Near term pricing on 2008 octos ?

New 2009 pros only out for a day or so, so I don't think I can put any stock in current ebay/craigslist prices ...

So, after the dust settles a few weeks from now, what are we thinking for octo iterations of the 2008 pro ?

2x 2.8ghz
2x 3.0ghz
2x 3.2ghz

Assuming standard/minimal memory/gfx/disk specs ?

Personally, I'd like very much to pick up a 2008 octo and beef it up with aftermarket (inexpensive) ram and 2 or more of the 4870s... but I'd like to not be in the $4xxx range to do it ...

I don't think the current price of used systems will drop that much because
A) they never do with macs
B) there are so many people who wish they wouldn't have sold their old system in lieu of the new one
C) People are goingt to be scrambling to pick up a cheap (relatively speaking, of course) 2008 mac pro while they still can
D) they never do with macs

If the speed that the 08 models have been selling since the 09 release I cant see there will be many left in May ;) I have been watching a UK reseller stock today as I purchased a quad at lunch time and within the last five hours 11 have been sold out of the available 25.

I think people have waited for a massive update and like me are a little disappointed at specs and price so are now snapping up the 08 machines.

Perhaps this update was a genius marketing stroke from Apple to clear the channel of all the 2008 models. Then the prices will drop $500 a unit on the 2009's...not a bad strategy from Apple's perspective.

Reviving this thread in the hope of some conjecture ...

I have a real need for a mac pro immediately, but my CPU needs are not that great ... so the 2008 octo 2.8ghz seems like a good fit.

But I see these on ebay for $3600 - $3800 and that seems _very_ expensive.

Shouldn't these settle in at $2500 or so ?

Speaking of an octo 2.8ghz w/8 GB ram. So nothing crazy.

You should look at the ones with bids on them. I always enjoy seeing those listings with POWERMAC G4 BRAND NEW ONLY $1799!! That doesn't mean those are getting bought.

personally I don't think that the older model with depreciate much seeing that you can buy the 1st gen mac pro 2.66ghz for not much less than the 2.8 when they were still the newest model.
