If I showed up at an Apple Store in New York with a student ID for a Canadian university, would I be able get the student discount? I'm going to be living there for the summer, and want to get a new laptop during that period.

yes that should be fine, sometimes they don't even ask for your ID.

Yes, it'll work w/o a doubt. What are you gonna get? iBook or PowerBook?

Undecided. I currently have a 12" 500 mHz iBook, and I'm looking at the 14" iBook, and the 12" and 15" PowerBook. I haven't even near decided yet!

apple has a limit on student discounts, all apple stores check for id and enter it into their system. each student is allowed only one new computer (laptop or desktop) in an academic period..which i believe is from july first to june 30th...or august first to july 31st..so as long as you aren't going to be exceeding your limit (of one), you should be okay

When I used my student discount (both times), I have to show them my student ID AND a driver's license (or any state issued ID).

I went to a Staples and an Office Depot and asked the manager if I wanted to buy Microsoft Office 2004 for the Mac Student edition would he sell it to me. He said I would ask you if you were a student or do you have a student at home, he also said he would have to take my word for it and not ask for proof. So that's my plan.

Teachers/faculty of any level and college students are eligible for the discount. The store checks to make sure the school is supported (nearly every one is), then photocopies your ID and driver's license. Software is not sold at the education prices in the retail stores, only online or at college bookstores.
AND, ms office for mac student/teacher edition can be sold to anyone. The restrictions are not the same.
