View Full Version : Does anyone know what to expect in 10.4 Tiger?

Greetings my fellow Mac colleagues,

I learnt today that Apple has named 10.4 'Tiger', which, I think, is a great name. But I can't help feeling that such a great name might be used on a future revision, such as 10.8...assuming that OS 10 is still around by that far flung future date. But that's another story and thread entirely.

Anyway, will Apple be including the Spoken Interface with 10.4? I know they are working on it right now, but whether it will be included in the next revision, I have no idea. Apple, much of the time, is fairly predictable. But every now and then, they'll chuck a curve ball at us which will alter our paradigm beyond recognition!

So...what do you all think?

I think they will take a page from Linux and have multiple desktops. The infrastructure is already there with Fast User Switching.

Other than that I hope that they BRING BACK THEMES!!!

and hopefully SPEED, os x is slooowwwwwww cf os 9 everyone knows its true :p

It would be nice to be able to turn off some of the graphical elements for running OS X on older macs. My iBook 500 would be much happier if minimized windows just dissappeared from the screen and appeared in the dock, and if Expose skipped its animation. Somehow, I don't think this is a priority for thems at Apple.

The distributed computing rumors are fun though.

I hope they'll continue to work on technology "under the hood". Things like a database-driven file system have been mentioned. I'd love to have a BeOS-like filesystem on my PowerBook. I think Apple needs to innovate beyond cosmetic changes and make sure they stay ahead, even when Longhorn comes out.

Not that I fear that Longhorn will be an OS X killer, but for every new feature in Longhorn that will be celebrated by the press, Apple has to invent fifty to attract the attention of the non-Mac-oriented press.
