It really sucks, but forces many users to download it for radio transmissions. The RealOne player for Windows is even worse, trying to hog every single media file, and not doing a very good job of anything. It's a jack of all trades, and a master of none

I like Real's formats. They're relatively good quality for their filesize, and it's easy to download RTSP streams. But I don't like the player. Sure, the Mac player is a lot better than the Windows player, but it still has its problems. Anyone written a codec for QuickTime yet?

that's what i wish there was. a qt plug-in. i mean, realone player is ok, but sometimes it's very annoying. you can only have one window opened at a time which bothers me a lot.

On Windows I use Real Alternative. Works ok for most stuff. Played through a hacked program call Media Player Classic. It's like WMP 6.4, but better. I wish there was something like that on my Mac.

Meh. I wish there was a real codec for QT. Be cheaper for them to develop, and easier with less support. But then, I guess, you wouldn't have to use their craptastic player.

If there is a lesson from all this, it is that if you don't control the software platform (as Microsoft does) or the hardware platform (as Apple does) then you're never going to dominate either.

 Interesting point.

I want Quicktime to open:
Real Media
Windows Media
Divx
Xvid
OGG

All without plugins, just built in, none of those are built in right now.

Version 7 rocked. 8 wasn't too bad.

Then it got incredibly bloated, started running slowly even on brand new modern hardware, started crashing all over the place, and installed itself as the default player for everything.

And on Windows, it also installs spyware.

And, of course, they deliberately broke their codecs so that you can't play anything from a recently-modern server without the latest version.

So I don't play any Real content anymore. If it can't be played through WMP or QuickTime, or VLC, I just don't play it.

And you know what? It hasn't really been a problem for me. Just about every streaming site around includes support for QuickTime or WMP.

What's wrong with plugins?

Personally, I'd prefer it if all of QT's codecs were plugins. Why replace the entire player just because some codec needs a bug fix?

For me, the only codec I'm really missing is one for MOD files (and all the related formats, like STM, IT, etc.) Right now, I have to use third-party players for these.

Not true... There are OGG plug-ins on the net. Check the ogg sites. I have one. Meanwhile, use Video Lan Client or MenPlayer to do 4 of 5 of those..
