Apple today released several software updates related to its AirPort networking products. The updates are presumably related to this morning's release of new AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/03/03/apple-announces-new-imacs-mac-minis-airport-extreme-and-time-capsule/) products bringing several new features (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/03/03/airport-extreme-and-time-capsule-update-details-dual-band-guest-networks-remote-file-access/).

AirPort Client Update 2009-001 (http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPort_Client_Update_2009_001) is targeted at for all Intel-based computers running OS X 10.5.6 and is said to address "issues with roaming and network selection in dual-band environments." The update weighs in at 2 MB.

AirPort Utility 5.4.1 (http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPort_Utility_5_4_1) (17.4 MB) and AirPort Utility 5.4.1 Windows (http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPort_Utility_5_4_1_Windows) (10.92 MB) provide updated setup and management tools for the AirPort Express Base Station, AirPort Extreme Base Station and Time Capsule. No specific details on changes present in the updates are given, although they presumably incorporate new features allowing users to administer the updated AirPort Extreme Base Station and Time Capsule models introduced today.

I hope this fixes the bug where an ipod touch can kick the computer off the network without having to reassign another IP. This happens to both me and my housemate, each with different generations of ipod touch and different laptops.

I wonder if the MobileMe option would be available for current TimeCapsule users.

Knowing Apple this won't be the case....

I would like to see the current Aiport Express to be able to handle multiple configurations, just like the old AP was able to do. That's a feature that's been lost between the upgrade from 802.11b/g to 802.11n

/agree

anyone with a current time capsule or AEBS that can verify that the update doesn't give us this option?

mixed mode/guest network are nice to haves and require different hardware i presume, but the mobileme option sounds like it could be put on legacy devices.....

steve...
please....

I have a network with both a Time Capsule and an AE - can anyone who has installed this comment on whether or not there are any improvements for current users?

I just went through the settings in AirPort Utility (for my TC) and I didn't notice anything.

It would be fantastic if they did, but I wouldn't put any money on them giving us features.

Basically this is just an update to our current Macs to support the new AEBS, and TC.

The previous gen AEBS is discounted $20 ($159.00 now) and the new AEBS is $179.00.

My guess is that there will be no new functionality with the previous gen AEBS, and TC.

The MobileMe internet sharing option is going to be added to the old models.

I agree, it looks like this just add support for the new Extreme and Time Capsule and nothing more.

Although I am going to wait to see if it breaks anything (like connections) before installing.

I wish I could get the dual-band wireless as I would love my MBP to have full 802.11 N performance. In order for my PS3, Wii, PSP, and NDS to connect, I have to leave it at 2.4GHz. :(

Software update is giving me the following error with the Airport Utility update:

The update “AirPort Utility Software Update 2009-001” can’t be installed.
The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed by “Apple”.

Hmm...

You mean the guest network feature? Then no it is not.

If your talking about the MobileMe then yes it has been. Check the link posted on this page above.

I only upgraded to 10.5.6 last week, and have been unable to connect to the router from my bedroom. My iPhone connects, my Powerbook G4 connects, even my 9 year old computer connects, its just the macbook that has tonnes of problems.

Here's hoping this fixes it.

Since updating my airport utility it can't see my Airport Extreme n (5GHz) router (even though I am connected to it!) and only sees my two Airport Expresses (2.4GHz).

Does anyone know if the Firmware for the AEBS was updated in addition to the utility and client on the Mac end of things?

I did not see a firmware update. My TC is still at 7.3.2.

The article posted above says that 7.4.1 is available. I just hope that it fixes the issue where the AE will sometimes become invisible to the Admin Utility until you reset it.

The tuaw article? All it says that mobile me access will be available if you install 7.4.1. But it doesn't say 7.4.1 is available for download yet.

You're right, I skimread it and didn't notice that it was still internal.

Statistics graph in the new Airport Utility is invalid at 802.11n mode. In my case it shows 41 megabit instead of actual 270.

The MobileMe internet sharing option is going to be added to the old models.

See here (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/03/03/apple-updates-time-capsule-and-airport-extreme-with-internet-sha/)

Does the MobileMe internet sharing only apply to USB drives connected to the TC or AEBS or does it also include computer hard drives on a network (wireless or ethernet) from the TC or AEBS?

Thanks.

Are you finally able to change the MAC address now? That was a dealbreaker when I was router shopping.

These have full SNMP support, right?

The 7.4.1 update just appeared in my Airport Extreme utility. I have the new base station, and this update has made a huge difference. It actually feels like broadband now, whereas before it was like slow DSL.

The 7.4.1 firmware update left my TC in an extremely unstable state. All machines (wired and wireless - 20+ times a day) would loose internet connectivity randomly that could only be corrected by removing the power to the TC. Reverted back to the old version after a very painful week.

apparently there could be a problem with this update.
