Is it just a coincidence that this story is about Apple and Palm when, in 1997, Apple was slated to be PURCHASED by Palm?

Or are there some underpinnings about that event that I missed in reading the article?

I dont think it has anything to do with 1997, it's just that one analyst gave the opposite rating on two companies than most others would have. Palm, with it's losses, should have been downgraded and Apple should have either been upgraded or kept the same - the analyst did the opposite, upgraded Palm and downgraded Apple. Apparently, he thinks Palm has no where to go but up and Apple is about to feel more of the recession.

I think you have that backwards, it was Apple that nearly purchased Palm.

Please don't perpetuate that myth. Apple still had a billion in the bank in 1997. They were no where close to considering bankruptcy.

They were losing market share and mind share and were in trouble - both financial and marketability. But they got Jobs back and that disappeared in 4 years time.

Concerning this article - I think it kinda sorta hints between the lines that the guy who recently iterated a buy on PALM and a sell on AAPL is a manipulator of AAPL stock - he kinda says it a contradictory way by giving ABramsky a few compliments.

Apple's potential buyer in the 1996-97 timeframe was Sun. In fact Sun made an offer to the Apple Board of Directors, which they turned down. Today Apple could buy Sun for loose change, if they had any reason to do it, so that's the name of that tune.

Palm ripped of the Newton to make the Pilot.
Palm ripped of the iPhone to make the Pré.

Sure both the Pilot and Pré added some neat ideas of their own, but it is clear where the inspiration came from. No wonder Tim Cook did a bit of sabre rattling.
