The writer of that article is a turd ball. After being a fraction of the cost of the other top 10 supercomputers and coming in 3rd, why would people still go to IBM , Dell and HP. It's no longer an experiement. VT is making a kit and will sell it to interested customers which include nasa, other federal agencies and pharma.

That writer probably owns dell stock or something ...

Will somebody please shut down CNet's webservers? I mean really: This reminds me of that fake story on the M$ website with that (not actually existing) woman who says that her Windows solution for integrated multimedia is sooo much better than anything else. Of course that was an obvious fake and it had to go.
But tarning this Anti Apple Statement as an "opinion" and then not having the backbone to even say who it wrote is so damn sleazy...

But then again, it makes me happy... 'Cause someone is VERY affraid of what is happening with the G5 and the new server platform we see from Apple these days.

That whole Big Mac used to be one of my soapbox speeches and that article made all of my same points. The 4th supercomputer was I don't even remember how much more expensive. VT most certainly didn't have 50 million in "free labor"

The fact is, the Apple cluster is #3... at a bargin price. Its good the students could get involved, it would be a good experience for them... why pay $$$ for payed hired help, when you can get students to learn on the job!

This article is just retarded.

You can see CNET's bitterness ouzzing through the article!

And of course, if VT had chosen Dell like you are "supposed to" then there would have been no volunteer labor.

How on earth do the volunteers get laid at Apple's doorstep?

Since the thread is from Cnet who are always full of BS and the fact that I posted the thread, I decided to lable it as "Opinion" rather than news since it only qualifies as an Opinion.

...for articles like this from Cnet. I can't help it - I keep going to their site to read the latest bizzare, illogical slam against Apple. It's like... heroine!

I'm convinced that they write this garbage just to get hits to their site. I would go so far as to say that without bashing Apple, Cnet would fall into obscurity. Actually, it's quite pathetic to have to resort to this sort of baiting just to show your advertisers that people visit your web site.

So next time I see a link to an article on Cnet, I'm going to ignore it. Who's with me?

The C|Net story was from January 30, 2004 and it seems like we've discussed this already...

But whatever, it's always fun to bash on C|Net ;)

There was apparently a glitch in the CNet database that caused it to look like a March 30th article, which is why The Mac Observer is just covering it (they missed it back in January). Or so says Bryan Chaffin in the comments of the article.

I find it sad such articles are even posted on the web.

Where is the credibility?

CNet -- Suck it. Really. You are a horrible place for the truth.

The worst part about all this is that people take CNET seriously. Whoever wrote this is taking a personal grudge against Apple and abusing that power. Its so sad that journalistic integrity has fallen so far.

The thing is, the people interested in clusters in education, have an educated mind, and if they are in the market for a cluster and read this article they are going to be drawn to a conclusion slightly different from the CNEY anonyme .

ie Even a complete terabyte-hungry IT boffin with no sense of budgets and business plans is going to sit down and work out how simple it is to put an Apple cluster together. Even a financial person with no idea of clusters is going to do the simple maths of an Apple $ rate per terabyte. And the project manager is going to see a list of the serious players and ask why VT went for 9 terabytes from mickey mouse Apple rather than 9 terabytes from Dell. Maybe they will even google to see what Dell can do and see that their greatest achievement so far has been the Buffalo cluster operates at roughly 5.7 trillion floating-point operations per second (FLOPS) , according to Rooholamini, and it includes more than 16TB of storage.

Knowledge is power and education establishments have plenty of knowledge. CNET are kings of FUD on this particular issue.
