I thought I read somewhere that Apple makes the drivers for the NVIDIA and ATI cards? Is this true? Or does Apple just have a in say in how they are developed.

I really don't know, but I'd guess that it is a joint effort with nvidia and ati having more say than apple.

its probably a combination of both. actually nvidia would actually at least have to have drivers to test the video card. their driver may not support all the bells and whistle but it has the basics. i don't think nvidia would make a piece of hardware and here it works, now write the software. to write the drivers to takes knowledge of the hardware and the operating system.

The graphic card manufacturers (and many other card-type manufacturers) are provided with the source codes needed. By signing Developer and Manufacturer agreements, the codes are released to the developers and the outsourced support for the system is complete... until version 2 is released.
