everywhere. Now Apple is letting it speak for itself.
I think this just makes Dell look bad. Sour grapes and all.
Now if Apple would just come out with some new hardware, they can all be shut up. And so can we. ;) (except for those, "this sucks, I just bought a new Mac" people, and other whiners)

I totally think Apple is being singled out. As I posted on another thread buymusic.com claims to have to largest music store but iTunes music store over 100,000 more songs to choose from ... so what's up with that?
I looked down on dell before because the reason they sell their computers so cheap is because the use generic parts (at my work, 12 out of 12 dell laptops needed the cd-rom to be replaced .... upgraded from generic to toshiba) For all you dell owners, check your device manager, some will say standard cd-rom, or some even say generic. Back to my point, i think of dell as the lowest scum on earth. First their products suck, now their business strategy is dirty.

I think Dell knows that the G5 is getting alot of press. IBM will soon talk big performance from their new chips and they are stuck for the most part with Intel.
They've seen what VT did with off the shelf DP 2.0 G5's... now imagine what happens when those G5's are 3 Ghz or more! Dell also knows very well the G5's power is still untapped. As more optimizations occur, the advantages to the PPC 64 bit line becomes obvious to more people! Then they start losing big ticket sales. What to do? Cry and create some bad press and hope that kills some of Apple's and IBM's steam.
But... There is an old saying that states "Any publicity is good publicity." Apple can turn this to their advantage when new models come out, or when IBM has announced PPC updates.

It will be interesting how Apple promote the 3GHz G5. Sadly for Dell I think their criticisms will probably be rammed down their throat -
"They told us off for not mentioning we got beat on certain floating point calculations, so here is what we did about that." Cue the fastest calculation in desktop history.
"They told us 600MB photoshop files are too big for the average user, so hold onto your hats and watch how this G5 handles 50-150MB fil.... Do you want me to run that 50MB file by you again?" :D

I think Apple knew exactly what they were getting into. Computer speeds are so arbitrary and contentious that they would like to put the G5 into a kind of mythological stratosphere. Thus,
- The mysterious spec release on their own site before the G5 went public
- The very heavy emphasis on the independance of the tests
- The amazing target of 3.0 in 12 months time
- The claim that it's the fastest in the known galaxy
All of that is enough for Apple to feel good about what it's got and they are rubbing the competion's face in it.
If Dell want to complain about adverts that are 9 months old, then let them complain. The damage is already done and , boy are they smarting!

And doesn't the new 970Fx have some qulities that may even make it better than the 970?

 I have a feeling this will come back to bite Dell as well as some of the other PC makers. It tells me that no one will be able to claim they are the fastest unless they pass every single possible test.

I think Dell knows exactly what they are doing. They know Apple is stuck with old products with nothing coming out for a long time -- they want to stick the dagger in while they can. The only competitive product Apple has is the G5 -- overpriced, but competitive speed-wise.
If Dell were worried about Apple introducing exciting new products they would shut up and not call attention to Apple. They know something -- while everyone here is in denial over the long wait for updates -- Dell and the rest of the PC world is laughing up a storm. Makes it sad to be a loyal Apple customer.

If Dell knows something, look at it from this angle. They know that Macs are due for some kind of update in the near future. Dell is worried that Apple will raise the standard another notch or two. This worries Dell because (being known for lack of innovation) they will have to copy or immate whatever Apple does. By drawing first blood, Dell puts Apple in the hot seat with all of the negative attention. Meanwhile, Dell sneakingly introduces a new product or two which resemble something Apple as already done.
Or
Dell is scared about the Apple / HP / iPod deal.
